Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Desk of the Chaplain: Sacred Heart Solemnity History of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart
It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first
indications of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Nevertheless, the
devotion remained an individual or at least a private devotion. It was
reserved to St. Jean Eudes (1602-1680) to make it public, to honor it
with an Office, and to establish a feast for it. Père Eudes was above
all the apostle of the Heart of Mary; but in his devotion to the
Immaculate Heart there was a share for the Heart of Jesus. Little by
little the devotion to the Sacred Heart became a separate one, and on
31 August, 1670, the first feast of the Sacred Heart was celebrated
with great solemnity in Rennes (Brittany). The feast soon spread to
other dioceses, and the devotion was likewise adopted in various
religious communities.
It was to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), a humble sister
of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial, that Christ chose to reveal the
desires of His Heart and to confide the task of imparting new life to
the devotion. These revelations were numerous. Jesus permitted
Margaret Mary, as He had formerly allowed St. Gertrude, to rest her
head upon His Heart, and then disclosed to her the wonders of His
love, telling her that He desired to make them known to all mankind
and to diffuse the treasures of His goodness, and that He had chosen
her for this work (1673).
He requested to be honored under the figure of His Heart of flesh.
He appeared radiant with love and asked for a devotion of expiatory
love - frequent Communion, Communion on the First Friday of the
month, and the observance of the Holy Hour (1674). He told her
(1675): "Behold the Heart that has so loved men . . . instead of
gratitude I receive from the greater part (of mankind) only
ingratitude..." He asked her for a feast of reparation of the Friday
after the octave of Corpus Christi.
A few days after the "great apparition", of June, 1675, Margaret
Mary made all known to St. Claude de la Colombière, S.J.
Recognizing the action of the spirit of God, he consecrated himself
to the Sacred Heart, directed her to write an account of the
apparition, and he made use of every available opportunity
discreetly to circulate this account through France and England.
After his death, his journal, containing the account that he had
requested of Margaret Mary, together with a few reflections on the
usefulness of the devotion and a beautiful "offering" to the Sacred
Heart, was published at Lyons in 1684.
The death of St. Margaret Mary, 17 October 1690, did not dampen
the ardor of those interested. In spite of all sorts of obstacles, and of
the slowness of the Holy See, the devotion spread, particularly in
religious communities. The Marseilles plague, 1720, furnished
perhaps the first occasion for a solemn consecration and public
worship outside of religious communities. Other cities of the South
of France followed the example of Marseilles, and thus the devotion
became a popular one.
In 1726 it was deemed advisable once more to importune Rome for
a feast with a Mass and Office of its own, but, in 1729, Rome again
refused. However, in 1765, it finally yielded and that same year, at
the request of the Queen of France, the feast was received by the
episcopate. In 1856, at the urgent entreaties of the French bishops,
Blessed Pope Pius IX extended the feast to the universal Church.
The acts of consecration and of reparation were everywhere
introduced together with the devotion. Finally, on 11 June, 1899, by
order of Leo XIII, and with the formula prescribed by him, all
mankind was solemnly consecrated to the Sacred Heart.

If you did not watch “The War of the Vendee” Movie last
Wednesday at St. Rose, you missed a great treat and a lot of fun! The film's director, Jim Morlino, was also very
interesting to listen to. I was impressed at the fact that he had
directed a movie which spoke both to adults and urchins. The
little ones were so inflamed by the movie and the Director’s
words that they all wanted to play in his next movie… Thank
you to all those who made a priority to come and support this
community event. You may order online this DVD and others

June 3, 2013
Dear Faithful of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois,
The 2013 storm season has only just begun and already we
have witnessed tragedies in Oklahoma of unprecedented
proportions. Our prayers are with the families in Moore and
Oklahoma City and surrounding areas who have lost loved
ones or are among those injured. Relief efforts of many
government and social aid agencies, including Catholic
Charities USA, are already in action delivering emergency
service to the affected areas. We are grateful to all immediate
relief efforts and those working around the clock to help those
in need.
In light of this natural disaster and in anticipation of others yet
to come, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, President of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has asked all the
Bishops of the United States to encourage our parishes to take
up a special collection during the next couple of months to
assist in recovery efforts from the recent storms in the
Archdiocese of Oklahoma and other natural disasters that the
Church in this country may suffer this year. He requested that
we broaden this appeal in anticipation of more domestic
disasters possibly awaiting us this year. The funds collected in
this one-time special appeal for the 2013 storms and disasters
will be used to support the efforts of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities, USA,
the official domestic relief agency of the U. S. Catholic
Church, as they respond to immediate emergency needs for
such necessities as water, food, shelter, and medical care, as
well as to the long term need to rebuild after widespread
destruction, and to the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the
Church.
Please note that the Peter's Pence Collection in support of the
Holy Father is scheduled to be taken up on the weekend of
June 29-30. I urge you not to substitute one collection for the
other, as the generosity of Catholics is widespread in response
to individual needs.
Accordingly, I authorize such a collection during June or July
and hope that you will consider the victims of this tornado and
other storms in the coming weeks.
Additional information on the U.S. Catholic community's
response to this emergency and how U.S. Catholics can help
can be found at www.catholiccharitiesusa.org and
www.usccb.org
Your generous and timely response to the great needs will be
much appreciated.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki
Bishop of Springfield in Illinois
