This is a list of Canadian provinces and territories by population, based on Statistics

Canada estimates as of July 1, 2011.[1]

Canada has ten provinces and three territories. The three territories of Nunavut, Yukon,

and Northwest Territories account for over a third of Canada's area but have very few people,

negatively skewing the national population density value. Canada's population is concentrated inthe areas close to the U.S. border . As a result, most Canadians live in areas with densities higher

than the national average of 3.731 persons per square kilometre.

All territories and provinces excluding the Northwest Territories increased in population from

January 2008 to January 2009. In terms of percentage change, the fastest-growing province or

territory was Alberta with an increase of 2.56% from January 2008 to January 2009, followed

by Yukon with 2.09% growth. The only province or territory shrinking in population was

the Northwest Territories with a loss of 1.14% from January 2008 to January 2009. These

different rates of change are caused by birth and death rates, as well as

interprovincial migration and immigration from outside Canada. As a whole, Canada's population

grew by 1.21% from January 2008 to January 2009. Canada's population has increased every

year since Confederation in 1867 (see List of population of Canada by years).

[edit]Listing

Percentage of total national population is given to the nearest tenth of a percent. Land area

statistics exclude freshwater area and are current as of July 1, 2011. Population density is given

to two decimal places in persons per square kilometre (except for the territories, whose

population density is given to three decimal places).

The table below lists the 100 largest municipalities in Canada by population, using data from

the Canada 2006 census for census subdivisions.[1]

This list includes only the population within a municipality's boundaries as defined at the time of

the census. Many municipalities are part of a larger  census metropolitan area or  census

agglomeration. For their ranking, see the list of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in Canada.

Shown above, over half of the 100 largest Canadian municipalities are located in one of the two

largest provinces – Ontario and Quebec. Very few are listed as being in one of the Atlantic

Provinces – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and

Labrador, as well as the Prairie Provinces – Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. There are

none listed in the Territories – Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon. The last province, with

an average (relatively) amount of cities listed, is British Columbia.

Populations shown for 2001 and 1996 are what the populations would have been if the

municipal boundaries were as defined in 2006. Because of mergers and demergers, these

numbers may be different from the populations for the municipalities as their boundaries

were actually defined in those years.

These are only city proper populations; suburbs outside city limits are not included.

Quebec municipal classifications such as "Ville" have not been translated, because they do

not directly correspond to the meaning generally understood by their English translations.

Translating to "City" would be inaccurate.

Some municipalities calculate their populations differently than Statistics Canada. For

example, Statistics Canada does not count post-secondary students in the municipality

where they are attending school, yet those municipalities may count them.
