From the desk of

Father Flores It is good to experience the hot days of July and August as we enjoy the beauty that surrounds us in its full bloom of life. The lake, the rivers, the mountains and the flowers and gar-dens in our yards seem to be at their best this time of year, and we can easily turn to the Lord and thank Him for the beauty and the wonder of His creation. As beautiful as creation is, it can only ever be a reflection of that true beauty who is God. It is a common mistake to think that God is in His creation; it is truer to say that God created all that exists, He keeps it in existence, and this creation re-flects His own beauty. This is why “encountering” God in nature can only give a one-dimensional experience of God. God does not simply want to awe and astound us, He wants to share His life with us, which is called Grace. Nature or the created world can never offer this. Not only does God want to share His life with us; it is necessary to share in His life if we are to have union with Him in this life and in the next. This month, Holy Mother Church presents us with two feasts that encourage us and cheer us on to preserving and deep-ening this union with Him. The first was celebrated last week, the Feast of the Transfiguration. This marks the event of Our Lord being transfigured in the presence of some of His apos-tles as He conversed with Moses and Elijah. Our Lord’s human nature was altered into a visibly glorious version of itself during those brief moments. Perhaps He is showing what He can do and desires to do with our own nature through the power of His grace. The second feast is that of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the ancient belief of our religion, the Blessed Virgin Mary did not die but was assumed body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Just as in the Transfiguration, Our Lord shows what He can do with our nature in the Assumption. He shows the fullness of our desti-ny of life in Him—Grace. Our Lady was taken to God body and soul to take her place in heaven. Unlike Jesus, who is God and man, Our Lady is only human and yet she shares the fullness of union with the divine. Her nature, which once only reflected His beauty, is now joined for eternity with not only the beauty of God, but with all that He is in heaven. She was destined for this because of her election as the Mother of the Lord. You and I are destined for this too because of our election as sons and daughters of God which we received at Baptism, the beginning of our life of Grace.

In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Flores

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY

Saturday, August 15th 8:30am Mass

This year, since the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary falls on a Saturday, the obligation to attend Mass on that day is dispensed. We will, however, offer Mass that day at 8:30am for those who wish to attend Mass. Also, we have been notified that the Tribal Council decided to cancel the annual pilgrimage to Cataldo for the celebration of the feast of the Assumption of Mary. Therefore the pilgrimage to Cataldo, the Holy Mass and celebration for the Feast of the Assumption will not take place this year in Cataldo. We look forward to next year when we can celebrate together again.

SAVE THE DATE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 21

FEAST DAY OF POPE ST. PIUS X Please join us for Mass at noon in honor and celebration of our patron, Pope St. Pius X. Following Mass, we plan to bless our new sign and enjoy lemonade and cookies in the courtyard near the entrance of the Church.

(Please note: Some or all are subject to change based on the pandemic. All safety protocols will be followed.)

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is weekly, Thursdays from 9am until 6pm. Please visit the parish website to sign up for a one-hour time slot. For those with no access to the internet, please contact Paul Orozco at 208-784-8251.

HOLY WATER DISPENSER

Since we are unable to offer holy water in the fonts at the entrances of the Church during the pandem-ic, you now have access to a holy

water dispenser outside the sacristy . Feel free to fill a bottle or container to have at home. It is a beautiful sacramental. A limited supply of bottles are available for a nominal cost.

WHY DO CATHOLICS TEACH OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY?

(Part 2 of 2: continued from last week)

Catholics believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary was as-sumed body and soul into heaven. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in paragraph 966, says that the Assump-tion is “a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians.” But where do we find evidence of this belief? Interestingly, perhaps the most convincing evidence for the Assumption is actually a lack of physical evidence. What do I mean by that? In short, the bones of Mary are nowhere to be found. Why is this important? In ancient times, the bones of saints and martyrs were closely guarded and highly prized. With many, there are great churches and shrines built over the final resting places of these holy people. If this is the case, then how much more venerated would be the bones of the Mother of God? Yet no church claims to have them. Why? Because they are nowhere to be found on earth. Mary is now in heaven “exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things.” (CCC 966) For further study: CCC 966-972 Excerpts from A Minute in the Church, Volume II, by Gus Lloyd, with permission. Dear Sisters in Christ, We have come to the difficult decision of cancelling the women’s retreat for this year. We

know that we will all get through this challenging and uncertain time through our faith and with each other. Remember to look for the miracles that contin-ue to happen in spite of this seemingly dark time. As the song goes, “Our hope is in the Lord.” We will provide more information for next year’s retreat and look forward to seeing you in 2021. God bless you and keep you . . . And until then,

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

HELPING DURING THE PANDEMIC We, at your Pope St. Pius X Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, are continuing to help those in need in our community remotely to curb the spread of COVID19. One of the things that has become apparent is the im-portance of making personal visits with those in need. The personal interaction paints a much clearer picture of our friends’ needs and concerns which in turn increases our understanding and compassion; thereby, we are better able to convey our support as Jesus motivated neighbors. We hope to return to home visits as soon as possible. The type of help that is being requested has changed some. The request for rental and utility assistance from those who have a home has slowed, only to be replaced by the increased need of housing as they are homeless. Many have left the larger cities to escape unaffordable housing and ongoing violence. Those who call for assis-tance have used their last bit of money to get here just to find that affordable housing here has dwindled as many are staying in their homes and the influx of people into our community continues to rise. Some we can help; others find there is nowhere to turn. Disturbingly, some are sen-iors who have been displaced for one reason or another. We help where we can and guide them to other resources. Unfortunately, few can help with their immediate needs. If you are interested in joining this mission of charity, please contact me at the information below. Please continue to pray for those in need.

Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.” MATTHEW 14:29 When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond with Stewardship immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the power of his presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us!
