Refurbishment of a G.D.R. exhibition center into accomodation for 500 refugees.Leipzig, Germany. 2017
Exhibition Hall. Original Section(1988)
Federal Institut for Building, Urban and Spatial Researches
In the wake of the war in Syria, the German government offered
shelter to asylum seekers in Europe and proposed several
buildings towards the accommodation of the large number of
refugees. The old G.D.R. exhibition complex Messehalle 13 in
Leipzig was one of them.
Originally, the building was divided in two parts:
steel frame, concrete, glass and prefabricated components;
typical pre-cast concrete components system of new
architecture in the G.D.R, also known as Plattenbausystem.
exhibition complex, into accommodation for 500 people,
including shared kitchens and offices for administration,
security, medical and social services.
Upstream of this, the project involved a comprehensive study
of the constructive heritage of years of socialism, documented
(Federal Institute for building, urbanism and spatial researchs),
in order to work with its specific components without damages.
Dissemination of inside plans and pictures are not allowed.
