project data

The building stands in the typical residual space of the Venetian countryside, in a contact area between the urban center of San Dona di Piave, the suburban aggregates and a group of malls. To isolate itself to the disorganized complexity of the context, the building is designed as a monolithic object, a “pure form”, living on a dualism between a more introspective feeling (the court) and a more open one to the surrounding landscape. The object is framed only by four large windows, useful to commercial function and to panoramic perception either. The surrounding wood of walnut trees, is for a complete isolation from the messy context and the great infrastructure, but it’s also a recovery of a natural character of the area.In this way, the vegetation protects the monolith. The forest isn’t only the soft border to the other properties and to the infrastrucutre, but also an element of control for solar radiation.

project data

Zhaoquing is a resort town in the Guangdong region, the center of a system of lakes and basins and large green areas, where the chinese urban settlement has not yet arrived. The customer need was to create a water-park, to support the future tourism system, something that contained accommodation and that could be a link between the external road and the island where the main hotel would be located. The park is a part of the central element of a larger system of area modification; the character is intentionally antropic to avoid the typical duplicity of mimetical attitude. Conceptually the ecopark is an artificial “drapery” in which the elevated parts are paths of the slow mobility, and the depressions are the tematic gardens. The aquatic component is present in many of the depressions, which performs as fitodepurative tanks. The whole system is realized through a complete balance in soil movement.

The competition requests were to deign a model that could express a direct relationship with the landscape and coherence energy, putting the building in the energy class A.Strategies to fulfill the requests, developed on two parallel fronts:- the micro-devices’ prototype design to pursue a self-sufficiency by reducing waste.- the relationship with the landscape through an aware use of local resources. In this way, the prototype can restore the traditional relationship betweet artifact and territory.

The tripartite division of the lagoon for the construc-tion of barrier for protection from rising sea levels. The element was designed from hydraulic engi-neering solutions that refer to the technologies of earth dams. The elements for building a loose material’s dam is used in a different way and are characterized by a strong natural look. On the banks is placed a permeable layer to protect the core which forms the main body; it is made of a compact clay and it ensures mechanical strength and the tightness water of the dam. The inclusion of the dam transform the water environment defin-ing a new lagoon morphology

A considerable part of the barrier element is inserted in a strategic position in the upper zone of the lagoon and bordering with the Park of North Lagoon and it is located between the islands of Burano and Sant’Erasmo. The construction of the dam is used for building some structures that are localized with different characteristic within the tour-ism sector of the city of Venice. This alternative tourist proposal is characterized by the possi-bility of experiencing the natural environment at 360° and being able to know in depth the beauty of the scenery of the lagoon.

Within the lagoon of Venice is realized a project for build a tecnology park that is harmoniously inserted into the territory in the territory, in the eco-nomic environment, infrastructural and urban. The parks are designed to host the plants for biofuel production and electricity generation, resulting from the intensive production of biomass through the cultivation of microalgae in a controlled industrial processes. This production allow energy self-sufficiency of the new polarity. The design of the parks that produce energy electricity draws a new horizon whitin the venice urban lake.

Some areas of the lagoon are characterized by the complete disappearance of the natural elements of this ecosystem as the typical profile of saltmarsh seabed; in this context the protection element doesn't need a material mitigation but it has a linear development using foreign material to the environment in which is inserted. The explicit presence of the building is an opportunity to sup-port the structures of the new polarity. The different structure of the protection element manteins the objective of the urban lake’s safeguarding and the possible re-naturalization of the two lagoons.

In the new morphology the possibility of using tem-porary structures, lighten the pressures related to temporary sporting, social and cultural activity. The new polarities are design by a permanent multy/purpose platform conceived as spaces to be modified as needed. This concept has many posi-tive aspects including: cost reduction, reduced environmental impacts, more flexibility in planning, clarity of construction schedule, less inconvenience to the local population due to lower construction time.

competition graphics

The project starts from the concept of the Venetian lagoon as an ecosystem which is always under the pressure of spatial planning and relevant human actions. The strategy has been to propose a system of protection and management of the fragile lagoon territory, investigating the potential of sustainable spatial transformations and adaptive strategies for the 2100 scenario.Climate Change and the IPCC scenarios studies led to the design of a new morphology of safeguard that highlight the natural dual character hyperdense / ipervoid lagoon system: a transformation not for Venice only but for the whole lagoon.

master plan

A scenario design for a futuristic and sustainable expansion area as alternative to the “classic” master plan, is the main objective of the urban project for Quarantoli. The core is composed of a low speed street, with woonerf systems, and of a big green area which collects most of the standards for services: a kind of green lung which allows the system to address the better side represented by this “slow” system. The proposed settlement has a more direct relationship with the agricultural landscape through a soften edge to the countryside. On the other hand there’s an opposite approach, a “strong” way to face the main street.

A residential facility for mental ill is not a usual topic of housing design; it isn’t common to manage problems so different from more useful assitential housing systems. Due to this uncommon situation the main design reference has been the “architectural fence.”The need for a landlocked designed space crossed with the willness to provide two distinct building sides: on one hand a closure to the nearby road, on the other hand a system to build a direct relationship with the landscape. The result is a double fence: the great one is represented by the “L” shaped building containing the classical border fence.

project planThe restyling of one of the oldest and most valuable retail space in Venice is a complex issue. The choosen approach starts fixing key points (trademarks of Torrefazione Marchi) shifting radically the register of everything else, always in proper respect of such a fragile location. The allegorical elements, such as coffee bags stacked in the customer area, the position of the counter and the monumental toasting machine, were the cornerstones for all the rest. The craftspace mood remained the same, thanks to the selected materials.

In a such peculiar and fragile contex as Trentino Alpine region, design a sport center is more a challange than a main theme. The design of the complex is based on the idea of built border, a fence as a tectonic element. The result is a complete dirarry of the existing situation that leads to a process of redesign of the entire landscape perception.

A kindergarden not only as a school but as a facility for the entire community; thinking teaching space not only as a classroom tbut also as outsourcing of the learning process: these have been the theme for this competition.Starting from the concept of sustainability as a designing tool, the complex is conceived as a system of individual spaces for teaching, which can grow in number mantaining the basic conformation of the whole system. One of the greatest values is the creation of public a space right in the middle of a open-air teaching space.

Designing a particular productive building in such a relevant landscape, is a way to deal with innovative tools of suistainable and environmental design.Following the principles of critical regionalism, wich says that architecture should be something that the place expects, we have tried to design a building, as much as possible, in harmony with the landscape and the specific local and resources. The use of small devices and strategies, like the reduction of visual impact or the different treatment of the facades, is due to this approach.

Transform the garden into a living room, providing more than just a piece of green to every inhabitant of an terraced for Qarantoli, is the key element for the design of this compelx. The entire system is based of the single living unit, in which the living represent the physical connection between the semi-public entrance and the private garden. The other peculiarity is that all the gardens, separated from the road, face on an agricltural park, a landscape element of absolute interest, that can improve the housing quality. From the car to the park, staying comfortably in your house.

The use of biult “fence” has become a necessity for the motel design in Levata. The plot was right in the middle of an industrial area, and to build a barrier seemed to be the right way to provide isolation and privacy. The tectonic system of service facilities and management structure protects the within a space from the uncomfortable outside. The guest section is developped according to the criteria of minimal cell and its aggregation for modules, due to the necessity of the constant presene of the car: each room is striclty linked to its own parking lot.

Building a complex for tourists in such a inhospitable territory, like is Corsica, the simplicity and speed of intervention are the key elements for a correct attitude. For this reason the use of systems composed of single modules is almost essential. The single cell is made of wood, with the off-site construction tecnology, and organized on modules linked to the container size, to allow a simple portability. In addition this kind of tecnoology allows a reduction in terms of time and resources for the construction.
