Whatever the crisis – the climate, the economy orfinance – the current crises show that society, politics and the economy have to rise to meet thesedifficult challenges. Adequate reactions are re-quired, whether they affect the economy, politics or technology.

The slump in the world economy did not spare Porsche AG either. Since important export marketshave not yet recovered their old strength, Porsche’sproduction over the past fiscal year had to be ad-justed in line with the drop in demand. In Septem-ber 2009 short time was introduced for a limited number of working days at the Zuffenhausen plant.

But we even strive to achieve progress in times of crisis. It was just in February 2010 when Michael Macht, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, said in connection with the installa-tion of the cutting-edge photovoltaic plant at the Porsche Facility in Sachsenheim that, “Forward-looking environmental protection and the con-servation of resources takes priority at Porsche and not only in production”. In order to permanently secure the future of the corporation, Porsche is committed to integrated environmental protection which evaluates in advancethe impact Porsche’s production processes and products have on the environment and takes this into consideration.

Improving environment performance was and still is the main aim which our Environmental Manage-ment System is always designed to achieve. At itsfacility in Zuffenhausen, Porsche already undertook a voluntary commitment to validate the Environmen-tal Management in accordance with EMAS in 1996.Since 1999 the requirements of the internationalstandard ISO 14001 are also being implemented. At the monitoring audit conducted in accordance withEMAS and ISO 14001 in June 2010, the efficiency of the Environmental Management System was again verified and confirmed. And Porsche AG is also facing up to the requirements of the new EMAS III by providing the specific core indicators togetherwith stipulated reference parameters.

This Updated Environmental Statement 2010 provides information on the on-going process ofimproving environmental protection and on currentenvironmental activities and also presents the de-velopment of environmental performance at the pro-duction facility in Zuffenhausen during the periodunder review. The Environmental Statement aims to focus employees’ awareness with respect to environmental protection at the workplace and tosimultaneously present the environmental perfor-mance of Porsche AG.

We want to use resources sparingly and keep harmful environmental impact as low as possible.

We develop products and manufacturing processes that are as environmentally friendly as possible, and we constantly strive to assess their environmental impact in advance.

The long service life of our products is an essential component of the Porsche concept. This enables us to actively save on resources and power.

It goes without saying that Porsche meets all applicable environmental regulations. The continuous improvement of environmental protection at the workplace has a high priority.

We will inform the public regularly concerning environment-related procedures in the company, and we are committed to an open and trusting dialogue with the authorities and relevant organizations.

The Principles of Porsche’s Environmental Policy

General social and ecological conditions and thestrain on the environment caused by population andproduction growth require a new sense of purpose for enterprising thought and action. The impact of all operational activities and manufactured products on our life-sustaining resources and environmentmust be taken into account as a whole and factoredinto business activities.

It is the stated goal of Porsche AG to ensure that all of its activities have as minimal an impact on the environment as possible and, furthermore, to support international efforts to solve global envi-ronmental protection problems.

In the world of the automobile the name of the location of the headquarters of what is today Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has a specialring to it: Zuffenhausen. To Porsche AG, Zuffen-hausen is far more than just a production locationsteeped in tradition, for this is where the heart of the corporation beats. Porsche’s headquarters have been located here for over 70 years and since1950 more than one million Porsche sports cars have been produced in Stuttgart.

Responsible behavior and economic success go hand in hand at Porsche AG. The production of sportscars in a plant to the north west of Stuttgart that isadjacent to a general residential area demands morethan simply complying with laws and regulations. We conduct an open dialog with our neighbors. At Porsche the sustainable use of environmentally-friendly plant technology goes without saying. Andkeeping our staff well informed and trained on theenvironmental impact of their activities is a key element in this.

Based on the specifications of the revised EC Re-gulation No 1221/2009 (EMAS III) and ISO 14001, environmental protection at the workplace is con-sidered to be an integrated system of interlockingmeasures.

Plant which requires a license is operated at the Zuffenhausen Facility. This is coordinated via a func-tioning licensing management system that forms part of the Environmental Management System andensures that the necessary environmental licens-ing is granted that is then implemented by the re-sponsible operator. In general terms, the Environmental ManagementSystem contains the elements for guaranteeing le-gal compliance such as the organizational structure and operations structuring, stipulating responsibil-ities and the directory of legislation in force showing the statutes, ordinances and regulations applying to the Zuffenhausen Facility. Internal environmentalaudits are conducted every year to monitor legal compliance at the Zuffenhausen Facility.

Production Processes at the Zuffenhausen FacilityDescription of the Zuffenhausen Facility (as per 12/2009)

Workforce: 4,818 Employees

Area of the Plant: The Zuffenhausen Facility is located at the north-western border of Stuttgart and covers a built-up area of approximately 287,880 square meters.

Production and other Departmentsat the Zuffenhausen Facility: > Production areas: Body shell, paint shop,

engine assembly, car assembly and upholstery> Component production in the fields of body shell,

engine assembly and upholstery> Production of spare parts in mechanical

production and engine assembly> Central logistics, company cafeteria,

training department, energy supply, waste provision

Vehicles produced at the Zuffenhausen Facility in 2009:> 25,589 vehicles > 57,800 engines

Environmental Management: Environmental Management at the Zuffenhausen Facility has been validated in accordance with therequirements of Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 of 25. 11. 2009 and certified in accordance with ISO 14001.

The description of the facility in the consolidated Environmental Statement largely reflects the current situation. Discrepancies relate to the reorganization of mechanical production from series production to spare part production and to the central warehousefor spare parts at the Sachsenheim Facility which was included in the Environmental ManagementSystem of the Zuffenhausen Facility up until mid2009. After being restructured and relocated in thesubsidiary PLoG, the Environmental ManagementSystem was adjusted accordingly and the Sach-senheim Facility itself has been certified in accord-ance with ISO 14001.

Paint shop: New building for the paint shopWith the construction of one of the most modernand environmentally-friendly paint shops in theworld, Porsche AG is continuing to expand its innovative automotive production at its main plant in Zuffenhausen. The new paint shop, which is to be put into operation in 2011, is being built im-mediately adjacent to plants 1 and 5, on a site which used to belong to Dürr AG. The shell of thenew production building was completed at the Zuffenhausen Facility after a construction periodthat only took six and a half months.

At the topping out ceremony, Baden-Württemberg’sMinister of the Environment Tanja Gönner and Stuttgart’s Lord Mayor Dr. Wolfgang Schuster wereable not only to inspect the building but also tobecome acquainted for the first time with the highlyinnovative technology which will be implementedhere as from 2011. The paint shop will be operating two shifts for the911 series and the Boxster. State of the art technol-ogies will be applied in the new building, especiallyas far as environmental protection is concerned. Thanks to one hundred percent encapsulation, thepainting process will be thoroughly dust protected.A novel electrostatic separator system for paintmist reduces emissions of solvents and particulatematter to a minimum. This will be the first time that a paint shop is being built without a 60 meterhigh chimney for exhaust air. The reason for this lies in the higher proportion of re-circulating air inthe cabin and a highly efficient exhaust air purifica-tion plant only requiring a narrow chimney rising ten meters above the roof. Moreover, an especially efficient new Energy Management System will alsohave a protective effect on the environment.

Assemblies: Spare part production in mechanical productionAt the end of 2008 serial production of engine partswas discontinued in mechanical production andchanged to spare part production of the engine ver-sions. During 2009, the period under review, 18 pro-cessing centers were duly cleaned and disassem-bled by a specialist company. Prior to disassemblythe VAwS (Ordinance for Installations Handling Water Pollutants) decommissioning tests were conductedby an expert. Now mechanical production specifically concen-trates on manufacturing crankcases, cylinder heads, piston rods, bearing brackets and bucket tappet housings for spare parts requirements. The consoli-dation phase of the spare part production has beencompleted and the processes have been run in andstabilized. As a result of the restructuring of the production area, potential dangers to the environ-ment and environmental impacts have been con-siderably reduced.

Construction: Reconstruction and expansion of the centralpower station in Plant 2 building 46The demand for heat has increased during the course of further development in Zuffenhausen andthrough the planned operation of the new paint shop. Expanding the capacity of the existing powerstation at the Zuffenhausen Facility was planned andapproved. In addition to an increase in the overallthermal output, a combined block heat and powerplant will supply the production facility with heat infuture. In this connection Porsche is focusing on aparticularly environmentally-friendly and efficientmethod of energy generation. Electricity is generat-ed by a gas-fired engine and the exhaust heat fromthe engine is fed into the existing heating system, thus thermally producing two megawatts. In addition, emphasis is consciously placed on needs-basedsequential switching of the boiler so as to produce as little heat loss through downtimes as possible.Commissioning is planned for 2010.

Porsche Resource and Energy Management (PREM)For several years now action has been taken to reduce consumption and save resources within thescope of the well-functioning, existing Environmen-tal Management System. This year these endeavorshave been addressed in an even more sustainablemanner through the introduction of the concept of“Porsche Resource and Energy Management” orPREM. Organizational and technical measures arebeing taken throughout the entire Facility in orderto establish potential savings and reduce consump-tion of resources and energy. This is why additional meters for electricity, water, heat, refrigerants, gas and compressed air wereinstalled in a pilot project in the current paint shop to monitor consumption of energy and resources ingreater detail and to continuously evaluate this consumption. The findings made were taken intoaccount when planning the new paint shop.

Energy Management in accordance with EN 16001EN 16001 became effective on 1 August 2009. This new standard describes the demands placed on an Energy Management System (EnMS) en-abling a systematic evaluation of energy consump-tion whilst adhering to legal requirements. This makes it possible for the company’s energy efficiencyto be continually improved. The standard is largelybased on the requirements of ISO 14001 which again forms a fundamental component of the EMASRegulation. At Porsche AG, the Energy Management System inaccordance with EN 16001 has been integrated into the Environmental Management System in ac-cordance with ISO 14001. Elements of the EnMSsuch as energy policy, energy targets, organization, training, operational control, control and correctiveprocesses, the audit system and managementassessment have already been implemented by the existing Environmental Management System. The “Porsche Resource and Energy Management”concept is a fundamental component thereof. The first certification in accordance with EN 16001was effected during the course of the monitoringaudit pursuant to EMAS/ ISO 14001.

Risk Prevention Organization: Storm damage at the Zuffenhausen FacilityThe severe storm at the beginning of July 2009 af-fected several parts of the plant in the ZuffenhausenFacility and caused enormous flooding damage inproduction. Over three million liters of water had tobe pumped out of the basement of the new engineplant alone. This was caused by overflowing in themunicipal sewer system. In compliance with the stipulations of the Risk Prevention Organization, anemergency committee was set up at Porsche to coordinate the emergency staff. Thanks to the fastand highly-professional help of both internal andexternal emergency personnel it was possible to prevent a worse outcome. There was no damage to the environment.

Environmental protection at the workplace: Shutting down VAwS installationsDuring the 2009 reporting period, process changesand optimizations at the Zuffenhausen Facility meantthat a total of 20 VAwS installations (installationshandling water pollutants) were professionally shutdown. This enabled the potential risk to the environ-ment to be reduced considerably. 53 VAwS installa-tions that are subject to first or recurrent testing are still in operation at the Zuffenhausen Facility atthe current time.

Environmental protection at the workplace:Regulation on Electronic DocumentationWith effect from April 2010, the Regulation on Electronic Documentation under waste disposal lawrequires electronic documentation of the proof when hazardous waste is disposed of with individualproof of disposal. This means that all the books ofevidence kept at Porsche will be replaced by elec-tronic evidence with effect from this date. As from February 2011, data to be transmitted byelectronic data transfer have to bear a qualified electronic signature. Card readers will be installed in the respective departments by this time. The department Environmental Protection at the Work-place will prepare the respective stipulations andintroduce the processes.

Environmental protection at the workplace: Auditing of outside companies at the FacilityNumerous outside companies and contractors workregularly at the Porsche Facility. When they are com-missioned, these companies are given the so-called“Code of Conduct for Environmental Protection”, containing stipulations relevant to the environmentgoverning work carried out at the Porsche Facility.Random tests were undertaken on over 20 outsidefirms to ascertain their knowledge of the content of the new Code of Conduct. Most of the companiesknew and implemented the “Code of Conduct for Environmental Protection”. The result of the audit was very satisfactory.

Environmental protection at the workplace: Awareness of and information for personnelA number of environmental training sessions wereagain conducted over the past year – because motivated and qualified staff whose ideas can be incorporated in the work process are our most important capital. In connection with vocational training, all appren-tices in their last training year were given qualifica-tion training on fundamental environmental topics at Porsche. The training project “Train the Trainer” was also very successful. This included conveying environ-mental topics from production to all master tech-nicians in a practical way. Once they had been wellinformed, the master technicians went on to traintheir co-workers.

Against the background of the global economy, individual days of short-time working were intro-duced during the period from September throughDecember. As a result, production figures sank to 25,589 completed vehicles, 22,125 of whichwere 997 models and 3,464 Boxsters. A total of 57,800 engines were produced.

The updated Environmental Statement 2010 takesaccount of the innovations introduced in Annex IV of EMAS III. In future, the specified core indicators will be used in the Environmental Statement of Porsche AG to show fundamental direct environ-mental impacts.

The reference base for the core indicators is the total output quantity of 44,329 tonnes at the Zuffen-hausen Facility, calculated using the production figure and the weight of the vehicle models and the number of engines produced and their weight. The production of components for body shell and upholstery has not been taken into account.

The built-up area at the Zuffenhausen Facility amounts to 287,880 square meters.

With these new core indicators, Porsche ensures that the environmental performance of the funda-mental environmental impacts is being illustrated. It is not possible to compare the core indicators with other locations, however, due to different pro-duction figures, depth of production and location-specific underlying conditions.

Development of the Environmental IndicatorsIn general terms, input and output consumptiondepends on the total output quantities of the Zuffen-hausen Facility. The decline in the consumption of resources and in emissions is primarily due to the economic crisis and to the short-time working this caused at the Zuffenhausen Facility and is almost proportionate to the reduction in the produc-tion figures. This is particularly true of production

materials, energy consumption and solvent emis-sions and of waste water from the paint shop. The striking reduction in the quantity of waste gene-rated is also due to the reorganization of mechani-cal production from series to spare part production. As a consequence, the waste types non-halogen pro-cessing emulsions as well as metal and non-metalwaste were considerably reduced.

ElectricityPorsche AG procures its electrical power for the Zuffenhausen Facility from external energy utilitycompanies. Due to the lower number of productiondays in the calendar year 2009, electricity con-sumption sank almost in proportion with the declinein production. Part of the reduction is also due to energy economy measures and to changes in production in the field of assemblies.

In 2009 at total of 57,086 MWh of electric energy and 79,015 MWh of heat energy were consumed at the Zuffenhausen Facility.

HeatThe primary energy sources are heating oil and gaswhich serve to cover the heating requirements of the production buildings, offices, halls and productionplant. Due to the slump in sales in the calendar year2009, less heating energy and process heat wererequired. Total heat consumption declined in accord-ance with the reduction in production.

The emissions recorded here were calculated on the basis of consumption and the respective emission factors.

WaterWater consumption in 2009 was met by 109,407 m³of mains water and 23,287 m³ of treated well water on the Facility site. The entire water consumption at the Zuffenhausen Facility declined in 2009 asthere were fewer production days. The figures forwater consumption show that they too are clearlydependent on production figures.

WastewaterWastewater from production is treated de-centrallyand fed as an indirect discharger to the wastewaterplant in Münster via the municipal sewer system. The total wastewater generated in 2009 dropped in accordance with the decline in freshwater con-sumption.

Wastewater treatment plant such as light materialseparation equipment and the neutralization systems in the paint shop, licensed in accordancewith water law, are in operation to treat pollutedwastewater. Since considerably lower quantities ofcooling lubricant emulsions and water for washingare generated for treatment by the spare part production in mechanical production, it was possibleto decommission the vacuum evaporator plant.

Total wastewater quantities from the paint shop declined in 2009 almost in proportion to the reduc-tion in unit quantities.

Environmental Targets of Porsche AG at the Zuffenhausen Facility in Fiscal Year 2009/10

Environmental EnvironmentalAspects Target Measure Dept./Div.

Waste

>>>

To reduce waste volumes

Reduction of “single-use extra packaging” by 5%.

Several workshops have been conducted to examine the delivery and especially the packaging of engine parts at the multifunction hall. The types of packaging were classified. By so doing it was possible to identify numerous parts with packagingmaterial that could be reduced by over 5 % withoutany loss of quality.

Engine assembly

The environmental targets for the fiscal year2009/10 have been achieved.

As the fiscal year has been changed and the calen-dar year introduced as the business year, the second half of 2010 will be a stub year at Porsche. This will last from August 1, to December 31, 2010.

The Porsche Target Agreement Process will be adjusted accordingly. Up until the end of the stubyear, all departments and divisions will continue topursue the target of conserving and economizing on resources and energy. New environmental targets will be adopted for 2011which will then be the first business year at Porscheto correspond to the calendar year.

Emissions To reduce solvent emissions

Reduction of solvent emissions by 1,000 kg in the fiscal year 2009/10 by not using underbody conservation wax.

As a result of interdisciplinary development work between development and production, it has been possible to fully dispense with the underbody conservation of Porsche vehicles in vehicle assembly.

Environmental management

To enhance permit management

Reduction of existing and prevention of further film adhesion on new vehicles by using closed railcars. (About 70 % of new vehicles, esp. the Cayenne and Panamera models for the overseas markets via the Emden and Bremerhaven ports).

The rail transport successfully put into practice for new Cayenne and Panamera cars has been further optimized by changing to closed railwayfreight cars. The use of closed railway freight carsprevents the cars from becoming dirtied and damaged by flash rust and pollutants. Time-con-suming and costly car-wrapping the new vehicles is reduced and avoided.

Logistics

Dept. of Environ-mental protection at the workplace

Further improvements in the environmentally-relevant permit process of Porsche AG and itssubsidiaries.

A requirement list has been compiled based on feedback from interviews on a permit process that has been conducted. This sets forth the respon-sibilities and internal contact persons for future permit processes. The approach was explained to the employees at training sessions.

Resources Reduction of fuel consumption in the dryers KTL,filler coat and top coat from the existing paint shopby 5% through optimized operation.

The gas consumption of the UBS dryer was reducedby a number of technical measures. Furthermore, the temperature was dropped by 30 Kin the dryers’ preheating phase. In addition it was possible to reduce the volume current by optimizedair circulation systems.

Environmental policy, climate protection and the scarcity of sources of energy are increasing the pres-sure on society with respect to energy efficiency. Porsche is also aware of its entrepreneurial respon-sibility to protect the environment and for the sus-tainable use of resources. By implementing the Energy Management Systems in accordance with EN 16001, Porsche is demonstrating how importantthe field of energy efficiency is for environmental protection at the workplace. As an integral part of the Environmental Management System which hasbeen functioning well for some years already, po-tential improvements in energy efficiency are beingestablished and put into effect.

When looking back at the past year it seems that thereduction in environmental impact is primarily due to the economic crisis and the resultant poor sales in individual Porsche markets. Porsche’s aim is, how-

ever, to achieve growth and progress through en-vironmental protection. This is why we are continu-ing to evolve our commitment to environmentalprotection by action to conserve resources, for energy efficiency and by avoiding emissions, waste and wastewater.

Despite the economic crisis we have been able tosuccessfully realize our ambitious targets and activ-ities in the fiscal year 2009/10. It is the personalcommitment of our executives and employees that isprimarily responsible for our successes in environ-mental protection.

We will exploit our opportunities to protect the en-vironment and assume responsibility for both today’sand future generations as this is the only way to guarantee permanent protection of the environmentand simultaneously promote economic growth.
