OPEN is porous, with meandering ramps shap-

ing the campus. A pedestrian walkway allows the

community access via an elevated public trail,

while also granting views into the performance art

school. The path is pulled inside a student gallery,

allowing the public an opportunity to experience

the artwork of students on a daily basis.

Linked Path

NESTLED STUDIOS creates a venue where the artist

has a panopticonic view of the guests that enter the

gallery space, while also enjoying an elevated view of

the West Park.

THE MUSIC LAB is a hybrid building comprised of an arcade

of recording studios that support public performance

spaces. The building’s facade is a large staircase, which al-

lows the public a direct route to the rooftop venue, where

the outdoor stage grants a beautiful view of Ann Arbors

roofscape to the north.

1) PLANT LABCreation of transgenic plants: Combining plants

that are hyperaccumulators of heavy metals with

plants that have large biomass.

POLLUTION EXTRACTION PROCESS

2) NURSERYGreenhouse atmosphere to prepare the various

plants to highly polluted soils.

BY-PRODUCTS = Clean soil/water and extracted metals

4) HARVESTPlants are harvested and metal is extracted from

their biomass. Depending on the toxicity of the

pollutant, plants should be handled with care.

INPUT: Soil/Water polluted by heavy metals

Zn Mg Cu

3B) ACTIVATION: WATERHeavy metals are present in the polluted water of

the river and surface water. Irrigation through

constructed wetlands can result in metal

harvesting through rizhofiltration.

3A) ACTIVATION: LANDPlants absorb heavy metals into their tissue

through their roots. Depth of extraction varies

with species. Crop rotation may be utilized to

counteract different pollutants.

Solve a social issue using Architectural Infrastructure

I saw the pollution of the Detroit River

as a negative barrier to the commu-

nity’s ability to enjoy the once beautiful

ecosystem.

PLANTWORKS uses hyperaccumulating

plants to absorb heavy metals, natural-

ly cleaning the water and soil. A board-

walk dissects the infrastructure, allow-

ing the public access to the waterfront,

while creating a visually educational

tour of the water-filter plant.

Reuse: The WATERSHED is constructed mainly with

scrap wood that was donated to this community garden. To

minimize costs, I designed the shed to utilize as much scrap

materials as possible. (Rain Barrel pending instalation)
