FLATNESSTHE BRIEF FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A ‘TOUCHSTONE’ THAT WOULD INFORM OUR CONCEPT FOR THE SCHOOL PROJECT AND HELP US TO RELATE OUR PROJECT TO tHE SPECIFIC MARSH SITE IN GRANGETOWN, CARDIFF. MY TOUCHSTONE CONVEYS THE DIFFERENT HISTORICAL LAYERS OF THE MARSH SITE, FROM THE DIFFERENT TOPOGRAPHICAL LAYERS TO THE SOCIAL LAYERS THAT ARE PRESENT. THE ‘FLATNESS’ OF THE MARSH IS WHAT WE INITIALLY PERCIEVE, HOWEVER IF ONE LOOKS DEEPER THE WILL DISCOVER THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PLACE.

2. SCHOOLTHE BRIEF FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A SCHOOL ON A MARSH SITE, WITH RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL AREAS AT THE BACK OF THE SITE AND VIEWS TO CARDIFF BAY AT THE FRONT. MY DESIGN RESPONDED TO THESE SITE CONDITIONS BY CLOSING IT OFF AT THE REAR BY A SERIES OF BRICk WALLS AND SLOWLY OPENING IT UP TO THE VIEWS AND WILDERNESS OF THE MARSH.THE BRICK WALLS SLOWLY DISINTEGRATE TURNING IN TO A LIGHTER WOODEN STRUCTURE. THE ROOVES OF THE CLASSROOMS AND HALL, LOOKING TOWARD THE MARSH, SLOpE UPWARDS TO EMBRACE THE MARSH AND THE SOUTH-EAST LIGHT.

WE DESIGNED A HOLIDAY HOUSE FOR PEOPLE IN THE EMMAUS COMMUNITY.THESE PEOPLE ARE RECOVER-ING DRUG ADDICTS AND EX-HOMELESS.WE WORKED IN PARTNER-SHIP WITH THEM, LISTENING TO THEIR IDEAS TO DESIGN A PLACE SUITED TO THEIR NEEDS.WE BASED OUR DESIGN AROUND AN EXISTING old FARM BUILDING ON SITE.

MY SCHEME FOR THE INDI-VIDUAL DWELLING WAS TO DESIGN A HOUSE WITH MAX-IMUM FLEXIBILITY THAT COULD GROW AND SHRINK OVER TIME, DEPENDING ON THE INHABITANTS NEEDS. I DESIGNED A NUMBER OF COM-PONENT PARTS THAT COULD BE ADDED IF NEEDED.
