Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat play)

You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, INTRO PGM, single, shuffle and RMS play modes.

During playback, press REPEAT/ENTER.

Note on ./>During Repeat play, you can locate the first track after the last track by pressing > repeatedly.You can also locate the last track after first track by pressing . repeatedly.

Selecting tracks by listening to songs’ intro(INTRO PGM play)

You can program the CD player to play only the tracks you like listening to while theCD player plays the beginning of every track (song’s intro) one by one.

1 During playback, press PLAY MODErepeatedly until “INTRO PGM”appears.

2 Press u.The CD player starts playing the first 15 seconds of every track. “INTRO PGM” flashesfaster.

3 Press REPEAT/ENTER during a song’s intro when you want to select thetrack.To skip the track, press >.When all tracks on the CD are played, “INTRO PGM” stops flashing and the CD playerstarts playing the tracks you selected.To finish selecting tracks before all tracks are played, press u.

Playing a single track (Single play)

During playback, press PLAY MODErepeatedly until “1” appears.

Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle play)

Playing tracks in your favorite order (RMS play)

You can program the CD player to play up to 22 tracks in your favorite order.

1 During playback, press PLAY MODErepeatedly until “RMS” appears.

2 Press . or > to select a track.

3 Press REPEAT/ENTER to enterthe selected track.“00” appears.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 to select the tracks in your favorite order.

5 Press u to start the RMS play.

To check the programDuring programming:

Press REPEAT/ENTER repeatedly before step 5.During the RMS play:

Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “RMS” flashes, then press REPEAT/ENTER.Each time you press REPEAT/ENTER, the track number appears.

Notes• When you finish entering the 22nd track in step 3, the first selected track appears in the display.• If you select more than 22 tracks, the first selected tracks are erased.

Turning on the shockprotection function (ESP2)

The ESP2* function prevents the sound fromskipping when you make a jolt or bump toyour CD player. This function is useful whenusing your CD player in a car or other mobileapplication.

Press ESP to display “ESP.”

To turn off the ESP 2 functionPress ESP again.

* The ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) functionprevents the sound from skipping by using amemory buffer that can store music data. TheESP2 (ESP Squared) system can store more musicdata than ESP, and enables a higher level of shockprotection to reduce sound skipping.

Notes• The CD play may stop if the CD player receives a

strong shock.• Noise may be heard or sound may be skipped if:

– a dirty or scratched CD is played– an audio test CD that contains certain special

signals is played– the CD player receives a continuous shock

• Sound may be intermitted for a while when youpress the ESP button during play.

Emphasizing the basssound (SOUND)

You can emphasize the bass-boosted sound.

Press SOUND to select “MB (MegaBass)” or “GRV (Groove).”

GRV enhances the bass sound more thanMB.

NoteIf the sound is distorted when using the SOUNDfunction, turn down the volume.

Locking the controls(HOLD)

You can lock the controls on your CD playerto prevent accidental button presses.

Slide HOLD in the direction of thearrow.

To unlock the controlsSlide HOLD in the opposite direction of thearrow.

Protecting your hearing(AVLS)

The AVLS (Automatic Volume LimiterSystem) function keeps down the maximumvolume to protect your hearing.

Set AVLS to “LIMIT.”

If you turn up the volume to “ * ”“AVLS” flashes and you cannot turn up thevolume any more. When you want to turn upthe volume to more than “ *,” set AVLSto “NORM.”* For the customers in France

NoteIf the sound is distorted when you simultaneouslyuse the SOUND and AVLS functions, turn downthe volume.

Resuming the playback(Resume play)

Your CD player can recall the playback pointwhere you stopped and resume playing fromthe same place.

Set RESUME to “ON.”

To cancel resume playSet RESUME to “OFF.”

Notes• Resume play is canceled if you open the CD

player lid (even if the RESUME switch is set to“ON”).

• The playback point may result an error rate byapproximately +/– 30 seconds.

Turning off theoperation beep soundYou can turn off the beep sound that is heardfrom your headphones/earphones when youoperate your CD player.

1 Remove the power source (ACpower adaptor, rechargeablebatteries or dry batteries) from theCD player.

2 Connect the power source whilepressing x•CHG on the CD player.

To turn on the beep soundRemove the power source and then connectthe power source without pressing x•CHG.

Connecting a stereosystemYou can listen to CDs through a stereosystem and record CDs on a cassette tape.For details, see the instruction manual thatcomes with the connected device.

Be sure to turn off all connected devicesbefore making connections.

Notes• Before you play a CD, turn down the volume of

the connected device to avoid damaging theconnected speakers.

• Use the AC power adaptor for recording. If youuse the rechargeable batteries or dry batteries as apower source, batteries may become completelydepleted during recording.

• Adjust the volume properly so that the sound willnot be distorted.

When using the connecting cord• When you record a CD on a cassette tape

using a cassette recorder that has the blanksearch function, turn off the ESP2 function.If the ESP2 function is set to on, the blanksearch function does not work.

• If the sound is distorted when using theSOUND function, press SOUNDrepeatedly until the sound indicationdisappears from the display.

Using your CD player ina carYou can use your CD player in a car byconnecting it to the car cassette deck.

You cannot use the car mount plate for thisCD player.

When you use your CD player in a car,install it securely in a location that does notinterfere with your driving.

Optional car accessory neededTo connect your CD player to a car cassettedeck, you need the following car accessoriesin “Accessories (supplied/optional)”:• Car battery cord, and• Car connecting pack*For details, see the instruction manuals thatcome with the optional accessories.

* Noise may be heard if you use an optionalconnecting cord. It is recommended that you usea Sony car connecting pack to reduce noise.

Switched ignition function (whenusing the car battery cord)With this feature, your CD player stopsautomatically when you turn off the carengine (turn off the ignition key) even if thebatteries are inserted in the CD player. Thisfunction is invalid depending on the carmodels.

NoteUse only the car battery cord listed in “Accessories(supplied/optional).” If you use any other carbattery cord, a heat, smoke or malfunction mayoccur.

Using the rechargeablebatteriesCharge the rechargeable batteries beforeusing them for the first time. You can useonly the following rechargeable batteries foryour CD player.• NC-AA• NH-MDAA

1 Open the battery compartmentinside your CD player.

2 Insert two rechargeable batteriesby matching the + to the diagraminside the battery compartmentand close the lid.

3 Connect the AC power adaptor tothe DC IN 4.5 V jack of your CDplayer and an AC outlet, thenpress x•CHG to charge.If the AC power adaptor does not fit theAC outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.

The CD player charges the batteries.When the batteries are completelycharged, the indicator turns off. Ifyou press x•CHG when the charge hasalready been completed, the indicator flashes.

Using the rechargeable batteries

To remove the rechargeable batteriesRemove the batteries as illustrated below.

When to charge the rechargeablebatteriesWhen the batteries become weak, “Lo” andthe indicator appear in the display.To keep the original battery capacity for along time, charge the batteries only whenthey are completely depleted.

When to replace the rechargeablebatteriesIf the battery life becomes shorter by abouthalf, replace the batteries with newrechargeable batteries.

Note on the rechargeable batteriesIf the battery is new or has not been used fora long time, it may not be chargedcompletely until you charge and discharge itseveral times.

To attach the battery compartment lidIf the battery compartment lid is detached byan accidental drop, excessive force, etc.,attach it as illustrated below.

Using dry batteriesUse only the following dry battery type foryour CD player:• LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries

NoteBe sure to remove the AC power adaptor whenusing the dry batteries.

1 Open the battery compartmentinside your CD player.

2 Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkalinebatteries by matching the + to thediagram inside the batterycompartment and close the lid.

Notes on the powersourceDisconnect all power sources when the CDplayer is not used.

On AC power adaptor• Use only the AC power adaptor supplied or

recommended in “Accessories (supplied/optional).” Do not use any other AC poweradaptor. It may cause a malfunction.

Polarity of the plug

• When disconnecting the AC power adaptorfrom the AC outlet, grasp the adaptoritself. Do not pull it by the cord.

• Do not touch the AC power adaptor withwet hands.

On rechargeable batteriesand dry batteries• Do not charge the dry batteries.• Do not throw the batteries into fire.• Do not carry the batteries with coins or

other metallic objects. It can generate heatif the positive and negative terminals of thebattery are accidentally contacted by ametallic object.

• Do not mix rechargeable batteries with drybatteries.

• Do not mix new batteries with old ones.• Do not use different types of batteries

together.• When the batteries are not to be used for a

long time, remove them.• If battery leakage occurs, wipe off any

deposit in the battery compartment, andinstall new batteries. In case the depositadheres to you, wash it off thoroughly.

PrecautionsOn safety• Should any solid objects or liquid fall into

the CD player, unplug it and have itchecked by qualified personnel beforeoperating it any further.

• Do not put any foreign objects in the DCIN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.

On the CD player• Keep the lens on the CD player clean and

do not touch it. If you do so, the lens maybe damaged and the CD player will notoperate properly.

• Do not put any heavy object on top of theCD player. The CD player and the CD maybe damaged.

• Do not leave the CD player in a locationnear heat sources, or in a place subject todirect sunlight, excessive dust or sand,moisture, rain, mechanical shock,unleveled surface, or in a car with itswindows closed.

• If the CD player causes interference to theradio or television reception, turn off theCD player or move it away from the radioor television.

On handling CDs• To keep the CD clean, handle it by its

edge. Do not touch the surface.• Do not stick paper or tape onto the CD.

• Do not expose the CD to direct sunlight orheat sources such as hot air ducts. Do notleave the CD in a car parked under directsunlight.

On headphones/earphonesRoad safetyDo not use headphones/earphones whiledriving, cycling, or operating any motorizedvehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and isillegal in some areas. It can also bepotentially dangerous to play your headsetsat high volume while walking, especially atpedestrian crossings. You should exerciseextreme caution or discontinue use inpotentially hazardous situations.

Preventing hearing damageAvoid using headphones/earphones at highvolume. Hearing experts advise againstcontinuous, loud and extended play. If youexperience a ringing in your ears, reducevolume or discontinue use.

Consideration for othersKeep the volume at a moderate level. Thiswill allow you to hear outside sounds and tobe considerate to the people around you.

MaintenanceTo clean the casingUse a soft cloth slightly moistened in wateror a mild detergent solution. Do not usealcohol, benzine or thinner.
