skills

I am a 25-year-old student highly motivated, curious and open-minded. Familiar with teamwork, I like the active and fruitful exchange among different ideas and characters. I am helpful and positive even in difficult circumstances. My flair for observation generally leads me to be accurate and detail-oriented. At work, I like to express my double attitude to be a creative dreamer and a pragmatic problem-solver when needed.

The project deals with a part of the city with a strong commercial and storage tradition, due to the proximity of the Garonne river and of the railway station. A lar-ge number of ancient warehouses has historical value, so their pre-servation is required. The quarter is now involved in a much wider redevolopment project that plans the realization of a new High-Spe-ed railway station and new at-tractions such as Mecà (Cultural

and Economic Centre of Aquita-nie). The project proposal takes shape starting from these new issues and tries to provide an an-swer in space to many different future ways of spending time in this part of the city. Therefore it’s proposed a harmonic coexistence between the different rhythms of living the quarter: buildings and paths dedicated to people who pass through the quarter inter-sect each other and connect with

buildings and paths dedicated to the ones that live in the quarter or stay there. In this way, various walking and cycle trails, small squares and outdoor public spa-ces are well connected from the main driveways and can be easily reached. The central existing wa-rehouses, transformed into open commercial spaces, act as the he-art of the quarter and the main connection among the several outdoor public spaces.

Dealing with a collège (school for 11-14-year-old children), the project focused not only on the education matters, but also on all the aspects that revolve around it: relations, communication, playing, knowledge and creation. That is why both the whole com-plex of the school and the single education rooms were thought to be volumes opened to the “exte-rior”, whether it is the quarter or

the common spaces. The school building is in direct contact with the context, without any strong barriers. It defines two open courtyards and relates with the historical buildings of the quarter. Three of them (ancient warehou-ses) are also included in the com-plex, hosting a library, playing and multipurpose rooms and an auditorium that can be used also indipendently from the school.

Each classroom extends outside with an external space that can be reinvented and customized by the students. It allows also open-air lessons during the warm sea-sons. Many common spaces for playing, relaxing, socializing re-sult from the different disposition of the classrooms. Vertical voids and horizontal visual connections relate all these areas, offering always different perspectives.

Bertalia is one of the areas of Bologna that, during ‘70s, have been transformed from small ru-ral settlements into residential quarters connected to the city centre. In this specific case, the area is defined by long buildings without any relation with stre-ets, mainly degraded and having a low architectural quality. In the centre of the area is a park ba-rely equipped. The main request for the project was densifying the

district to take advantage of this already urbanized environment and to avoid the continuous and harmful urban sprawl. The project proposes to insert a variety of elements into the stiff, monotonous and regular weft de-termined by the existing buildin-gs. Three main axies connect the area to the historical neighborho-od, to the Modern area and to a district yet to be realized. These axies become generators of new

urban spaces with architectures for homes, offices, commerce and public services. The built-up areas are gathered in disused parts, leaving space to the exi-sting park, which is equipped and enhanced. The existing buildings are redeveloped as well: new vo-lumes placed adjacent to them recreate a liveable street-front and wood platforms hide car par-kings and connect the homes to each other.

4_ LITTLE BERTALIA. The residential area consists of small volumes of 2/3 floors composed of different housing units. The urban structure is extremely varied and gives each hou-se the opportunity to have a clear view and a private green space. It also continuously suggests different perspectives to people who pass through or spend time in the pedestrian paths of this area

Placed between the south-west main axes and the park of the re-developed area, the residential and commercial complex is made up of six modules that differ ac-cording to the number and typo-logy of their future dwellers. In each home the living area has direct visual contact with both the street and the park and is a unique flexible space. In the southern area, loggias overhang the front, offering a liveable spa-

ce and providing the right shading from sunlight. For the same rea-son a shading sun screens solution is designed for the front.Otherwise, the northern eleva-tion is linear and flat, avoiding heat loss. The surface finishing, made with GRC panels, reflects the modula-rity lay-out of indoor spaces, re-alizing a pressing rhythm on the facade, in which variations of co-lours, dimensions, materials and

shadows take place. The access to private residences is on the park-side, where stair-cases and public corridors are lo-cated as well. The spaces on the groundfloor that overlook the pe-destrian street are entirely public and used as shops.

The demolition of a historical ho-tel in the centre area of Casalec-chio left an empty space between the main street that passes throu-gh the town and a lively and suc-cessful square. The new building redefines sur-rounding urban areas (the pede-strian shopping boulevard, the main street) and creates a public courtyard open towards the squa-

re and easily accessible from the outside. Infact, the groundfloor is permeable, thanks to open passa-geways that break up the volumes used as shops and restaurant; the upper residential floors are conti-nuous instead. The building has a steel structu-re. On the groundfloor polycar-bonate panels and glasses al-ternate, while on upper floors

walls are composed of brickwork blocks, covered with a ventilated curtainwall made of gres panels of different colours. Construction details, energy-saving and con-sumption-reducing technological solutions were carefully designed in this project. Same care had the studies for comfort, lighting, ven-tilation and shading solutions.

HouseBologna, ITyear: 2010 | teachers: L. Gelsomino, R. Morelliwith: C. Mirri, C. Ricciardi, C. Zilio

The plot where this house for four people is designed is long and narrow and faces the street on the south side, while facing a park on the north side. The basic idea behind the design was realizing a visual and physi-cal connection line between the street and the park; from this

space you can enter the living area, a single space conceived on different levels that defines the kitchen area, dining area and re-laxing area. The first floor, split in the centre by two skylights, hosts spaces for resting and sleeping and a large multifunctional room. Divided by a sliding and rotating

glass wall, this space can take different configurations accor-ding to the needs of who uses it.On the south side, the house is mainly glazed, in order to gather as much light as possible. In addi-tion, floor slabs overhang, giving shelter from the sun during the warm seasons.

Freehand drawing is an instru-ment I like using in different spheres: the architectural sur-vey (to accurately understand and remember an existing

work); the concept phase of a project (to transform immedia-tely ideas and suggestions into something real); communication (using drawing as a language to

communicate my ideas to people who work with me or who have to understand my projects).

Photography is a passion I’m cultivating and trying to im-prove because it is surely one of the most expressive and effective means to represent and interpret a space or the relationship between man and architecture.

edarchibo.com is a blog / webmagazine created by a group of students to which I belong. It is an open platform that collects interviews, arti-cles, a gallery of projects and photos; all concerning archi-tecture, design, engeneering and arts in general. We also tried to bring web issues and debates to concrete public discussions and workshops among teachers, professio-nals and students.

I dealt with outdoor design attending a class of green landscape, parks and gardens design. I was involved in a project of regeneration and transforma-tion of a very degraded 1000-m2 garden in the centre of Bologna. Involving local organisations of citizens and quarter inha-bitants, the project’s aim was to create small sub-are-as characterized by different species selections, plants and uses. Everything was designed using recycled or low-cost materials and sim-ple construction details that could be realized by the inha-bitants themselves.

values

thank you

teamworkI am always excited to work in a team. Group dynamics are often stimulating, so I try to learn as much as possible from the other components and try to do my best for them. Nowa-days teamwork is inevitable in our field. I think nothing is more fruitful than comparing my ideas with other voices, ways of thinking and working.

synthesis Having grown up with a both humanistic and scientific edu-cation, I always try to synthe-tize those aspects. In dealing with architecture, I am con-vinced that art, sociology, literature, math, sciences and technical knowledge are all equally fertile fields to draw on and to explore to realize good projects.

observation It is the starting point for every scientific process, inclu-ding design.Observing phenomena, peo-ple, nature, architecture with a curious and critical attitude makes you understand issues and suggests how to solve them, both on a large-scale and on a detailed one.

positive thinking An optimistic approach to pro-blems and critical situations helps me to find good solu-tions and to avoid negative influence on the others. Even in difficult moments or with imminent deadlines, I always try to keep a positive and se-rene attitude and to optimize working time.Anxiety is just self-defeating.

adaptabilityWith this word I mean a flexi-ble disposition and mental agility, that allows me to be comfortable in different envi-roments and consequently to give my best effort. It is obviou-sly an attitude in continuous training. A similar concept is applied in my work: the project should adapt not only to the context but also to the ever-changing needs of people.

sustainability I firmly believe in this con-cept, although it is often abu-sed. Acting in a way that lets future generations live with our same possibilities and re-sources or better ones is now strongly needed. In daily life and while designing I’m very conscientious about saving energy, using renewable and local resources and recycling.
