“beautiful works spark the urgent need to approach, the same pressing feeling that they have more to offer, the same burning desire to understand what that is...” -Alexander Nehamas

Project:

Objective: Explore the use of technology and different design programs to express architectural ideas and represent an existing building. Site: Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center (CAFAC), 3749 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, MNArchitect: Joseph E. Nason (1915)

Program Diagram: We represented in our program diagrams an abstraction of their mission as well as how well suited the space is for their mul-titude of purposes.

CAFAC teaches and uses a multitude of different fire arts ranging from enameling, glass work, welding, grinding, smithing and soon to be more. The way they keep all of these different activities running in a relatively small space for the amount of programming involved is via a cart sys-tem, keeping each different activity’s relat-ed tools on a cart or several and pull out what they need when they need it and are able to arrange the space in any configura-tion that suits that day’s schedule.

Conceptual Diagram: Our first attempt abstractly conveyed a sectional quality of how the building has been added to and subtracted from over the variety of usages the space went through. We selectively used the color red in a variety of cone or A style formations to speak to the large metal A currently residing in the parking lot as well as the cones from the spotlights on the railings that speak to a previous incar-nation of the space as a theater.

From there we reconsidered what was interesting and im-portant about the building, and we came to the conclusion that the static nature of the facade and the different programs it has housed is intriguing. The differ-ing uses of the space have been “plugged in” to the structure and facade that has stayed rela-tively the same since 1915 with only slight alterations.

To the right you can see the physical models we made to rep-resent the used space and the unused. The lighter color repre-senting the used and the darker the unused.

1990s- Wreck Brothers Autobody

200-2005 Vacant

2008- CAFAC

Conclusions: The building’s large open structure has allowed it to have many reincarnations, through it’s history thus far arts and industry have been attracted to the space because of it’s malleability and openness. Many of the incarnations can’t produce or provide what they did without the scale of the building. Many of the later functions were attracted to the toughness or rough quality of the structure. Further interesting inquiries would include a neighborhood map seeking connections to the building’s scope. The building’s WWW have always been somewhat of destination “spots”. How far would people be willing to travel to the building throughout history?
