AstridAstrid is a 21 year old from Mudgee, studying

journalism/media arts at UTS. She moved to the city a

few years ago, and uses sites like Facebook to share

photos and to keep in touch with family and friends

from back home. During semester she doesn't get many

chances to go home, but will go back for long periods of

time during her holidays.

She lives in a share house with 2 other students - there's

no TV in the house, but they all have laptops. She and

her friends in Sydney often meet between classes and

after school, usually visiting the cafe Astrid works at.

They talk a lot about their uni work and other personal

matters, but the topics of travel and career often come

up. Astrid has mentioned her plans to study abroad for

a semester next year - an idea her friends are

encouraging.

After uni, she has her sights firmly set on a career in the

media, and is trying to build a solid portfolio and gain

some relevant experience before she finishes her

studies. She enjoys receiving constructive feedback,

although she's always a little scared before showing her

work to others.

Ruth is a keen listener of both ABC Local and Radio

National, where she regularly catches shows like Hindsight,

By Design, Rearvision and The Book Show. She has been

married for 30 years, and has a son in his late twenties

who works in IT - something she finds useful when she’s

having computer troubles.

Through her work at the language school she has

encountered many different cultures. An influx of Nigerian

students stirred a curiosity in Ruth, which culminated

in her visiting Nigeria with students in 2008 - her first

international trip. She was amazed by what she saw, and

took as many photos as she could.

Encouraged by her family and friend’s reactions, Ruth

began using her photos to tell stories and educate the

wider community about Nigerian culture. She’s looking

forward to learning more technical and story-telling skills

to encourage understanding and acceptance of these new

community members.

“Pool is the place for me

to tell a story”

“Pool is a time capsule for

future generations”

Sam moved to Darwin from Greece when he was 4

years old. Soon after arriving his family witnessed Cyclone

Tracy, an event that left a lasting impression on him. For

his 10th birthday he was given a tape recorder, and in the

years after he recorded the recollections of family and

friends about that infamous Christmas day.

Since then, he has amassed a collection of stories from

his personal life and the greater community. When an

idea strikes him, he has no hesitation in rallying groups

of people around a vision - his motivation and enthusiasm

are infectious.

Sam is now married with 2 young children. He hopes that

his collection of written and audio stories help them and

future generations understand more about him. He often

tells his kids: “Not sharing your stories is the most selfish

thing you can do”.

Mollie shares studio space with four friends who

also work in the film industry. She tends to work

autonomously, but collaborates with her studio-mates

when her workload increases.

She is a member of Screenhub, but typically gets work

from word-of-mouth recommendations. She works hard to

maintain her reputation as professional and reliable. She

has a keen interest in emerging trends in technology and

the media, and regularly scours the internet for new blogs

and works. She is a heavy user of RSS.

She doesn’t put work online as she often has limited rights

to the commercial work she’s done. She is hesitant to

publish other works as they are usually less polished, and

publishing these could effect her reputation.

happening and who’s doing it”

“Pool is a place to enable

great relationships”

“Pool is a place for me

to tap creativity”

“Pool is a great place for my students

to engage with the real world”

“Pool is my community”

Alex has moved from junior positions to a producer at

the ABC over the last 20 years, and has gained recognition

for her work on various arts programs. Recently, she has

found herself thinking less about program features and

more about the strategic direction of Radio National.

Throughout her career as a writer and sound artist she has

accumulated many contacts and friendships in the mid-

career and emerging arts communities, and is respected

for challenging the status quo.

Her work brings her in contact with a range of different

organizations, and a significant part of her job is now

about fostering these relationships.

Penny has worked for the ABC for about 15 years,

and has a good reputation both domestically and

internationally. She is married to a painter who works

from their home in Leichardt, and has 2 high school aged

children.

Penny’s job is to generate ideas for features, and to

follow through on the evolution and production of

these ideas into finished pieces. Penny will sometimes

interview people on the street, collaborate with external

organisations, or team up with other producers.

These days, the majority of her modest budget is spent in

studio production time, but she still makes the occasional

research trip. She generally works autonomously, and

often finds herself mentoring the various contributors

involved with her projects.

Ken had a well established net.art practice before

he started teaching. His students appreciate his

experience as a practioner, especially when he invites

current practioners to participate in seminars and class

assignments.

While he lives close to uni, he regularly spends time in

the country south of the city, often with peers working on

projects. Since he began teaching it’s hard to find enough

time to work on these projects.

He enjoys travel and occasionally works in Tokyo. When

overseas he will visit local institutions and lecture

on trends in media art. He often collaborates with his

international peers.

Lara is a community manager at Pool. She has a

background in media and volunteers at the Starlight

Foundation where she helps to organise fund raising

events.

In a typical day at the ABC she answers emails from Pool

members, posts to the Pool blog, moderates content and

keeps the community momentum going. She will also liase

with producers and stakeholders about upcoming projects.

She regularly gives talks to external interest groups, and

finds that people often ask her about getting involved.

She loves this part of her job because she feels like she’s

making a difference.
