GUEST VOCALIST - VALERIE DUKE

Valerie Duke is a native of Chattanooga, TN, and an alumna of Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts (CCA) where she majored in Musical Theatre. In 2005, she traveled to South Korea with CCA’s Choo Choo Kids to represent the United States at the Gangneung International Arts Festival. Later that year Valerie moved to NYC to further her studies of Musical Theatre. In May of 2010 Valerie auditioned for The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, and at the age of 23 was asked to join the prestigious ensemble led by famous trombonist Larry O’Brien. It was with Glenn Miller that she toured America, Canada, and Japan. After the tour she was asked to join the Brad Walker Orchestra and was their vocalist for two years. In February of 2013 Valerie was asked to sing alongside two well-known ladies of jazz, Greta Matassa and Hedreich Nichols, at the 7th annual All Angels Jazz Festival in Kauai. She returned to sing at the jazz festival two years later to headline with New Orleans jazz pianist, Matt Lemmler.

Ms. Duke spent four years writing and performing her original music in New York City, many of which can be found on her YouTube channel. Three of her original jazz songs can be found in the movie Ladies of the House. Valerie graduated with a degree in Nursing in May of 2019 from Chattanooga State Community College. Valerie is excited to be back and swinging with the Chattanooga Symphony’s Big Band. She would like to dedicate this performance to her fiancé Colt and daughter Sofia.

CLAPPING: CSO musicians love to hear people applauding, but there are times when you normally don’t applaud at a classical concert. For our Barnett & Company Masterworks concerts, people generally clap after the entire piece is done. There may be three or four “parts” or movements in each piece, but it’s best to wait until after the entire piece is performed and the conductor has dropped the baton. If in doubt, watch for the conductor to completely lower their arms and begin to acknowledge the orchestra. If you’re still unsure, wait until others begin clapping and follow their lead! That being said, don’t feel embarrassed if you do clap. We appreciate it!

HALL/INTERMISSION: Guests are welcome to leave their seats and move about the venue during intermission, but we ask that you wait until the lights have been turned on before attempting to exit. Please refrain from entering or exiting the hall during a piece, or wait until in between movements.

THINGS TO AVOID: Even the smallest sounds are amplified in a performance hall. Before the performance begins, please unwrap candy, turn down hearing aids and turn off all pagers, cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. Photography and sound recordings are not permitted. hile we hope you are excited to discuss the performance post-concert, we ask that you please refrain from holding conversations while a piece is being performed. Avoiding these and other distractions helps create an environment in which the music can be heard and enjoyed by all. If you are a student and would like to take notes for your paper, please ask the box office or an usher to seat you close to the stage or towards the back of the hall so you can have some light to write.
