Dear Mr. Michael
The following portfolio contains the contents of my Rhetoric 101 class from the Summer Session
2012 at the American University in Cairo Egypt.
Attached are first my freewrites, followed by the collage that collected mainly some of the
important information collected from my freewrites, then the 3 analysis we wrote and for each the
drafts I wrote and this will show you the process I went through to get to the final drafts.
I’ve decided to organize my work chronologically. I ordered the contents in this way because we
learned that writing is a process and this will show the progress from the beginning of the course
until the end.
Thank you for helping us through the semester. I always thought summer courses would be boring
but I was wrong you tried to do everything to let us enjoy what we are doing and it worked. Thank
you again!

Dear daddy, I hope you enjoyed your breakfast! I heard you’re going with the jeep club on a
trip to the desert this weekend. Unfortunately I cannot join as my friends and I are planning to go to
the beach, but we’re still looking for a ride.. So, I was wondering whether you would agree to give
me the new car as we don’t have a ride and since you’re taking the 4 wheel to the desert this
weekend. I promise I’ll bring it back without any scratch. Please

Who am I? This is really weird I don’t know what to write.. But let’s see.
I’m a 20 year old Egyptian girl that is enjoying life. I’m very cold and I’m always relaxed and I
never worry about anything not even my grades or GPA. Why?? This is because I don’t care and as
long as I pass my courses I’m happy and satisfied. Many people see this as an irresponsible
behavior. I don’t think this is irresponsible, not because someone’s cold and never worries about
most things that happen that does automatically mean he’s irresponsible.

The Boat
This should tell you how to make a boar of paper only:
Fold the paper twice and then draw a line that separates the paper into two parts and fold its two
ends in triangles and then fold the bottom part of the paper upside down and you’ll have a paper boat

First submitted Freewrite
Freewriting is extremely important, because it allows the writer to get to know his style and gives him a
chance to develop it, therefore as mentioned in Freewriting by Peter Elbow that regular practice to do
free writing is important. People mostly forget the importance of freewriting, and always stop a lot as
they write and get back to the last sentecnes in order to check on the spelling mistakes and interrupt their
thoughts.
When practicing free writing, people should pay more attention to the rules of this exercise and keep
writing for a specific time and then should get back to what he wrote at the beginning and start editing.

I enjoy writing! It is the one thing that gives me the chance to break free and say what is on my
mind without thinking , it allows me to express my thoughts and feelings with neither rules nor
limits or boundaries.
What a beautiful sunny day, oh! by the way my name is rose, I was chatting with my friend tulip
when suddenly a freak decided to cut me off and forced me to live someplace else. Here I am now
living in a beautiful chrystal vase still trying to figure out who is that selfish guy that gave himself
the right to put my life in danger like that! I understand people are worried nowadays and need us
flowers to help them forget about the political issues!
I hate politics!! People just talk talk talk. No one says anything real or true, its all just a big lie! I
hate lying! Why am I writing this now? Who am I to keep judging people like Mubarak? Who am
I? I’m just a human being, I also make mistakes, in fact I’m sometimes selfish! Who am I?
Who am I to drive such a nice car like that?
Elections,
Competition
, and a mixture of fear and excitement
This is what is actually going on my mind these days.. nothing much
Life keeps getting boring, it needs something exciting like going to the beach.
What about my hobbies? Playing the piano, dancing salsa?! I don’t have much time.
I need to finish this free writing, in 30 seconds

Nowadays Egypt is struggling between two very different candidates. According to Abdel
Rahman Hussein in the guardian, Morsi claims his victory and convinces everyone with it.
Although the final results of the presidential elections 2012 did not yet appear, Morsi proclaims his
victory with confidence.
Morsi held a press conference at 4am saying he had beaten Ahmed Shafik by almost one
million. He also assures that he will be a president not only for the ones who voted for him, but for
all Egyptians. People who follow him all went to Tahrir Square and celebrated Morsi’s victory.
Also the supreme council of the armed forces issued the new constitution laws which gave the
future president limited authority.
The author showed in his article the way Morsis followers acted after hearing his speech at
the conference, which shows exactly how confident Morsi is. Their behavior was really weird and
shocking, because no one can tell until now who got the highest votes and therefore it is really
weird to see how confident he is. Also, Morsis behavior shows that they are onto something or it is
part of a plan that they are doing in the case of him losing the elections when the final results come
out, because no one would show this much confidence unless he knows either the actual results or a
deal was arranged with the military.
The military dissolved the parliament, in which most members belonged to the Freedom and
Justice party, and therefore many people believe that there is a deal between the military and the
Muslim Brotherhood, that they leave the parliament and that the future president will be one of
them.
15
Morsi gave a speech in the press conference and he promised to be fair and to be president
of all Egyptians not only for the ones who voted for him. “I will be serving all Egyptians, and
standing at an equal distance from all of them.” He is trying to win every Egyptian by telling he will
treat everyone in a fair way, regardless to what religion they believe in. It is now not easy to believe
what he says, because mostly they say or promise something and do the opposite, and therefore we
cannot trust what he says or what any promise that any member of the muslim brotherhood say.
The article showed the side of Morsi only, but he never mentioned anything about the other
candidate, whose followers are also optimistic and believe that he might win as well. The situation
is getting more confusing and more difficult than before, as almost every Egyptian is confused and
has the feeling that the revolution might fail because neither of the candidates are good enough to
represent a country. But Egypt must have faith and must believe in the change that the revolution
did and should never give up the dream of freedom.

Being able to analyze yourself is a talent, because not everyone is able to admit his weak
points. But having the ability to analyze yourself is really important as it’s the only way to help a
person get rid of any bad habits. In order to be able to do so, a person must think of any action he
does or did in the past, whether they are bad or good and start thinking of reasons why he
committed these actions. I personally find it really difficult to do so but I did my best to remember
the actions I do most and never pay attention to. The most noticeable ones were me not doing my
best in subjects I don’t like as I also get distracted very easily mostly when I’m studying and I’m a
person that doesn’t believe in taking revenge.
I don’t do my best in subjects I don’t like. For example, math and any subject that deals with
numbers. This is terrible in fact math is the subject I should be putting all my effort in, as it is the
only subject I’m really bad at. But when I started thinking about the real reason why I don’t do my
best in such subjects, I found that the main reason was my school. The German school; the German
teacher’s goal was to underestimate the students and make them feel uncomfortable about subjects
23
they are not good at and never encouraging them hoping the student will be angry and will do his
best to prove them wrong. But this was never the case with me. I never liked that way and never
wanted to prove them wrong as I believe that if they succeed in doing this, they will use this method
to make me do anything.
Another problem is me being distracted while studying very easily. This is a major problem,
because I miss out a lot of fun, just because I don’t get my work done time. The reason for this is
that I have so many hobbies and I don’t have much time to do most of them. For example,
whenever I’m studying and remember a song, I just go up and play it on the piano, or whenever I
remember any new salsa move I learned recently I just go up and practice. This is leading to me
delaying my work until the due date and I have to stay up till very late to finish them. This is not
good, because I’m supposed to be much more mature than this and I’m supposed to be a lot more
responsible than this, but I can’t help it.
Taking revenge I find the most ridicules action anyone could do. Whenever anyone hears
me talking about how much I hate taking revenge, people just think I’m weak and naive. The reason
for this is, that I was always brought up by the Christian believe that we should forgive one another.
And my parents always stressed on the verse in the bible where it said “Ye have heard that it hath
been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you,
and persecute you;” and therefore I believe that revenge I never believed in revenge and I don’t see
this as weakness.
Those were mainly the points I noticed recently that can briefly help me analyze some of my
weak points, but I’m pretty sure that there’s a lot more than just these three. But to be honest I’m
not sure if I have the ability to change any of them or to behave differently as I don’t see that any of
the weak points mentioned above annoy anyone.

peoples’ lives positively if you forgive them instead of harming them back and as for the other two
in order not to be distracted I need to prioritize my hobbies in order not to be able to manage my

Is the capital punishment a solution?
Capital Punishment is one of the issues that annoy me; I think it is not fair to decide that this
person just because he committed a crime should be killed. In many countries they banned capital
punishment as some of them believe that no one has the right to decide on when to end another
person’s life. However after banning capital punishment according to some statistics the murder rate
increased in some of those countries than before. I always hoped that any organization that deals
with human rights should forbid capital punishment in all countries as I don’t see any relation
between the increase of murder rate and forbidding this type of punishment as the reasons why
people kill are not because the punishment is not strong of frightful enough, but because of many
other issues. Unfortunately in Egypt, it is a different case. They cannot forbid capital punishment
because of two things, the majority in Egypt was brought up in a way that requires having frightful
punishments and because if they stay in prisons they will be treated in a terrible way and will later
on become more aggressive, so it is better to have the capital punishment in Egypt.
The Egyptian culture is different from any other. Egyptians raise their children in a different
way; children are always being treated in a terrible way in schools and at home. They are being hit
30
all the time without knowing why and this builds up in their characters that they only act
responsible and respectful because they are afraid of punishment and not because they know that
this should be their natural behavior. Also I have to admit that the way Egyptians are being brought
up is the reason for many of them becoming criminals; therefore the presence of such a frightful
punishment can prevent bad things from happening.
Also in any other situation I would say that leaving the criminal in prison for a long time
instead of killing him, can help him become a better person as he will start thinking of what he did
and feel bad about it, but in Egypt since the prisoners live in bad conditions as the prisons are
horrible people who stay there for a long time become very aggressive and when they come out
they cause a lot more problems than before. And therefore the murder rate will unfortunately
increase.
The capital punishment is really bad but unfortunately necessary in some countries
according to its culture. So if they want to ban capital punishment they should first raise the new
generations in a more civilized way, so people will be good not because they are afraid of
punishment, but because they are psychologically stable.

equipped; the strictness that the prisoners are forced to spend half of their lives in allows them
without noticing to become more aggressive than before. And therefore the murder rate will

In the Egyptian culture capital punishment is accepted and not seen as a crime against
human rights because people in Egypt mostly see things from a religious perspective and since in
Islam and the Old Testament in Christianity the death penalty was mentioned they believe that this
is the right way without thinking twice. This is related to the Egyptian culture as people mostly
learn some beliefs when they are young and never rethink of any of them. This issue was never
brought up in Egypt to be negotiable, as the majority doesn’t see it as something bad according to
their beliefs. Unfortunately the capital punishment is necessary in some countries, and the decision
to forbid it in any country should be taken according how civilized people are and how they were
raised and the beliefs they were taught. So if they want to ban capital punishment they should first
raise the new generations in a more civilized way that will help a society succeed without the
presence of any frightful punishment.

The German school; the German
teacher’s goal was to underestimate the students and make them feel uncomfortable about subjects
they are not good at and never encouraging them hoping the student will be angry and will do his
best to prove them wrong.

This is not
good, I’m supposed to be much more mature than this because I’m always able to handle difficult
tasks more difficult than this and I’m supposed to be a lot more responsible than this, but I can’t
help it.
Taking revenge I find the most ridicules action anyone could do. Whenever anyone hears
me talking about how much I hate taking revenge, people just think I’m weak and naive. The reason
for this is, that I was always brought up by the Christian belief that we should forgive one another.
And my parents always stressed on the verse in the Bible where it said “Ye have heard that it hath
been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you,
and persecute you;” and therefore I never believed in revenge; I never saw it as weakness only the
people who believe that were just brought up differently.
Those were mainly the points I noticed recently that can help me analyze my character
better, but to be honest I’m not sure if I have the ability to change them as I don’t believe that all of
them need to be changed especially the last one as I think that forgiving people is not a weak or a
naive behaviour, but it’s way stronger than taking revenge and this behaviour can change other
peoples’ lives positively if you forgive them instead of harming them back and as for the other two
in order not to be distracted I need to prioritize my hobbies or I need to give myself a lot more free
time and let the study time be shorter but I try to finish my work early and fast and reward myself

with the free time and that way I believe I will be able to get my work done on time and do other
fun stuff too.

This is basically the process I went through to finish RHET101, it was a very useful course
As I believe that my writing has improved and I learned the proper way to start any writing piece, whether
its an essay, analysis or anything else. I learned to freewrite as it is the only way that shows what I’m
thinking deep inside, also this can help me recognize my voice in writing and will help others recognize it
too later on.
The course was definitely interesting
