An evolution of the Isokon Penguin Donkey , Laundry Donkey departs from the traditional book storing function of the collection in favour of dirty laundry. The Penguin Donkey was designed with the dimensions of a penguin paperback in mind.Taking this specific nature of the storage space, each of Laundry Donkey’s saddlebags holds one load of washing, which when full can be unbuttoned from the donkey and carried to the washing machine.

Isokon : Laundry Donkey :

The textile based aesthetic of the main body, using buttons and thread as hooks, links the saddlebag narrative to the laundry storing function. The different coloured buttons mark the white’s bag and the colour’s bag, eliminating the task of separat-ing your laundry before the wash.

The main body of the donkey is CNC routed out of 12mm plywood, with a double skin of 1.5 mm Plywood curving over the top. The calico bags could also be produced partly using a CNC cutter

Stamp Creative uses die cutting technology to create flat pack, self assembly lighting. Swallow light takes advantage of the die cutting technology, and reduces the stress of self assembly by focusing on graphic rather han structural pattern. Peeling away the Swallow stickers (cut into the back layer of adhesive vinyl) produces illuminated swallows, whilst placing the removed stickers elsewhere creates shadowed swallows, giving the user creative control and endless pattern possibilities. This creative input in the assembly process enhances the users relationship with the light.

Swallow shade is one component, flat pack and simple to assemble and designed to fit a 4 pin CFL bulb. The inner sheet of the shade is composed of thin adhesive vinyl (with swal-lows dye cut out) mounted onto structural vinyl. The tab on the edge of the vinyl cone can be peeled away to reveal an adhesive strip, which secures to the other edge of the sheet to create the cone shade. This attaches around the wire of the light, hiding the bulky CFL bal-last.

The pieces for this chair were acquired from the firewood stack of an elderly man who lives down my road. It takes the surviving components from two matching chairs, one more weathered and worn than the other ,the seat support from this chair has deformed to create an open curve with finger joints at the end, these form the backrest of the chair, embracing the sitter.

Originally a two broken pub chairs, the rocking stool took form due to the saddle like shape of the seat. The rockers, legs ,seat and rein are made from components of these two chairs, the metal support a piece of workshop scrap. Detailing like the upholstery trim rein, and subtly twisted ‘walking’ legs add to stools character.

Hilton for D&AD : Easel

Based on a tripod structure, Easel has been designed to angle the mirror so that women of all heights can comfortably use it whilst sitting. The traditional lip un-derneath the mirror invites the user to place mascara, eyeliner or lipsticks where an artist would keep their tools.

Corian + one required a small piece of furniture or table-ware that used Corian in conjunction with one other material. I Wanted the second material to have more than just an aesthetic union with the Corian , and to be incorporated in the moulding process. I chose binding, approaching the heated Corian like leather, as to me it seemed the bending and folding properties of the Corian bore a closer relationship to leather than ceramic.

Corian + One : Stitched Vessels

I used the cotton thread to bind the thermo-formed corian before putting it back into the oven, this allowed me to create numerous folds and cmplex vessels such as this jug without a mould. the pro-cess depends on reducing he strain on the stitching holes , and the order in which the folds are made and holes are drilled.

Page 15: Portfolio

This ‘scrunched’ vase’s production relies on stitching to hold folds in place when it is repeatedly thermo-formed. Made from a flat 2mm thick, 25mm diameter circle of corian, the edges are folded up in stages, as it cools too quickly to be formed in one go.it gives the flowers a random arrangement, where other vases formalise them , resembling their natural growth patterns.
