To Run, or Not to Run: the Controversy over the Colt Run

It’s obvious that all exercise is good exercise, including gym class. But when it comes to the topic of ‘to run, or not to run,’ students are very opinionated. For years students have been debating the controversial topic of to run, or not to run. In middle school students ran the Bull Dog Run and the Lake Run; this year we run the Colt Run, and students continue to express their feelings about the often dreaded 1.5 mile sprint. “It’s healthy for students, and it’s probably good for first year students,” 9th grader Cassandra Gahrett says. Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 19) It's a good time to play or watch over little kids -- your instincts are good, so your energy should help you get along with them almost per-

fectly. If you have younger siblings, you know what to do.

Taurus (Apr 20 - May 20) You get all worked up over something that seems silly to your parents -- but that doesn't stop you. It's one of those times when you really need

to make sure your point of view is taken seriously. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) See whether your friends can take a little debate that you want to start. You're mostly just bored and looking for a diversion, but you may also

have ulterior motives in mind.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22) If you feel the need to shop (it could happen), you also need to spend like a fiend. That might not be so great for you if you're tapped out, so

work some of your retail magic.

Leo (July 23 - Aug 22)

You're feeling playful and creative, so even if you're just hanging out, you have all sorts of new ways to pass the time. Some work out, some

don't so much, but you're happy just to experiment.

Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22) You need a break. There's way too much going down right now, and you're having a hard time keeping up with it all. Try your best to

breathe and let stuff happen on its own. Get back in the game next week. Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22) You may need to step up and say something when your people get weird -- they just need some leadership to get them moving in the right

direction, you can get back to normal soon.

Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Look around and shift the balance of power without making a big

drama out of it. You'd rather operate in secret anyway, so you should be able to get your people to play along.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21) You need to push things somewhat. Maybe it's a good time to ask out

that total hottie, or maybe you need to start pestering your parents about that big perk. Your risk-taking should pay off somehow.

Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19) You should do your best to hang onto what's rightfully yours right now

-- someone may take it. Of course, it's more subtle than just a simple theft, but if you're wary, you can maintain the status quo.

Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18) Someone needs to hear from you soon -- maybe an ex, or maybe some-

one else you haven't thought about in a while. Check in with a few folks and see where they're at. It should all be clear soon.

Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20) There's so much weirdness going on around you that you might feel as

if you're at the circus, or even a freak show. Try your best not to gawk, though -- nobody wants to feel as if they're your clown.

It won’t be anytime soon until Washingtonians forget about the massive snow

storms that pounded our state late last year and early in the new year. It was the first white

Christmas in Washington since 1990. Many families were housebound, stuck inside by dan-

gerous roads and cold temperatures. Cabin fever seemed to be wide spread. Our own

school experienced a three day early Winter Break due to the snow. It’s still to be deter-

mined how the days will be made up, some districts are talking about taking some days our

of Spring Break as well as Summer Break to evenly distribute the days we have to make up.

RP Quigley “The Others” Issue 2 – by Michelle Slater and Alyssa Grisham

Dear Erin, The oddest thing happened today; the MCM, Magical Crea-tures Management, found an unknown species. More over,

they discovered it in my Telekinesis class. Apparently they had found sign of an unknown magic pollutant and had been trying to find it for some time. It was huge, not something you would think could remain unknown for very long. From the brief glance I got of it, the thing was black and hairy, had around eight legs and several eyes. The fifteen minutes before the MCM found the creature was weird, as though everyone’s magic had a hole and was slowly disappearing. However, after they caught the creature and left, it seemed I had imagined the entire thing. There seems to be a few weird things about all of Cavelero. Why is the world flat? From all we’ve learned about gravity while manipulating objects, the magic keeping it in place should slowly mold it into a sphere because of the magical pressure pushing from every side. In elemental manipulation there’s another odd factor; the water. According to the basic magi-cal laws, we use the water in the air, and the magic is just compressing the molecules so they turn from vapor to liquid. If this is true, why do we only get water from one source in each wing? Anyway, I just wanted to voice my superstitions. Do you think I’m reading too much into Cavelero? Please write back soon. -Terah Dear Terah, I am sorry it's taken me so long to write back, but I've been extremely busy lately. You see, I've been spending most of my time at my corridor library. I've never thought about Cavelero the way you wrote me last week; I've never been one to test the actually of things, I've just always assumed what is there is there. But it's nerve-wracking enough to hear about the creature with all the legs and eyes, but the lapse in magic is unsettling. We have yet to ex-perience anything that dire in the South West, but the tables have definitely been turned. Things just seem... odd lately. I find it strange to hear about the MCM, but your timing even stranger. Compared to your life lately, mine is nothing to compare. But while it may be nothing, it also may be something, and I figure that information is information. No matter the source. When I received your letter, I stashed it in my jacket pocket. Last Monday I wore the jacket to the library, and the note fell out of my pocket. A scrawny, nervous man knelt, picked it up, and scanned the words before handing it back to me. Continued on page 6

The “Others” Continued from page 5 Before stalking off and out the front doors, he told me my friend, meaning you, and I better keep our noses out of other peoples' business and in our own, where “it belongs”. Naturally, he could have simply been a cross man having a bad day. Simply the man could have acted rudely towards each person that crossed his path. But the way his tone, and his warning, sent shivers down my spine, tells me something is up. Something strange is going on, and between the supposedly flat Cavelero we live on, the wa-ter sources, and that new creature the MCM found the other day? Something tells me some-one has a secret. Cavelero just isn't what it used to be anymore. Apprehensively yours, Erin Dear Erin, Did that man in the library have dark brown hair and narrow glasses? I'm curious because this creep who looked like your description came to our class yesterday. He told us what we saw was "classified" and if he found out any of us told anyone about that thing with the MCM, we could be arrested. Funny thing is he wasn't wearing the Cavelero Security badge which most people going around threatening to arrest people wear. He also had a Southwest accent. Anyway, being me, I decided to double check. Earlier today I went to the Security office around the corner of the Level 4 magic building where I go to school. I went to the front desk and said I had something to report. The officer who came up to hear what I had to say looked bored, but in a way showing he thought he knew everything and that he should be doing more important things, which was good for my case. When he told me to say what I had to say I pretended to have a panic attack, saying I didn't know. He imme-diately looked uncomfortable, and became more understanding. I further explained I had a friend in a different part of Cavelero whom I told everything, and how I didn't know the thing that was in our classroom was classified. The more I explained, the more confused the officer became. He said he didn't know what I was talking about, that he hadn't heard of the thing which came into the Level 4 building and that there wasn't anything classified in the North-east wing. However, he told me to report anymore sightings of the guy who told me that. Tomorrow I'm thinking of going to the MCM to check up what happened to the multiple eye and leg thing. Anyway I'll keep you posted. -Terah

My Sad Awakening By Elaine Potter

I see u sitting there In that old squeaky chair Hat down Eyes to the ground I lift up your chin To see you look up and grin You lean in, I shake… Then awake Waking up from that wonderful dream Is like jumping off of a balance beam Still feeling the excitement But not the enjoyment I get ready for school, knowing I’ll see you And I wish that you’ll see me

A Punk and a Jock

By Ashley Bilyeu Back to school, school starts at 7:10 gets out at 2:00. It doesn’t seem long but the day just drags on and on. Seeing him in the hall always makes my day. My first class is math with Mr. Her-ger. He’s nice; I’m a grade ahead in math. I was cursed with being good in math. I almost feel like I’m repeating last years stuff, but oh well. Mr. Her-ger talks most of the period so we get little time to finish homework. He should just give us the as-signment and then ask that if anyone has ques-tions about it to raise their hand. If he doesn’t talk too much I get done first, but not always. I have only two friends in the class Mia and Bella. As the bell rings, it turns out that I have homework to-night. I walk to my next class alone. It’s right across the hall. Before I get to English, ohmigosh I see him. Jake is right down the hall. He looks my way and I look away. I wish he knew me. English is mostly reading and writing. I don’t dislike reading, but if I’m going to read a book it has to be interesting. The books I like most are fantasy books. I love getting lost in them. Just then Mr. Cals yells, “Chrystal snap out of it!” I then snap back to real-ity. I was day dreaming about Jake, I usually dream about him all day until a teacher snaps me out of it. I won’t bore you with my dreams. I find out then that I have a quiz tomorrow on the speech he just gave, which I zoned out on. Well this sucks. I’m not really worried about my grades, but still it would be nice to finally have a decent grade. It’s like all teachers do is think up quizzes and tests, don’t they know that we have better things to do than study for tests. The bell rings, and I’m so glad that 70 minutes went by so fast.

Megan Prior:Welcoming One of Our Newer Students to Cavelero

By Alyssa Grisham

I’ve sat next to Megan in my English class for a couple months, now. I was first introduced to her along with the rest of the class this year. I learned that she had moved here over the summer, she hadn’t lived in the United States for nine years, and (what I found to be the coolest thing) she had moved from Scot-land.

So, a few weeks later, when we sat down for an interview, she was more than happy to answer my questions. And so, Cavel-ero’s newspaper staff would like to welcome Megan to our school and wish her a great school year. And to our readers, we

come you enjoy the interview as much as we did:

“Mr. Cook is the best!” That’s what some of the teammates said about their wonderful coach. After watching in on some of the practices, I’ve seen some great team work. They all seem to be able to know where they’re going and where they need to be. “He plays with them.” That’s what Kayla Arns said. She also thinks that the team is great. “They are

Megan Prior: Welcoming One of Our Newer Students at Cavelero

Continued from page 8

What do you think about Lake Stevens and Cavelero so far: I really like it here so far, I like the Lake, but what I like most about Cavelero is that there is no uniforms! What’s the biggest difference so far between Washington and Scotland: Everything is big-ger!

Favorite Food: Well, the one food I could eat forever is apples with caramel dip (you don’t have it in Scotland)

Favorite Pastime: I like to play the piano, and read, but you get so much homework here, I never have any time.

Favorite Movie and Sport: ‘Tuck Everlasting’ is one of my favorites. Definitely swimming! I was on the swim team until I broke my ankle.

How is school different at Cavelero: You don’t wear uniforms here, and you get so much homework here. Seriously, we thought we had it bad in Scotland if we got a worksheet a week, per class! Are the classes harder here: I don’t think they are a lot harder, but you definitely get a lot more homework, and that is hard.

What is your favorite memory from Scotland: My favorite memory from Scotland is be-tween driving around in Sherift Muir, and having the lambs run across the road. Or sitting out on the grass, at lunch time with my friends, on one of the few decent days of the year.

And from Washington: I don’t remember much from WA but I do remember loving birth-day parties at Chuck E. Cheese’s, Kid Heaven!

A US Airways plane crashed into the Hudson river after a flock of birds caused a disturbance during flight. Ap-parently the birds got caught in the engines, and an emergency landing was needed. 150 passengers and the crew of the flight escaped safely. The plane landed in the Hudson, and the waters were 36 degrees while the outside tem-perature was 20 degrees. The survivors were fished from the river and received any necessary medical treatment. Hypothermia, broken bones and other minor bumps and bruises were the only injuries sustained by everyone. A ferry that arrived shortly after the landing cheered as passengers were pulled up. The pi-lots were praised by many for handling the situation so well. According to Fed-eral Aviation Administration and the Department of Agriculture from 1997 to 2007 there were nearly 80,000 reported incidents of birds striking planes, which

Best of the AP Book List In no particular order

Compiled by Alyssa Grisham,

Submitted by students of Pre-AP English classes

1.) Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte: follow the tale of “childhood playmates” that ultimately grow into “soul mates.” 2.) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain: ride along on with Huckleberry Finn as he runs away from home and finds adventure on the Mississippi River. 3.) The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells: in the village of Iping, a stranger arrives wearing “gloves and dark glasses, even inside, and his face is covered in bandages.” When inexplicable crimes begin to happen, they come to the realization that the man is invisible. Follow the town’s adventures as they try to catch a man no one can see. 4.) 1984 by George Orwell: experience this anti-utopian scenario as you follow a man whom struggles against the “menacing state power” known as ‘Big Brother.’ 5.) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte: follow the story of a young orphan in the early nineteenth-century as she goes to work as a governess in England. 6.) Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: set in a war-stricken Afghanistan, follow the story of two small boys whom “test their friendship to its limits.” 7.) The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare: travel along with Bassanio as he bor-rows money in order to “woo the wealthy lady he loves.” 8.) The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain: explore the exciting switch of identity be-tween the Prince of England, Edward Tudor, and pauper Tom Canty. 9.) Native Speaker by Chang-rae Lee: follow the experience of Henry Park as he receives or-ders to spy on a “rising Korean-American politician,” but instead discovers secrets that endan-ger his “family, culture, and identity.” 10.) A Gesture Life by Chang-rae Lee: Franklin Hata appears to be just another average man; however, this novel emphasizes there really is more than meets the eye.

It’s obvious that with school comes tests, quizzes, and finals. And, in most cases, with this comes studying. However, what do students do when they don’t have an hour or two to devote to looking over notes? Il Cavallo’s staff has put together a list to share our Quick Fix: Study Tricks. 1.) Study before you go to bed. It was scientifically proven a few years ago that students remember the information better if you’ve gone over it, and then sleep on it. 2.) Bring your notebook. Got plans? Take your notes and study on-the-go. You’d be sur-prised how much information you can study on a 15 minute drive. 3.) Make flashcards. If memorizing the facts is what’s holding you back, make flashcards to quiz yourself. 4.) Google it! There are tons of great web sites online that have ready-made quizzes to practice with. 5.) Sparknotes! Confused or have to take a test on a novel? Look it up on Sparknotes – take a practice test and get a simplified explanation of the story chapter by chapter. Of course, this is no substitute for actually reading the book. 6.) It generally helps people remember pictures. For instance, if you study a map some-times you can “see” the map more easily if they look up when thinking about it. 7.) Teach someone else. It has been proven that you learn something a lot better if you teach sometime else than when you only read, hear, or see it. 8.) Write it out. It’s easier to remember something if you’ve repeatedly written it out to re-member it. 9.) Pneumonic Memory Device. As crazy as it sounds, making up a song, rhyme, dance, or even a goofy comment helps you to remember the information on a test. 10.) Talk about it. You’re more likely to recall conversations about the information than the actually information by itself.

Pop Culture: 2008 in Review The year 2008 gave us a lot to remember it by. Pop culture society gave us non- stop news stories and tabloids covered all the most important happenings. Each year is remembered by the few key events that took place within that year. So when we look back, what will we remember 2008 by? Oops I Did It Again! Yes, you did Britney! Britney Spears came back from an tough year with two chart topping songs, “Circus” and “Womanizer”, both of which are catchy, and seem to be the hum in all of our mouths. We all knew that deep down she had it in her to be the pop princess she always has been at heart. It sure is good to see her up there shaking her talent onstage again! But did 2008 bring an even more popular pop princess? Miley Cryus, daughter of Billy Ray Cryus and Dis-ney Channel Series star; Miley plowed her way through the industry making a sure name for herself. She started out innocent enough, but now we can only hope that parents are keeping tabs on

their young children’s’ “role models”. How much of a true role model can a 16 year old be? Her fame is new and hopefully in the next year she will fade from the air waves. But we have to give her credit, we may not be the biggest fans, but she has a career that we would all like to brag over. If you know Miley, you probably know the Jonas Broth-ers. A group of three teenage brothers had many singles that were famous. Perhaps more of us should try wearing skin tight clothes when we sing and perform? Props to the Brothers, they have done well. So far so good for the pop sensa-

tions, and even more props to the youngest brother Nick, Nick has diabetes and performs like a real trooper ever con-cert! Heath Ledger’s last movie The Dark Knight came out, and was it fabulous! Fascinatingly dark and evil, the movie woos crowds. Heath Ledger plays the infamous Joker. The role required strong acting skills, and Ledger was the perfect man for the job. The Joker left us with haunting thoughts long after we left the movie theatre. Unfortunately, Ledger never got to see the movie’s success. He died shortly after, and America lost one of the greatest talents in Hollywood. Rihanna chopped her hair, and popped out many top charting singles. Disturbia, Take A Bow and she and T.I.’s Live Your Life were sensa-tions! I’d raise my glass to this gal! She knows what the people want, and she pro-vides it. I know I’m definitely hoping to see more of her in this upcoming year! 2008 is gone now, but the memories it left us with will not fade for a while. Pop culture society will bring us new people, performances and all sorts of other news in 2009. 2008 was such a great year for pop culture, and I know I’m excited for

SUBS: Students Under Behavioral Surveillance

By Alyssa Grisham When teachers are out of class, it is pretty much a given fact that many students see this as an opportunity to slack off, and goof off. They disregard work, classroom rules, and disrespect the substi-

tutes that come in place of your teacher. Personally, I am more of a reserved student; I en-joy having substitute teachers, a lighter workload when my teacher is gone, but I also prefer to get my work done in class so as not to have homework. However, word always gets back to teachers, usually via sub-notes, and tells everything, the good and the bad.

As we get older and keep going through school, it is important to realize that our ac-tions reflect on our classmates just as theirs reflect on us. Especially with substitutes, stu-dents are treated as a class, and it is just as important to remind classmates to behave as it is to do so yourself. I speak from experience.

A few weeks ago, my gym teacher received a less than pleasing sub-note. And al-though it was not everyone in the classes that acted immaturely, we were brought to the sudden, somewhat brutal realization that we, too, would be treated as a whole.

As a result, every gym student in those classes lost credit for the week we had the substitute teacher. We were then given the chance to make up those points the next week as we took on double-gym. Instead of partaking in one exercise daily, we were assigned two and were expected to complete both if we wanted credit for both weeks. While this did not seem fair for all the students that had been respectful and participated the week our teacher was absent, it was true that, as our teacher pointed out, our behavior reflects upon one an-other. It was also true that it is just as important to behave well yourself as it is to remind others to behave.

Miraculously, everyone survived the double-gym week. Not only did we learn that we can push ourselves even more than we previously thought as we participated in one activity per day, but that we are also a team and will be treated as one. Although, I must say: after thirty minutes of the harshest boot-camp any of us have ever been through, I do not think any of us will be misbehaving again for a substitute teacher.

So what are subs really? To some they are an understudy; to others they still may be just a ‘break.’ But to me, SUBS are Students Under Behavioral Surveillance, and we all better bear this in mind the next time our teachers are absent unless we want to find our-selves buried beneath a double workload.

This is a shout out to my BFF’s Sierra, Keanna, Katie! , Elaine
