et zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten, the Far Wild

West bezit een diep ingewortelde multiculturaliteit.

Nergens anders in het land is de etnische diversi-

teit zo uitgesproken als in deelstaat Californië. Het is het klank-

bord voor menig immigrantenkind, het lokmiddel en de belofte

voor een beter leven onder de alom vertegenwoordigende zon.

De multiculturaliteit van Cali is gestoeld op een droom - de

Amerikaanse droom - maar eveneens op de rug van de minder-

heden: indianen, Chinezen, Afrikaanse Amerikanen en tal van

andere nationaliteiten die hun weg vonden naar het land van

melk en honing. De staat kon ondanks een duister onderlaagje

de mythe van the promised land geruime tijd in stand houden,

maar aan het einde van de 20ste sprong de bubbel open.

Californië faalde in het behoud van haar eigen mythe. In heel de

Verenigde Staten trokken de ogen open, het etnische stoofpotje

kookte over. Indianen werden in reservaten geduwd en de zwarte,

bruine of gele man vocht voor zijn gelijk. Het happy story verkreeg

geen happy end. Maar hoe kan het dan dat Californië vandaag de

dag nog steeds het imago heeft van the ‘Golden State’? Waar de

grond zo vruchtbaar is en gevuld is met goud en zilver. Waar de

zon 300 dagen per jaar schijnt en de mensen gelukkig zijn. Ja,

het leven is hier goed. Zelfs de minderheden houden zich met de

nagels krampachtig vast aan ‘hun’ Cali. Een plaats waar de burger

een status heeft. Waar men trots is om er bij te horen, om deel uit

te maken van een gebied dat jarenlang door de wereld gekoes-

terd werd en wordt. Nog steeds. Maar hoe begon het allemaal?

Wat is de oorzaak dat men ginds vandaag zo’n 90 verschillende

talen spreekt? Waarom heeft Californië ondanks de raciale kwes-

ties en het oppervlakkige karakter toch zulk een aantrekkings-

kracht? En wat met Arizona, Utah en Nevada? Wat is hun verhaal

in het Wilde Westenplaatje?

“La Vallée de la mort?,” zei een Franstalige dame toen ik haar nog vóór de reis

uitlegde dat ik niet meer in de kledingszaak ging werken, dit omdat ik een grote reis

ga maken. Death Valley, daar was de dame ook al geweest. Lang geleden wel. Maar

ze herinnert zich nog de ondraaglijke hitte. “We zijn er door gereden toen onze

kinderen tieners waren,“ trad haar echtgenoot bij. “Pfoe, wat was het daar warm.”

De dame lachte om de herinnering. “We aten een pizza voordat we de woestijn

introkken,” zei ze, “maar we konden die niet eens met ons vieren opeten, zo groot

was die.” Haar echtgenoot sprong in: “We hebben die pizza dan maar meegenomen.

In de Vallée de la mort kregen we weer honger. Je moet weten dat de woestijn erg

uitgestrekt is.” ‘De dame grinnikte. “We zetten de pizzadoos op de motorkap zodat

we er met z’n vieren weer van konden eten, maar voor we het wisten, warmde die

pizza op!”, zei ze en samen met haar man lachte ze. “Kan je dat geloven?,’” zei de

echtgenoot. Ik zei toen alleen maar iets als “amai...” In m’n eigen bedenkende dat

zoiets wel erg extreem is. Kan een toeristische plek zo heet zijn dat een koude pizza

louter door de zon zo opwarmt dat hij gaat bakken?

Ja... Dat merk ik enkele weken later. Wanneer ik op dezelfde plek sta als het echt-

paar zo’n twintig geleden. Death Valley. Eigenlijk is het hier praktisch gezien niet

echt toeristisch. Het heeft er niets van, maar toch prikkelt het vele mensen. Toen ik

enkele maanden voor ons vertrek op de operatietafel lag vanwege een vervelende

wijsheidstand, bracht de anesthesist een thema aan om me wat gerust te stellen.

“Zo, jij gaat binnenkort op reis? Naar Amerika? Daar ben ik ook eens geweest. Death

Valley? Pas daar maar voor op. Het gaat een mooie ervaring worden, maar zorg

er toch maar voor dat je liters water mee hebt,” sprak ze, met de nadruk op ‘liters.’

For Christ’s sake. De verwachtingen staan dus hoog gespannen voor deze tweede

beruchte plek.

Rondborstige pitspoes

Die ochtend bij Dunkin’ Donuts (eindelijk!) maken we de balans op van een week-

endje Vegas. Flabbergasted. Blij dat we dat gezien hebben, maar ook blij dat we

mogen vertrekken. Het Las Vegas waar het om draait: jonge meisjes in nauwelijks

verhullende outfits in casino’s, hotels, stripteasebars en zelfs in restaurants. De

extravagante rooftop bars, volledig mee met de hippe-vogelcultuur on the top of

the building. De eeuwige zoektocht naar de uitgang. Driftige vrijgezellen, de stereo-

tiepe toerist en de koele kikkers die een kwartje van hun riante poen gaarne in het

Voor de laatste maal fiets ik langs de Vaartkom naar het statige Hungaria-gebouw. Zelfs de heuvelachtige fietstocht ga ik best een beetje missen. En de koffie. Ja, de koffie. Ik ben dan geen fanatieke fan van het zwarte goedje, toch was ik meteen verknocht aan het chique Nespresso. De koffie waarvoor George Clooney tot gewetens toe een deal met God heeft moeten maken. En in de keuken die Ijsbreker met IcePackaging Africa deelt, staat z’n blits model dat de koffie uitschenkt.

Hoedanook, daar zit ik dan. Aan mijn bureautje, als eerste van de drie, en stiekem aan het bedenken hoe ik mijn dag zal vul-len. De pocket note heeft alleen

nog wat schoonheidsvlekjes die weggewerkt moeten worden. ‘Gelukkig’ zorgt de printer voor de nodige vertraging. Zo zijn printers nu eenmaal.

Zonnig middaguurtje Het is een zonnige dag en tegen de middag loopt het kantoor leeg. Ik vraag Wolf tijdens het in vorm snijden van de inmiddels afgedrukte booklet of hij niet nog een taakje voor me in petto heeft. Maar de gong die het einde van de stageperiode aankondigde, was in feite al beslaan. Wolf nam me op dat zonnige middaguurtje in vertrouwen. Of ik mijn volgende stage niet opnieuw bij hen wilde doen? Graag, maar is daar dan ook eventueel een vacature aan verbonden?

13Momenteel is het bedrijf Ijsbreker voltallig, maar ik kan misschien wel tijdelijke opdrachten aan. Later ontvang ik van Herman een mail waarin hij me vertelt dat er wel een verhaal te vertellen is waarin ik een rol kan meespelen. Ik heb mijn pen en inspiratie alvast achter de hand.

Creatieve eiIjsbreker vindt dat ik al tamelijk ver sta in het creatieve proces, al moet er nog gesleuteld worden aan de technische kant. Daar ben ik me van bewust. Wat betreft het invullen van content en het leggen van (internationale) contacten, vind ik van mezelf dat ik ook niet slecht presteerde. En natuurlijk zal ik mijn nieuwe connecties onderhouden. Ijsbreker buigt

zich dan alleen nog over de vraag of ik wel voldoende mijn ei kwijt kan bij minder creatieve opdrachten. Taken die bij de grotere klanten reeds vastliggen. Ik heb het mezelf ook al afge-vraagd, maar zulke opdrachten horen er nu eenmaal bij en ik zal deze dan ook met plezier voltooien.

Het is nu wachten tot begin sep-tember. Ik ben benieuwd welke taken er mij dan voor Ijsbreker te wachten staan.

It is the main goal of the festival to finance 7 to 15 solar well pumps for M’hamid el Ghizlane, the capital city of the Aarib Tuareg. But there are many other local projects to support.

Because of the draught in the mid fifties, a lot of Tuareg – nomads of the Sahara desert - settled down in this village in an area that displays resemblance with the Wild West. The current installations are not sufficient for the people living in this area. So there is an urgent need for new wells, to provide enough water for living here, as well as to provide new jobs as ‘well-keepers,’ people who keep

the well in a good condition.

Basile Marrero is the president of the Association Alchemy. For this festival, he works with the Moroccan government, which have a great share in the reali-zation of the festival.

Marrero visited the town of M’Hamid for many times over the last 4 years and he has built a relation of trust with the Tuareg.
