The key is knowing what efforts are worth it, and which ones backfire.1. EXPECTING THE WORSTTeenagers get a bad rap. Many parents approach raising teenagers as an ordeal, believing they can only watch helplessly as their lovable children transform into unpredictable monsters. But that sets you – and your teen – up for several unhappy, unsatisfying years together. The message we give teenagers is that they’re only ‘good’ if they’re not doing ‘bad’ things – such as doing drugs, hanging around with the wrong crowd, or having sex. Instead focus on your child’s interests and hobbies, even if you don’t under-stand them. You could open a new path of communication, reconnect with the child you love, and learn something new.

2. READING TOO MANY PARENTING BOOKSRather than trusting their instincts, many parents turn to outside experts for advice on how to raise teens. Parents can tie themselves into knots trying to follow the advice they read in books. It’s not that parenting books are bad. But rather use books to get perspective on confusing behavior, and then put the book down and trust that you’ve learned what you need to learn. Get clear about what matters most to you and your family.

3. SWEATING THE SMALL STUFFMaybe you don’t like your tween daughter’s haircut or choice of clothes. Or perhaps she didn’t get the part in the play you know she deserves. But before you step in, look at the big picture. Challenge yourself to step back and let your child know you’re there for them.

4. IGNORING THE BIG STUFFIf you suspect your child is using alcohol or drugs, do

not look the other way. Even if it’s “just” alcohol – or even if it reminds you of your own youth

– you must take action now, before it becomes a bigger problem.

Watch for unexplained changes in your teen’s behavior, appearance, academic

performance, and friends. And remember, it’s not just illicit

drugs that are abused now – prescription drugs and even

cough medicines and household products

are also in the mix.Take these signs seriously

and get involved. Safeguard all the medicines you have. Know

which products are in your home and how much medication is in each package

or bottle.

5. TOO MUCH – OR TOO LITTLE – DISCIPLINE

Some parents, sensing a loss of control over their teens’ behavior, crack down every time their child steps out of line. Others avoid all conflict for fear their teens will push them away. You don’t have to do either of those things. It’s about finding a balance between obedience and freedom.

As their parent, it’s up to you to set your family’s core values and communicate them through your words and actions. That’s being an authoritative parent, an approach that helps children develop the skills they need to govern themselves in appropriate ways.

Remember, your influence runs deeper than you may think. Most teens say they want to spend more time with their parents. Keep making time for your child throughout the tween and teen years. Even when it doesn’t show, you provide the solid ground they know they can always come home to.

Your child isn’t a little kid anymore. He or she is a teen, or a tween – and it’s time to tweak your parenting skills to keep up with them. Yes, they’re probably moodier now than when they were young. And you have

new things to think about, like curfews, dating, new drivers, and friends who make you raise your eyebrows. No doubt about it: Your teen, or tween, will test your limits, and your patience. But they’re still

your child. And, though they won’t admit it, they still need you …

We have the largest selection of quality pork, beef and lamb sourced from the best possible supply.

We stock AAA grade Sparta rump, sirloin and fillet steak as well as lamb

from the Western Cape and Karoo regions.

WHAT YOU NEED:• 3 grapefruits• 2 tbls brown sugar (approx)

WHAT TO DO:• Set the oven to grill and place a

rack in the middle shelf.

• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling. If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments.• Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up, and sprinkle each half with approximately 1 tsp

of brown sugar to taste.• Grill for about 10-15 minutes until flecked and speckled.Serve plain or with yoghurt.

GRILLED GRAPE FRUITSAt the very tail-end of winter the grape fruit is in full swing.

I started serving these zesty and yet slightly warming delicacies on cooler spring retreat mornings. There is something intrinsically cheerful about the smell of grapefruits that make them a welcome

addition to a breakfast spread. Select ruby grapefruits for their vibrant colour and richer antioxidant content and use a grapefruit knife to cut into segments before grilling for easier eating.

The sprinkle of brown sugar will melt into the grapefruit as it caramelizes, softening the bitterness and giving the surface a perfectly radiant glow. A joyous and juicy way to begin the day.

9 Simple Kitchen Tips You Wish Someone Told You Earlier

1. Use tongs to cooking pretty much everything.2. Store everything in tupperware.3. If you own a knife, don’t use a garlic press.4. Keep a separate cutting board for things you don’t want flavored with garlic and onion.5. Herbs that are supposed to be green should be purchased

fresh, not dry.6. Don’t bother with pre-filled spice racks.7. Overcooking is probably your biggest kitchen mistake.8. If it tastes OK but not great, it probably needs salt—and maybe some vinegar or olive oil.9. Fruit (other than berries) shouldn’t be stored in the fridge.

FOR FRESH, HEALTHY & CONVENIENT SHOPPING

24 HOURS A DAY.

Sometimes life throws you some old tiles and then you have two options: live with it, or paint and stamp it! Save yourself a heap of cash by opting for this very

clever stamp that can be used in any number of ways.

By: Germarie Bruwer and Margaux Tait from Homeology.co.za

My kitchen had been in desperate need of a tiled splash-back because unlike most old homes, I wasn’t blessed with horrid old kitchen tiles.

1.Cut 16 mm chip board to the size you want your panel to be, minus 2.5 mm on all 4 sides. This will ensure that the tiles hang over the wood a little bit to create a nice shadow line.

2. Fix 2 mirror fixings to the back — it’s easier to do this first otherwise you risk breaking a tile or two.

3. The stamp size is 150 mm x150mm so I used some very inex-pensive white tiles to the same size. Fix the tiles to the panel using

a tile adhesive, leaving a 2 mm space between them.

4. Use grout to fill in the spaces and let it dry for a couple of hours.

5. Prime the tiles with a standard tile primer — there are many brands on the market — and then let it cure for 24 hours.

6. Then STAMP

7. After the pattern had dried for a couple of hours, you’ll need to seal it with a craft sealer like Harlequin Paint’s Decorator’s Varnish. It’s a clear coat that will ensure that you can wipe down the tiles when they get wet or dirty.

Theodor Herzl Pre-Primary

A unique sound garden and challenging, interactive climbing frame are the latest additions to Theodor Herzl Pre-Primary School’s exceptional playground, designed to stimulate curiosity and creativity in the ‘Theodorable’ children of this thriving Walmer school. Principal Buffy Allanson said the carefully planned and custom made climbing frame addressed “whole child development through design, technology, critical thinking and problem solving skills.

“A marble run, bucket and pulley systems, climbing walls, ball chutes and maze walls are just some of the fabulous fun activities possible within this predominantly wood system. Differentiated degrees of difficulty provide for developmentally appropriate challenges and the benefits of co-operative learning. “Our sound garden is to be found under the shade of a tree, within a natural amphitheatre. It is comprised of various rustic musical instruments and

sound making equipment: drumming barrels, a drumming wall, suspended vertical sound pipes, horizontal wooden xylophones and chimes. This unique musical experience allows our children to develop creative, spontaneous rhythm and to explore the wonderful world of music and sound, either individually or as a band!” Theodor Herzl Pre-Primary offers a warm, nurturing environment maintained by professional staff who are not only highly qualified ECD practitioners, but are passionate and committed to fulfilling the unique and individual needs and potential of every child. “We pride ourselves on fostering emotional intelligence, independence

and co-operative group interaction,” Buffy said. “Universal beliefs, values and attitudes are vital life skills that we instil in our children, of all cultures and backgrounds. Our programme is designed to awaken the desire to learn by stimulating curiosity and creativity with positive, multi-sensory experiences so that learning is joyful and meaningful.

Applications are still open for Grade 000 (children who are 3 years old and potty trained) in 2015 and for Grades 00 and 0 in 2016.

Wheelchair makes resident happyMr Ben Erasmus was a healthy young fireman when he was attached and stabbed in his back in 1976. This incident led to his being disabled and he was placed in Cheshire Homes, where he’s been living since.

Pearson High School’s Interact Club brought a smile to his face on Friday, 8 August 2014 when they presented him with a motorised wheelchair to replace his dilapidated manual wheelchair. This was handed over to him by Leah Brink, outgoing president of the school’s Interact Club. In a moving moment, Mr Erasmus thanked the school for giving him more freedom of movement. Pearson vs Westering Derby ReportPearson finished the 2014 Winter Sporting Season on a high note as they dominated their traditional end-of –season annual Derby against Westering in Summerstrand over the weekend.

With the hockey matches starting on Friday, it was evident that Pearson was up for the challenge to end the season on a high note.

The 1st Girls’ Hockey team was the first of the 1st teams to take the field. The Pearson team, ended off the season unbeaten in the local schools’ league and ranked 5th in the country according to S.A. Sporting web sites.

The second half was a one-sided match with the Pearson girls giving a good display of a well-structured hockey. The match ended with Pearson winning 7-0. Caitlin Gouws was once again on top form creating the goals for the Pearson strikers. Lindsay Biggs, Luzaan Potgieter and Anja Van Eerden who are the matrics in the team, ended off playing very well to help their team to their victory.

The last match of the night saw the Pearson 1st Boys’ Hockey team taking the field. Both teams got off to a slow start as the game went end to end with nothing of substance materializing.

It wasn’t until a quarter of the way through the game when the Pearson 1st XI Captain Tinus Loots converted from a Penalty corner to make the score to 1-0 in favour of the hosts.

The game ended in a thrilling finish as the crowd counted down as time ran out handing Pearson a well-deserved 1-0 victory. The Pearson defence, had an outstanding game.

On Saturday the 1st Netball match was delayed due to rain and only the U/19 matches were played on the day. The Under

19A match proved to be a very comfortable 35-08 victory for Pearson. The match proved to be a fitting finale to a fine season with the Pearson team winning 27 out of 32 games played.

The final match of the day saw the 1st Rugby teams clash on a cold and windy afternoon. The Pearson 1st XV completed the clean sweep of victories against Westering High school in all the matches played over the two days. What started off as a scrappy encounter turned into a spectacle of running rugby with the home side running in 11 tries.

The second half was a one sided affair with the Pearson forwards dominating the breakdown and ensuring quick ball for their exciting young backline. An unanswered eight tries was scored in the second half but only 3 could be converted to bring the final score to 64-10 in favour of Pearson.

Sport Festival DaySaturday 16 August marks the highlight on the Linkside sporting calendar, when 20 schools, and more than 1000 learners will be participating in a multi-coded Sport Festival Day at Linkside High from 08:00 to about 16:00. The schools include quite a number of out-of-town schools, as well as local PE ex-model C and private schools, and township and Northern area schools. In the past couple of years, this Festival of sport, to mark the end of season for the winter sports, has grown from humble beginnings, to where we are now, more than a 1000 participants. The reasons behind the Festival is to celebrate the friendships built through sport, and the character building that sport can effect in one’s life, if played for the right reasons and in the right spirit.

Daar is reeds meer as 15 000 ingesamel.
