as a child I enjoyed making things. at first it was out

of lego, then paper and staples until I was fabricating

pedal prix cars at school. now I have completed

a 4 year Bachelor degree of Industrial design

at the university of south australia I am seeking

professional opportunities which will develop my

skills and push my design thinking.

I am passionate about all design elements, from

aesthetics and usability through to manufacturing

and sustainability. However I enjoy collaborating

with others to create both wonderful objects and

meaningful experiences.

Work SAM SoRgIovANNI DESIgNS: Fremantle, WADesign work experience, Summer 2009/10aided senior designers on super Yacht projects. My duties

were creating solidWorks models and renderings for client and

manufacturers while assisting with design details.

LoNSDALE AutoMAtIC ENgINEERINg: Adelaide, SACasual, 2009 - 2010a small family business that produced small turned and machined

parts for clients such as brass inserts for moulding, pins, etc.

• source material for manufacture

• Calculate cycle time, costing and quote on new production

parts

• design and create jigs for machining parts and assemblies

• assembling components

• Cleaning machined parts

JuREN ENgINEERINg: Adelaide, SACasual, 2003 - 2009family run steel engineering work shop that completed fabrication

projects and also repairs to civil construction and transport

Intended use• for quick response and arrival of short to medium surf life saving rescues. • fill the gap between current paddle out rescue boards and Jet skies / or Inflatable rescue Boats (IrB)

surf life saving is an organisation which saves and protects life on australian beaches.a surf lifesaver is a trained volunteer who patrols our beaches. they undertake a number of roles including aquatic rescues, providing first aid, emergency care and providing surf safety information to the public.

CrIterIa

surf lIfe saVInG australIa

With 158,806 members and 310 affiliated surf life saving clubs, surf life saving is the largest volunteer movement of its kind in australia. the majority of the services are provided by surf lifesavers who complete surf patrols voluntarily.

Additional• follow sls guidlines and specification for equipment, branding and procedures.• Because the majority of surf lifesavers are volunteers, minimal additional training would be preferable.

concePt DeVeloPmentafter the research phase and understanding the tight constraints, some quick ideations lead to full scale foam model. this early approach to a full scale model highlighted major flaws and design considerations. the full scale model was observed in the water for such details as the flotation, water line, weight distribution and any other issues to note.

design Attributes

resCuer

resCued Person

the style of the board was broken down into design attributes and analysed into relation of view point from the target users; the Rescuer and Rescued Person.

these view points were recorded and a median was found on theDesign Attributes Chart.

Bulkier Nosea bulkier nose allows for more ‘PunCH’ when battling the surf break.

tow Pointa tow point allows for a rope to be tied to the front of the board turning the board into rescue sled or to be returned to shore incase of flat battery.

Front guardthe rubber over mould front guard helps protect the board and reduce injury in case of frontal collisions.

In mould graphicsgraphics and surf rescue text are moulded in to the body during production for better durability.

grab guardsgrab guards allow rescuers to quickly pick up the board and drag it to the water.

Li-ion Battery Packa removable high energy discharge lithium Ion battery pack, allows the battery to be replaced and recharged.

Page 19: Portfolio

3 Quaterturn Actuated Fins3 fins allow for better stability and sharper turns. the fins rotate out and into the body when the throttle is engaged and return once the throttle is released to protect them from damage.

grab ropeneoprene grab ropes for struggling and panicking victims.Non slip matting

textured 3mm non slip matting on concave surface allows water to flow to the edges.

Jet outletoval nozzle funnels high pressure jet stream creating thrust.

tail guarda strong uv stabilized tail guard protects the body from damage and abrasion.

two Riding Positionsthe throttle handles are located at two positions on the jet board to allow the shifting of the rescuer’s body weight. Higher up when heading out and further back when returning with a rescued person.

a new product that will extend Breville’s product range into a new market

“so its important that we are aware that our products need to fit into the majority of kitchens and enhance those, rather than trying to stand out or look different in those... the philosophy that we have is to have a balance between those two constraints, to make sure that there is a clear family between our products, but not at the sacrifice of any of the individual function”

Richard Hoaredesign and Innovation directorBreville group ltd

It should enhance the Breville brand and reputation for quality

It should be consistent with Breville’s design philosophy

01 Bosch Ixothe Bosch IXo Cordless screwdriver was tested on users along with other hand held devices and the weighted foam model.

02 thumb buttonthe location of the slide switch for the thumb was highlighted as a excellent position for operation.

03 Handle forwardthe foam model with the position of the handle located further forward of the body.

04 Handle backthe foam model with the position of the handle located at the back of the body.

05 Preferredthe foam model, with the position of the handle located further forward of the body was preferred because of the weight distribution. this was especially true with female users and unexperienced power tool users.

06 undesirableHowever, it was noted that some experienced power tool users preferred this position because they could apply more physical force.

tannoy, a uk leading hi-fi audio manufacturer wants to update their entry level sensys dC2 speaker. their main aim was to develope the style of the speaker cabinet to attract more ‘young, rich and fashionable’ buyers (eg. football stars) compared to their current audiophile market.

sensYs dC2With the sensys, tannoy has combined the core element of sound quality with the other equally essential ingredients, cutting edge technology, clean aesthetic design and affordability, to produce a class leading range of exceptional loudspeakers

Page 55: Portfolio

desIgn detaIls

the concept for the new sensYs dC2 was to follow the same lines as its home theater cousin, the arena satellIgHt.“Blending form and function, this beautifully crafted audio system offers much more than gorgeous styling”.

the concept is to be manufactured from solidsurface such as duPont Corian, which allows better driver performance, ability to create the form and choice of speaker cabinet colours.
