One begins their journey the same way that one begins every journey in Death Valley, with the car. Parking terraces are located on the south side of the complex. The visitor leaves the car and follows one of the paths which are seemingly the result of water erosion through the land. Three paths in total lead to the visitor center, shop, lounge and restaurant, which comprise the public facility. The roof covering the paths which cut through the public arena is likewise eroded, allowing natural light to guide the way through the public realm and connect to the private. adjacent to these paths is support program for the public domain, such as a restaurant kitchen, bathrooms, an auditorium, and mechanical rooms.
The visitor’s journey down the alluvial fan concludes with a break in the mass where the public pool resides, culminating into a framed view of the sand dunes. This is the only por-tion of the design oriented to view the dunes, offering yet another way to experience the many different natural features that Death Valley has to offer.

The Room is an escape from the harsh elements of the barren landscape. Like the rest of the project, the rooms seem to be carved out of the earth. The bathroom is cave-like and the shower is naturally lit during the day by a narrow light wash down one of its walls. The main portion of the room contains the bed, a built in desk, and a courtyard. Here, one can rest quietly by a fire after a long day of exploring the National Park and enjoy a framed view of the Panamints and the stunningly clear, starry sky.

The new addition to the architecture school at IIT acts not so much as an attach-ment to Crown Hall itself, but as another piece in the fabric of IIT’s campus.
While Mies constructed an open, horizontal space in which students would be encouraged to share design dialogues, the addition establishes the same dialogue between studios in a vertical space. Most of the support program in Crown Hall is shoved into the basement which acts as a core. Similarly, the southern block of the addition will act as a core. This will allow for a more sensitive façade adjacent to Crown Hall while opening up the studios on the northern façade to natural daylighting and views towards the Chicago skyline.

The gallery spaces intended for sculpture allow natural light to highlight the work, whereas more sensitive pieces are contained in areas in which the lighting can be more carefully controlled. 4
The central atrium channels light through the midrise, even to the first floor. Offices are located on the top three floors in order to give the gallery staff the full benefit of natural lighting.

Section Perspective
The vertical circulation integrated with the library engages all who enter the education center. unlike the majority of libraries which one must seek out the library, the integrated wall engages the user and promotes “impulse use.”

The visitor begins the journey through the center in relative darkness, with few perforations allowing natural light in.
As the visitor moves forward, the number of perforations in the metal panels increase. This effect recreates the sensation of light piercing though clouds as they travel across the prairie.
The journey terminates in the courtyard where tours and educational activities take place. The glass doors fold open on a track to promote connectivity with the environment.
