EDITION 16 AUTUMN 2016 www.wynyardmatters.org Poo-bag dumping – is Wynyard going to the dogs? We love dogs. Always have. Always will. Within the family, we currently have ‘Pudding’, our daughter’s chocolate labrador, ‘Pickle’, grandson Isaac’s new labrador puppy pet, and ‘Spud’ and ‘Ruby’, our elder son’s two ageing border terrier terrors. Great little people all . . . Love ‘em to bits . . . Sadly, delight in our four-legged friends has been soured somewhat in recent times by the anti-social activities of what would seem to be a burgeoning band of poo-bag dumpers. In the past week, my wife and I have spotted doggy-deposit bags on both the roadside verges along The Wynd, between the village and the entrance to Wellington Drive, and stretches of woodland walkways in the area. Last night, we noted three dumped bags near the entrance to the Golf Club. And on another occasion, a black bag of doggy detritus was actually abandoned on the very top of a poo bin! Now before our doggy friends launch a tirade of abuse against this self-confessed Coppice curmudgeon, let me stress that I recognise most owners and dog-walkers are highly responsible members of the Wynyard community. Sadly, let’s be honest, a minority are not! Wynyard Matters_16pp A5 Bro_Sep 16.qxp_Layout 1 19/09/2016 09:03 Page 1

Sadly, delight in our four-legged friends has been soured somewhat inrecent times by the anti-social activities of what would seem to be aburgeoning band of poo-bag dumpers.

In the past week, my wife and I have spotted doggy-deposit bags onboth the roadside verges along The Wynd, between the village and theentrance to Wellington Drive, and stretches of woodland walkways inthe area. Last night, we noted three dumped bags near the entrance tothe Golf Club. And on another occasion, a black bag ofdoggy detritus was actually abandoned on the very topof a poo bin!

Now before our doggy friends launch a tirade of abuseagainst this self-confessed Coppice curmudgeon, let mestress that I recognise most owners and dog-walkers arehighly responsible members of the Wynyard community.Sadly, let’s be honest, a minority are not!

It’s a mystery to me why anyone should go to thelength of picking up poo, bagging it and thensimply throwing it into the nearest stretch of grassyverge or hedgerow bottom. (There’s probably agreat PhD opportunity here for some enterprisingpsychology student!).

Something surely needs to be done or it could beargued, with justification, that Wynyard really isgoing to the dogs! Suggested solutions, please, tothe editor - as quickly as possible.

Indian SummerThe weather may not know it but this isofficially Autumn but as I sit at my desk lookingout onto a beautiful sunny afternoon youwould never know this. With this IndianSummer in mind here are a couple of ideasfor quick and easy recipes to allow you plentyof time to chill out and relax in the Autumnsunshine.

A chilled soup is a great way of starting ameal or a quick fix for lunch and this “ChilledPea” soup is perfect. It can be served intraditional bowls or in funky glass jars. Take a450 gram bag of frozen peas and tip theminto a blender. Add 800ml of boiling water

and leave the peas to defrost. Once defrostedtake a tablespoon of peas out of the liquid forgarnish and blitz the remainder with atablespoon of bouillon powder and a handfulof fresh mint. Chill until ready to serve and

serve with the retained peas and a dollop ofcream or crème fraiche.

Try these Thai burgers to follow; tip 500grams of fresh salmon fillet, skinned, into afood processor. Add a tablespoon of red Thaicurry paste, a thumb nail sized piece ofgrated fresh ginger, a teaspoon of soy sauceand chopped coriander to taste. Pulse untilroughly minced. Tip out the mix and shapeinto 4 burgers. Heat a small amount ofvegetable oil in a non-stick frying pan, thenfry the burgers for 4-5 mins on each side, turning until crisp and cooked through.

Meanwhile, use a swivel peeler to peel stripsof carrot and cucumber into a bowl. Toss withwhite wine vinegar and caster sugar until thesugar has dissolved, then toss through thesalad. Divide the salad between 4 plates.Serve with the burgers. These can either beserved hot or cold and the spiciness can beadjusted by just changing the amount of redcurry paste used. I have even cooked thesesuccessfully on the BBQ by using a wire rackto make sure they do not fall through onto thecoals.

Keep your fingers crossed the weatherremains this good and enjoy!

For some years now residents have beenasking for traffic calming measures on TheWynd. Previous Parish Councillors have triedunsuccessfully to achieve an outcome withregard to these safeguards. Unfortunately, aswith many things, it is only when somethingtragic happens that attention turns to safety. In the last few weeks we have had a caraccident on The Wynd involving a youngchild who was seriously injured. Thanks tothe attention of some skilled Wynyardresidents and the Air Ambulance crew thechild survived and we are given tounderstand that they are on the road torecovery. This could easily have been evenmore serious and resulted in death.

At the recent Summer event, and on ourwebsite, we asked residents what their viewswere on traffic calming measures. This surveywas requested by Grindon Parish Councilwho wanted to try once more to get theattention of the local council focussed on thisissue. The survey results indicated that over80% of those surveyed were in favour oftraffic calming measures and the measure ofchoice was “Chicanes”. There wereresidents from all parts of Wynyardrepresented in this survey, including manywho live on The Wynd, and the surveysample size was large enough to be seen asrepresentative.

At the most recent Parish Council meeting itwas decided that the Parish Council wouldonce again approach Stockton BoroughCouncil using the data and the recentaccident as evidence that this subject shouldbe revisited. There is already a costed outplan for Chicanes approved by theHighways team and it is this plan that weare all hoping will now be approved andimplemented. To further demonstrate thestrength of feeling and support for the planGrindon Parish Council voted to offer tocontribute, from the precept funds, asubstantial amount of money towards thecost and John Gardner - our local SBCCouncillor- also committed the remainder ofhis budget towards the cost. Please keep aneye on the Wynyard Residents website (www.wynyardmatters.org ) for furtherupdates on the progress of this proposedplan.

Neighbourhood PlanConsultation

The draft plan is almost complete and WRA will be out and about to get yourviews. Consultation on the policies is very important and we need to reach asmany residents as possible. Please look out for the flyer that will be comingthrough your door telling what day and time the mobile display will be in yourstreet. We will come out at weekends to maximise the number of people whocan participate.

WRA members will knock on your door when it is your day, giving advancewarning of the displays approach. You will be given a questionnaire on the planto fill in and can look at the policies in the van and talk to members of theneighbourhood plan sub committee who will try to answer your questions.

You can fill in the questionnaire in the comfort of your own home and drop it off atone of the advertised dropping off points. It is very important you return the formas this provides evidence for the government inspector that consultation withresidents has taken place. It adds weight and value to the plan and it is essentialthat you feel the plan reflects your wishes for how Wynyard will develop, anycomments you make will be included in the final plan report.

There will also be open, static consultations, one for businesses within WynyardPark and two for residents. The open sessions for residents will also be advertisedon the flyer, but do try to come to the mobile event as this reduces pressure on theopen consultations.

The people have spoken!!At the recent Summer event we asked residents to complete a survey whichidentified which of a number of options on offer they would like to see asimprovements to Wynyard. The purpose of the survey was to report back toWynyard Estate Services how the residents would like any surplus from theirannual fees spent. WES have committed to improving the estate but wanted someguidance from residents on what their priorities were. Well you have voted andthe results are in. The top items that residents wanted to see were; a communityvenue, a children’s play park (for small children) and bollards/verge protectors toprevent cars and vans churning up the grass verges. These results will bediscussed with WES as soon as possible and a plan of work with realistictimescales agreed. Please look out for updates on the website.

However, due to the long term nature of achieving the establishment of acommunity venue the residents’ association have decided to make a start on thisright away. We are in discussion with Wes about the allocation of suitable landfor a venue and the first step to achieving this is to draw up plans and have theseapproved by the local council. To this end we are seeking an Architect….preferably one who will work Pro Bono who would assist us with the plans andplanning application. We know that funding for the build and outfitting of such avenue will be costly so the more work we can get done for nothing the better. Ifanyone is willing to help in any way with this project please contact us via thewebsite at www.wynyardmatters.org.

Another aspect of the survey conducted asked for residents to indicate if theywould support the establishment of a GP Surgery on Wynyard and if happy to doso how many individuals would use this facility. The results were overwhelminglyin favour of this. The results have now been passed along to WES who will bedealing with this as part of the overall development of the estate.

What A Great Day!The Wynyard Summer Event, held on the lawnsaround the village duck pond, was a great success. We could not have asked for better weather and wegot a great crowd. The tombola almost sold out andthe free face painting, bouncy castle and ice creamwent down well with children and parents.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported usand those who baked for the cake stall or donatedprizes.

The results of the WRA survey are recorded in variousarticles throughout this magazine.

The whole day raised £621.06 for village fundstowards building a village hall.

The very enjoyable Wynyard Trail was won outrightwith 31 out of 32 points but there was a tie forsecond place on 28 points, so the two remainingprizes were awarded by lottery. Sorry if you werenot a winner, but well done to all who attempted thetesting course.

The raffle results are as follows:1st Prize Hand made quilt 2232nd Prize Golf club - round golf 4 people 1663rd Prize Hand baked cake 1984th Prize Vouchers for Therapy 250

The sponsor present on the day was Red HouseSchool who brought their own stand and craft tableand gave prizes for the Wynyard trail. Othersponsors were Grindon Parish Council and TaylorWimpey who both gave cash donations. WynyardEstate Services kindly cordoned off the duck pondfor us. Many thanks also to those who donated theprizes for the raffle – especially Rachel who madethe fabulous Strawberry Mousse cake, a labour oflove if ever there was one!

Feedback from the event has been very good and we look forward to doing it allagain next year.
