Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in Gdynia, Poland recently signed a PLN53.8 million (approximately US$17.3 million) agreement with the Center of European Union Transport Project to subsidize a portion of the PLN153 million (approximately US$49.2 million) expansion project of the terminal, which is expected to be completed in 2015.

BCT was granted the subsidy as part of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program Measure 7.4. “Development of Intermodal Transport.” BCT will be investing in new equipment, yard area improvements and IT systems. The equipment to be purchased include, among others, new quay cranes, rubber tired gantries and rail mounted gantries. Terminal yards and roads shall be modernized, and the number of reefer container racks will

also be increased. A differential global positioning system will be installed on the equipment, and automated gates will be implemented. The investment will increase BCT’s annual capacity by 60 percent, from 750,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to 1.2 million TEUs. Established in 1979, the BCT in the Gdynia Port is one of the biggest terminals in the Baltic region, and is the leading container terminal in Poland.

Contecon Guayaquil SA (CGSA) recently rolled out optical character recognition technology (OCR) to step up the automation of its quay crane (QC) fleet in the Guayaquil Container and Multipurpose Terminals (GCMT) in Ecuador. ICTSI tapped San Diego, California-based APS Technology Group, Inc. in the implementation of the OCR technology. ICTSI’s flagship Manila International Container Terminal was the first in the Group to adapt the technology. Aside from MICT and CGSA, Tecon Suape, S.A., an ICTSI subsidiary in Brazil, is also set to implement the technology at the Suape Container Terminal in Pernambuco province. QCs equipped with OCR devices automatically identify containers improving data accuracy, throughput and security while decreasing overall operating costs. CGSA uses APS Matchmaker System to automatically associate containers to terminal- owned trucks during hand-off, allowing for work assignment and

confirmation without manual intervention. “Using the APS solution with our new weight capture system has improved our productivity and processing time significantly. Several time-consuming manual steps have been removed from the process, so throughput movement is faster and we also have a much safer environment,” Jaime Guazhco, CGSA Project Manager, said. In addition to the OCR, CGSA has

implemented a spreader based system for container weight capture, automatically collecting information in real time, and improving container processing times. All data from the combined solution is fully integrated to the Navis SPARCS TOS. With the addition of the OCR and weight capture system, CGSA has created easy steps for customers while improving processing time and productivity.

AGCT appoints new CFOBy Iva Roman

Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) recently appointed Julijana Stefanic as the Company’s new Chief Financial Officer. Before joining AGCT last 1 April, Mrs. Stefanic worked as the Regional Finance Manager of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) for the Balkan region i.e. Croatia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Serbia since 2009. She first became MSC’s Finance Manager in 2007. She also had stints in different Croatian companies in Rijeka. Mrs. Stefanic holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Rijeka. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, sailing and nature tripping.

International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), represented by Gagan Seksaria, Africa Regional Office Chief Financial Officer, took part in the 3rd Africa Ports, Logistics and Supply Chain Conference held in Accra, Ghana last

19 to 20 March. Top industry professionals, port authorities and other stakeholders from across the African continent attended the ICTSI-sponsored conference, which was opened by the Deputy Transport Minister of Ghana. In his speech, Mr. Seksaria expressed optimism at the rapid economic growth across Africa, and highlighted the role of West Africa, particularly Ghana and Nigeria. He suggested that port capacity development will have to be accelerated to accommodate this growth, and accentuated the role of public-private partnerships balancing the interests of port users, port operators and port authorities. Mr. Seksaria cited ICTSI’s Madagascar terminal as an example of a successful public-private partnership, and used the opportunity to introduce the proposed 2.5 million-TEU Lekki Container Terminal in Nigeria. ICTSI was recently selected as the preferred operator of the terminal. Mr. Seksaria explained that not only will Lekki provide a state-of-the-art alternative to the existing, congested facilities in Nigeria, it will also prove to be a suitable regional hub. Mr. Seksaria concluded his speech by sharing ICTSI’s aggressive growth focus globally and its interest in African investments. Photo shows Mr. Seksaria speaking before the conference delegates.

ICTSI joins African ports confab

ICTSI hosts farewell dinner for APAInternational Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) sponsored a farewell dinner for the technical committee of the 11th ASEAN Ports Association (APA) held in Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel Manila last 28 March. The committee visited the Philippines to prepare for the APA Sports Meet, which will be held in 2013. The APA Sports Meet is held every three years, and hosting is rotated among the APA members. This will be the second time that the Philippines will host the sports meet, the last being in 1995. Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce S.A. (SPIA), an International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) subsidiary in Colombia, formally turned over 112 houses to families belonging to two ethnic communities in Buenaventura, Colombia. The houses of 112 families, who belonged to La Brea and Baja Calima communities, were affected by the construction of a 21-kilometer access road to and from the SPIA terminal. Eleven more houses will be constructed soon, while 47

families opted for monetary compensation. The beneficiaries moved into their brand-new 64-square meter, three-bedroom concrete houses in the last quarter of 2011. During formal turnover ceremonies held at an elementary school in La Brea, Buenaventura last 29 March, Dr. Miguel Abisambra, SPIA General Manager, said he appreciates the efforts and active participation of the communities in the housing project. He added that this is one example of how teamwork brings about results. Dr. Maria Constanza Garcia Botero, Colombian Ministry of Transport Vice Minister of Infrastructure, commended the efforts of SPIA in helping the communities. Vice Minister Botero said these kinds of initiatives are important contributions to the development of the area. For his part, Honorable Bartolo Valencia Ramos, Buenaventura Mayor, said he hopes that more private companies in the area would follow the example of SPIA whose projects made a significant impact on the people of Buenaventura. Hernan Rodallega, La Brea Community Council Representative, expressed his appreciation of the positive change the housing project had on the quality of lives of the people in the community. He added that he is looking forward to the completion of the terminal, which he hopes would give more jobs to his people. Before the turnover, Dr. Abisambra presented ICTSI’s global operations and the SPIA port project to guests from the government and the press at the Tequendama Inn in Estacion, Buenaventura. The guests then visited the actual houses in the project site.

ICTSI-FI cited in Motolite’s battery recycling projectICTSI Foundation, Inc. (ICTSI-FI) received recognition for its used battery donations from Motolite last 11 April. Motolite’s Balik Baterya (Return of batteries) Project aimed to derive funds from used lead acid batteries (ULAB) of different companies. These funds were then used to implement environment, education and community / social development projects. The proceeds were used in Lusog Dunong (Health Knowledge), a supplementary feeding program for daycare, kindergarten and grade 1 students of Parola and Isla Puting Bato in Manila. ICTSI Oregon, Inc. (ICTSI Oregon) and the Port of Portland recently commemorated the maiden voyage of Hamburg Sud vessel Cap Cleveland to T6 Terminal. The Company warmly welcomed and presented the vessel and its crew with a plaque. Earlier this year, Hamburg Sud joined with Hapag Lloyd to offer a weekly service between Portland, Oregon and the United States West Coast and the Mediterranean, with connecting feeder service to South America, Africa and the Middle East. Hapag Lloyd has been calling Portland fortnightly with this service. However, with the addition of Hamburg Sud, both lines are now able to offer a weekly call at Portland’s T6 Terminal. With additional ships calling Portland, the shipping lines not only improved the regularity of calls, but also provided a more dependable and competitive option for shippers utilizing the port. They first took the Crane Technicians course, a professional training for PL7 and Premium PLC software by Schneider Electric Ltd., the same company that developed and installed the PLC system on the two Samsung cranes of AGCT a few years ago. Bong Evangelista, Sergio Hingzon Jr., Paulo Peñalba and John Sazon, Seminar Facilitators, discussed topics on safety awareness, dangerous goods, chemical safety, and fire safety and hazard identification. International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), together with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Manila Fire District, conducted an Advanced Firefighting seminar for members of the ICTSI Emergency Response Team (ERT) last 22 to 23 March. Major Bonifacio Carta, BFP-MFD Chief Inspector, headed the two-day seminar held in the ICTSI Safety Office Training Room. Major Carta explained the causes of fire, fire prevention and fire-extinguishing methods. He also demonstrated the use of firefighting equipment and techniques. Forty-six ERT members took part in the actual firefighting drill using the Company’s fire truck during the last seminar day held at the Manila International Container Terminal Berth 6.
