A celebration for welfare and achievements

Annually on 8 March, thousands

of events are held throughout the

world to inspire women and celebrate

achievements. A global web of rich

and diverse local activity connects

women from all around the world

ranging from political rallies, business

conferences, and government activities

and networking events through to

local women’s craft markets, theatric

performances, fashion parades

and more. The new millennium is

witnessing a significant change and

attitudinal shift in both women’s and

society’s thoughts about women’s

equality and emancipation. With more

women in the boardroom, greater

equality in legislative rights, and an

increased critical mass of women’s

visibility as impressive role models in

every aspect of life, one can think that

women are gaining true equality. We

do have female astronauts and prime

ministers, school girls are welcomed

into university, women can work

and have a family, women have real

choices. But on the other side there are women

near to us who don’t even know their

basic rights to live. How much of these

women are really benefitted?? There are

still many questions that hover in each

girl’s mind. What support is society

giving to a woman who is left alone

after her husband has died or a girl

whose parents are no more with her?

Such women and girls need someone

to move a hand towards them. Srijan

Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd.

Sabour, Bhagalpur is one such hand

towards them. With its various self help

activities it is helping deprived women

to stabilize themselves all around the

state. Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd. Sabour, Bhagalpur

As per the brief note about the society and its achievements, we found the facts which is mentioned below. On the south shores of NH 80 is the Srijan

Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd

that incepted in the year 1996. The

idea of Smt. Manorama Devi was to

provide self dependency to women.

The thoughts of a widow living in

the sorrow of the departed soul of her

scientist husband helped to change

the life of thousands women socially,

financially and even politically. The

voyage began with some two to four

women in the beginning. And now the

number has increased to more than

five thousand. What a remarkable

difference! Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd.

is a registered co-operative organization

working for the cause of downtrodden

and suppressed people. It works without

any discrimination of caste, religion,

creed and gender etc.Its mission statement is “To organize

the rural and poor people specifically

BPL rural women and develop their

capacities as per the need of the area

for their sustainable livelihood sources

through self employment and protect

their human rights.” The funds are raised through

“JAMA VRIDHI YOJNA” under the

guidance of co-operative department,

Government of Bihar to give pace of

development. We produce various

items through SHG women and through

personal experts of our organization

and generate fund on their trading with

support of our members. We think that

people should be empowered so that

they could chalk out plan, organize

plan and after implementation they

could assess and evaluate program.

This technique shows good results in

many villages. Illiteracy, poverty and

unemployment are our major problems.

We are considering seriously upon

these crucial issues. We think that

through proper agriculture practices,

marketing and village resource

management opportunities, jobs could

be created to get minimum need and

survival opportunities. This will check

tension, migration, gender disparity and

inequality in our society. In all our action and field operations we

build capacity of the identified persons

and follow various orientations round-

up for active and regular involvement of

the community for getting viable results

and change. Our officials, members

and grass root level volunteers are

working very hard to give a new shape

of the project area on all fronts-socio

economic and other social parameters.

Our grass root workers and animators

are reaching on the door steps of under

privileged and unnerved people for

working with the mission of SRIJAN.

More than five thousand women of

SHG and others are supporting our

views, vision and mission. We take a

pledge to serve the common mass.

InceptionSrijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti

Ltd. came into existence in the year

1996 by the local community

of Bhagalpur District. From

the very inception of the organization we are

working to mobilize the community for literacy, agriculture, health and social peace. We are advocating on the schemes and policies. In the first phase we organize the local community and public debates were done for the development of village by the proper co- ordination of government officials, bankers and other like minded social institutions. Through the movement of human rights and agriculture issues activists came on the one platform. Any type of development can be ushered only

by people’s spontaneous

participation irrespective of caste,

creed, religion and gender. The people of this state are saddled with the problems of

mass scale illiteracy, ignorance, superstition,

poverty, economic and

cultural backwardness, rapid

migration, oppression to women

and abuse of children and so

many others. Our organization is working on

various development and research

works in Bhagalpur district start

from Sabour block and now all over

blocks of the district. Our workshops

operate at various Panchayats, with the

help of SHG women and selling and

distributing units at Shivnarayanpur,

Sabour block campus, Sabour main

market and Bhagalpur main market.

ManagementOur management body is a core

group of philanthropic stalwarts on

complete democratic pattern are

actively involved in various issues

like office management, field program

operations, meetings as well as the

Durga Puja is not just about worshipping the Goddess, but also aboutattires, gatherings and coming together. Pandal hopping, meetingfriends and relatives go hand in hand.Well, Durga Puja is a matter of grand celerbrations which everyone, especially Bengalis look forward to. However, the festive mood has changed over years, its more fashion oriented, be it clothes,make-up, lifestyle or pandal decoration. The four day long traditional carnival includes worshipping the deity in the morning and visiting pandals in the evening. Here are somemake-up tips for young ladies which will go best for this year’s celebration, depending upon the comfort level of the individuals. Some are comfortable with heavy make-ups while some feel good with light touch-ups, which go best in the morning. One can apply light eye shadow with thin liner and kajal and subtle lip colour, and to keep up the traditionality one can also wear the ethnic Bengali sari, with a big bindi. While, what suits in the late evening is dark eye shadow, kajal, shiny cheeks, glossy lips

and bright smoky eyes. Colour trends have infactchanged with the coming years. Instead of applying matching eye shadow, one can put matching eye liner ( as colourful eye liners are again in vogue), with dark kajal and mascara; more interestingly the contrasting eye shadow will look more stunning and ravishing. Elderlyfemale can wear gajra on the hair which goes best with entrancing ethnic saris, hanging earrings and choker necklaces.Women always want to stay decked up during these four days ofcelebration. Choosing the right kind of make-up, according to the skintype is the most tricky thing. Here are a few points that one shouldkeep in mind.Foundations which come in various mediums- liquid, pancake, mousse, cream to powder ones, should be chosen in accordance with the skinshade. Lakme Silk Naturalle and Maybelline Mousse Foundations are the best this year, befitting and gliding with all types of skin shades. A concealer is quintessential to veil discolouration or spots or to enwrap dark circles.

Maybelline, Oriflame Studio Concealer workwonders in blotting out spots. A tinch of rosiness in the cheeks issomething indispensable, making woman look pulchritude for which MAC Gleeful and Maybelline Mousse Blush is the best. With Lakme Absolute Highlighter, one can create contours and make the face appear more shapely. Revlon Renewlist Lipcolor and MAC Mattene Lipstick is much in vogue this year, making the lips appear creamy and glistening.

The favourite coiffures among ladies

when surveyed for

this Puja, was found to be

French twist, tumbled

tail, textured sidebraid, double hair knot, puffs and all time favourite ponytail.“ I have already started preparations for

this puja a month back. I have made a list of the dates to go to parlour. I am also ready to get different looks on all four

days. All this is really exciting me”, said Vijaya Jha, a first year student of NIT. Thus, the shinny spirit within should be

integrated with the equally bright make-up outside, to keep up the fever and happy tone of the puja alive.-Gargi Chatterjee

News Paper

A photograph in the social networking site, Facebook, depicting a rhino calf with it legs covering its mother’s head as she slept and the comment below, “please don’t kill my mother,” most eloquently summed up the plight of rhinos in the wilds of Assam. This year alone, the state witnessed the killing of 36 rhinos, with Kaziranga, considered to be the home of one-horned rhinos, bearing the brunt – 28 rhinos were poached at the world heritage site. The figure, however, is much less than last year, during which man and nature seemed to have entered into a macabre conspiracy against the state animal of Assam. Last year witnessed the death of over 112 rhinos, out of which 25 were killed by poachers while the rest died during the two waves of floods, which hit the Kaziranga during mid-summer. Not that rhinos had never been poached. They have been and by all indications they will continue to be hunted. What stood out, however, was the stark brutality of the manner in

which horns of a few rhinos were gouged out even when they were alive and then went on to live for a few more days before succumbing. Horns of at least four rhinos were sawn off in this manner, with one surviving more than a week before the inevitable struck and it became another statistic. Experts on wildlife crime say that poachers are always in a hurry and they try to take away the horn as soon as the rhino is hit by a bullet. “Poachers have no time to waste due to beefed up security and try to flee as soon as possible,” an expert in the field said. They are of the view that a spurt in the demand for the rhino horn in the international market has triggered a corresponding increase in the hunting of the animal not only in Assam but in their habitats across the world. South Africa, for instance, had witnessed a massacre of rhinos last year, with the figure crossing the 500 mark. The spate in rhino killings in Assam not only raised a hue and cry in the state with several organizations staging protest rallies but

also rang the

alarm bell in New Delhi. Central forest and environment minister, Jayanthi Natarajan, rushed to Kaziranga and announced that an unmanned aircraft would be deputed at the national park very soon to keep vigil. It is yet to arrive, though. Forest and security forces had done their bit by making several arrests, which included a few poachers who were involved in the recent killings. Several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle was recovered from the arrested persons. The use of the AK series rifle, a favourite weapon of the militants, by poachers was another revelation. The recovery of tranquilisers added yet another ominous dimension although it was yet to be established whether poachers used it in any of the incidents. Forest officials in the state are, however, of the view that a few incidents of rhino killings would not have much of an impact on the successful conservation efforts.

They have a reason for such conviction: the state has recorded

an increase in the population of the world-famous one-horned

rhinos over the past three years. The figures of the just-concluded 2012 census have revealed the presence of 2,505 rhinos as against 2,201 found during the 2009 count — an increase of 304. Kaziranga alone has 2,290 rhinos. Forest officials feel that with help from villagers residing near the rhino habitats and various agencies involved with wildlife protection, Assam will continue to remain as a successful conservation story for the rhinos.

• What should one do if harassed for Puja subscription (Chanda) ?

File a complaint at the nearest Police Station or with the Joint Commissioner of

Police (Crime). Such extortionists are liable to be arrested. If a Puja Committee is

involved, the permission to hold the Puja is liable to be cancelled.

• While commuting, how can we know which roads are blocked by Pandals?

Which are the no-entry Zones?

We will release a comprehensive Puja Guide Map before Puja. The Guide will be

available free of cost at Traffic Guards, Kiosks and Police Stations and will contain

all details of Puja Pandals. Please check with our Traffic Control Room for further

details.

• What kind of security measures are being taken against terror?

We will deploy plain clothes men to keep an eye on areas where a large number of

people gather. CCTV s will be installed at and near pandals and the crowd will be

monitored. We are constructing watchtowers at important crossings and behind big

Pandals. This booklet contains details of security steps citizens should take. Anti-Sabotage checks will be done

on a daily basis at all important puja Pandals.

• How will you protect people against pickpockets in overcrowded zones?

During the festive season, many outside criminals i.e. lifters and pickpockets may attempt to enter Kolkata to

commit crime. The photographs of all recorded pickpockets are circulated and shown to police men on duty.

Plainclothes teams of Detective Department maintain close watch in vulnerable areas and arrest such criminals.

• What steps will you take rein in rowdy revellers and drunken driving.

Teams will be posted at the big Pujas and at crossings to check vehicles. We will use breath-analysers at key

crossing to curb drunken driving. Plainclothes teams will be deployed to keep vigil.

• Since many stretches will be cordoned off for pedestrians, are any steps being taken to help Pandal-Hoppers

avoid parking problems?

We cordon off various areas to prevent unauthorized parking near Pandals. In our Guide Map, we have marked

parking lots near all big Pujas. One of the most important duties of Traffic Police and the Local Police is to

ensure that the area around Pandal and its approach roads are free of parked vehicles.

• What numbers can we dial in case of an emergency?

Call 2214-3024/3230 or 100 or 1090 for reporting an emergency of to give the Police any information of an unat-

tended bag near a Pandal, unattended vehicle or information about suspicious persons.

• Will there be Police Kioks at major Pandals

All big Pujas will have a separate Police Control Room where one can complain. For instance, Pandals at

Mohammad Ali Park, Park Circus, College Square, SantoshMitra Square, Kaiser Street among others, will have

designated Control Rooms manned by officers.

• When can loudspeakers be used? What should be the decibel level?

Loudspeakers are not permitted between 10 pm and 6 am except for emergency announcements. The limit is

65 decibels.

• Any new steps being taken this year to ensure a safe and people-friendly Puja?

Kolkata Police will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the citizens have a safe, secure and happy Puja. All

Police personnel will assist the people, ease traffic and pedestrian movement, prevent crimes like eve-teasing,

snatching, pickpocketing etc., and help trace missing children, if any. Ambulances will be on the road near busy

Puja Pandals to assist people in need. The Disaster Management Group will be kept stand-by at strategic places

to combat any calamity. Kolkata Police is with you and for you, always and everytime.
