Ultrasonic phased array technology has been used for ultrasonic diagnosis in Medical fields since the early 1970’s. In case of industrial NDT using ultrasonic phased array technology has been used since the early 1990's.

Phased array technology allows the generation of an ultrasonic beam with the possible of setting the beam parameters such as angle, focal distance, and focal point size through software and hardware. A single array probe can be controlled electronically to generate ultrasonic beams of many different angles and to focus at many different points on the inspected component. This capability opens possibilities for achieving improved examination coverage, accuracy and for reducing examination time.

AcouLab IPAS-128, portable phased array system is allowed that each piezoelectric element of a probe can be individually controlled electronically. It is possible to generate acoustic beams that can be guided and focused at many angles and depths in the inspected component, called electronic beam steering, electronic focusing and electronic scanning.

To generate a beam for beam steering and focusing, various probe elements are pulsed at slightly different times. By precisely controlling the delays between the probe elements, beams of various angles, focal distances, and focal spot size can be produced, it’s called “focal law”. The superposition of the each ultrasonic wave from individual element forms a new wave front. Therefore, ultrasonic beam is steered and focused at desired point without acoustic lens and angled wedges

Electronic beam focusing

The echo from the desired focal point hits the various transducer elements with a computable time shift. The signals received at each transducer element are time-shifted before being summed up together. The resulting sum is an A-Scan that emphasizes the response from the desired focal point and attenuates various other echoes from other points in the material.

One phased array probe can focus at many different depths, allowing faster and more reliable inspection of thick components with dynamic focus. When the accessible area is enough to contact the linear array transducer, linear scan can be used to inspect flat surface such as steel plates. When the transducer contact area on the surface of the test specimen is limited, sectorial scan be used to make the large sectorial shape real time B-scan image of the inside of specimen.
