New U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo underscored the need

for unity in the Gulf during a brief visit to the Saudi capital yesterday as Washington aims to muster support among allies for new sanctions against Iran.

Pompeo reassured Saudi Arabia that the United States would abandon the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, reached under President Donald Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama, unless there is an agreement in talks with European partners to improve it to make sure the Islamic Republic never possesses a nuclear weapons.

“Iran destabilises this entire region,” Pompeo said in a joint press conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

“It supports proxy militias and terrorist groups. It is an arms dealer to the Houthi rebels in Yemen. It supports the murderous Assad regime (in Syria) as well,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo also addressed the rift between some Gulf countries and Qatar: “Gulf unity is necessary and we need to achieve it.”

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al

Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, yesterday welcomed this year’s recipients of the Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Programme (CPISP), at Riffa Palace.

HRH the Crown Prince highlighted the importance of investing in Bahrain’s youth to help drive sustainable development and secure future prosperity. HRH the Crown Prince pointed out that young people are Bahrain’s greatest source of future wealth, noting the important role they play within the Kingdom’s ongoing comprehensive development programme, led by His Majesty King Hamad.

HRH the Crown Prince went on to detail the significant achievements of the CPISP, and explained that the programme, now in its 19th iteration, continues to deliver educational opportunities at world-class institutions for exceptional Bahraini students.

Later, HRH the Crown Prince expressed his gratitude to all the organisations that continue to support the work and objectives of the CPISP and

extended his congratulations to the students for meeting the rigorous standards of the Scholarship Programme application process.

HRH the Crown Prince also congratulated the students’ parents, praising the unwavering support and commitment they had already demonstrated to their children’s educational development. HRH the Crown Prince also extended his thanks and appreciation to the staff of the CPISP for the important role they play liaising with internationally renowned organisations and supporting the students from enrolment through to graduation.

The 2018 scholarship recipients were selected from

among 400 Bahraini students from domestic governmental and private schools, as well as applicants studying overseas. The final selection criteria included their Grade Point Average, as well as the results of IELTS and SAT examinations, leadership training, and a critical thinking course, which were organized by the CPISP as part of the candidacy training last year.

The CPISP offers scholarship recipients the opportunity to choose their own fields of study at any university they gain acceptance to. The Programme has awarded a total of 166 university scholarships to outstanding Bahraini students since its establishment in 1999 by HRH the Crown Prince.

The Public Prosecution has objected against the appeal

of a stepmother who was recently sentenced to seven years of imprisonment for torturing her nine-year-old stepdaughter to death, it was announced yesterday.

Family and Child Prosecution Chief Attorney Amina Isa explained that the woman appealed against the verdict issued by the Fourth Criminal Court on April 11, while the second defendant, the father of the victim, was acquitted. Isa confirmed that the stepmother’s appeal will be reviewed by the First

Supreme Criminal Court of Appeal on May 14.

As reported earlier on DT News, the case was reported in Hidd in Muharraq Governorate in August, 2016. The Bahraini father informed the police that his daughter, Zahra, has been injured after falling in the bathroom of their house.

According to the official coroner’s report, multiple injuries that occurred on different occasions were detected on the girl’s corpse and some of them were fresh and simultaneous to the time of death. Both the father and his 29-year-old wife pleaded not guilty before judges.

The Public Prosecution yesterday ordered the detention of two street

racers one day after they were arrested by the General Directorate of Traffic for illegal racing on a vital highway near Riffa.

This was confirmed in a statement issued here yesterday by Traffic Prosecution Chief Attorney Hassan Al Buali, who clarified that the drivers will remain in custody pending further investigations and will stand before the judges today.

Al Buali said the two drivers were caught on tape while racing on Istiqlal Highway on Friday. “Investigations led to the identity of the drivers who were seen in a video posted online while racing on the highway. They both confessed to their crime in the interrogation. They will be referred to the concerned criminal court on April 30 for the charges of illegal racing on a public road, over-speeding and endangering lives and properties,” Al Buali stated.

The General Directorate of Traffic announced the arrest of the drivers on Saturday and advised parents in a statement to monitor the behaviours of their children, adding that the arrest comes within the General Directorate’s duties to curb all violations that disturb citizens and residents.

Dime World, an Over The Top (OTT) technology

that will give users inexpensive data connectivity while roaming in other countries was launched yesterday.

The technology, a sticker that can be pasted on a sim-card, will provide inexpensive internet packages while traveling in other countries. The packages can be purchased via the Dime World App. Dime World also comes in a second form - as an independent sim card.

The technology was unveiled by the newly launched company Dime Global during an event at InterContinental Regency Bahrain yesterday.

“Dime world is based on a technology called an OTT sim-card, it is something that will be stuck on to a regular simcard. It will give you local connectivity where ever you travel. Bahrain is the first country to receive dime-world, we will launch it in other countries soon. We are eager to collaborate with all of the three telecom operators in Bahrain,” Dime Global CEO AbdulAziz Qamber told DT News.

“As of now the technology supports internet data but not

yet phone calls, this means you can go to another country and continue to have local connectivity. However, you can still make calls through our app or you can make calls from an application such as Whatsapp,” he said.

“Dime World is our solution to the expensive roaming charges that the operators are charging on data connectivity. With this service you can have data connectivity in more than 70 countries in the world,” he added.

He was speaking to DT News on the sidelines of the event yesterday which was held to celebrate the first Anniversary of Dime Bahrain and the launch of Dime Global. The event was held under the patronage of Minister of Transport and

Communications Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed. During the event, World renowned Digital Marketing expert, Neal Schaffer gave a key note speech on digital transformation.

Speaking about the launch of Dime Global Qamber added, “Today we are launching in four different regions. Now we exist as a Bahraini group in Hong Kong, Philippines, London and in Bahrain. We want to show the rest of the world that Bahrain is becoming a global model for OTT solutions.”

He said that the company is also launching ‘Dime Connect’, “It is a solution for telecom operators who does not have the OTT on their communication platform. What we launch is something that is very different from the 52 of competitors.”

In the last few years, we are witnessing the cover page stories of many publications like Time,

Harvard Business Review, Nature, and Economist highlight the digital era as we read titles like “Data deluge, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and 4th Industrial Revolution”. It is estimated that there is an exponential growth of data which amounts to 43 trillion of gigabytes by 2020, this figure is 300 times more than 2005. Moreover, the cost of poor data in the US is estimated to amount to about $3.1 trillion per year. This is a testimony that we live in a new digital era where Big data is inducing a disruption and is forcing us to re-think business model and architecture. However, the volume, velocity and variety of Big Data is characterized by veracity which is the uncertainty in data that is likely to influence economy and society.

Technology is shaping our economy and society in an unprecedented manner but the challenge is defined by Jamie Bartlett in his recent book titled “The People Versus Tech” in which he argues that democracy and technology are two different “species” and are in bitter conflict. Specifically, democracy is based on hierarchy and analogue while technology is founded on decentralized norms and digital systems. Hence, the challenge is to harness technology to serve democracy or alternatively end up in a situation that technology

disrupts governments and democracy. The cyberspace is mismatched with the real physical world which creates tension as articulated by Barlow’s Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace in which he said “Governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed. You have neither solicited nor received ours”.

However, technology can empower good governance as the model of Open

Government proposed by Barak Obama. This model can contribute to support transparency a as manifested in open data

sources (data.gov). This open data to all citizens improves services in health and transport by using google maps and help in many domains like on-line education, prevention of epidemics, job search and e-marketing.

The key features of democracy are underpinned by ideal of clear rights, distributed powers and informed debate. Moreover, democracy is founded on a set of pillars which are active citizens, a shared culture, free elections, stakeholder equality, competitive economy and trust in authority. On the other hand, although technology offers access to information and connects people but it enables people to form new form of “digital tribes” that can manipulate public opinion. Algorithms are creating new norms and knowledge that are sources of power. The fear is that the emergence of robots and smart machines may limit human moral judgment and they will create mass unemployment which will disrupt society. How can we protect democracy from technology? A few key ideas may contribute to save democracy which include a simple recipe; i.e., own your opinion and develop an independent-mind and have moral autonomy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched the

Digital Transformation Project for Unified Communications Infrastructure. The launch, in cooperation with Avaya and Batelco, is part of the ongoing efforts to develop the use of technology and keep up with the digital age.

The ministry said it seeks to enhance communication between its missions and citizens abroad through keeping its employees connected 24 hours a day to provide the best levels of service that will ensure the safety of citizens and residents of Bahrain abroad, while reducing operational costs at the same time.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Dr. Shaikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa affirmed the completion of the first phase of the digital transformation project, noting that the project, supervised by Batelco to install the latest unified communications solutions in cooperation with Avaya company, covers the main headquarters of the

ministry as well as Bahrain embassies in the Middle East.

Dr. Shaikha Rana stressed that this project comes as part of the ongoing efforts of the ministry in the digital field to meet the goals of Bahrain Vision 2030, adding that it also builds on the Bahraini diplomatic achievements of the Kingdom under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

Dr. Shaikha Rana noted the keenness of Foreign Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa to develop projects, highlighting his constant follow up on the efforts of the Ministry in coordination with companies and institutions.

U.S-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)

said yesterday they expelled Syrian troops that briefly took control of a string of villages in oil rich areas east of the Euphrates river near the Iraqi border.

SDF forces led by the Kurdish YPG militia said they had waged a counter-attack against Syrian troops it said were backed by Russian forces, adding they were driven “far away” from four villages they had seized earlier in the day.

“Our forces regained the initiative,” their statement said.

It did not say if the U.S. coalition took part in the operation. Washington has a strong military presence in the area in eastern Syria which holds the bulk of the country’s oil and gas reserves, according to regional diplomatic sources.

A Western diplomatic source told Reuters U.S. coalition jets from bases in northern Syria hit the attacking forces which were believed to include Iranian-backed militias

operating in Deir al Zor area.Iranian-backed forces led by

Iraqi and Lebanese Hezbolah Shi’ite militias played a major role in defeating the militants last year in eastern Syria.

A source in SDF also

confirmed coalition forced had intervened without elaborating.

Earlier, the Syrian army said it had captured a string of villages east of the Euphrates near the border with Iraq held by Kurdish-led forces, state

television said. It gave no explanation for the move.

The U.S.-backed proxy forces spearheaded by the YPG since last year control much of the territory east of the Euphrates in Deir al-Zor

province as part of a major aerial and ground campaign led by the Pentagon that drove Islamic State militants from eastern Syria and their former de facto capital Raqqa.

The Russian-backed Syrian

army has rarely clashed with SDF forces in its campaign against Islamic State and had kept away from their areas east of the Euphrates, focusing on regaining territory from the militants west of the river.

There have been elaborate “deconfliction lines” separating the coalition forces on the eastern side of the river from the Russian and Iranian backed forces on the western side to prevent clashes, U.S army officials and defence analysts say.

In February, U.S. airstrikes killed and wounded hundreds of pro-government forces including Russian paramilitary contractors advancing near the eastern city of Deir al-Zor towards one of the largest gas fields in the hands of U.S.-backed forces.

Before the announcement that the Syrian army had taken control of the villages, the SDF said they were engaged in heavy clashes with Syrian army troops on the outskirts of the village of Janin near the Euphrates. (Reuters)

A Russian-made military cargo plane crashed

yesterday afternoon near an oil field in southern Libya, killing three people on board, according to a local official.

“Shortly after taking off from the runway of the oil field, the plane fell suddenly and crashed in a desert area where there is no civilian or oil sites,” an official in Al-Sharara oil field told Xinhua.

“The plane was on a mission to transport goods and supplies to the field workers. According to preliminary information, only a crew consisting of a pilot

and assistants were on board,” the official added.

The official also said the plane was headed to M’etiga airbase in Libyan capital Tripoli, confirming that three crew members are dead and fate of the fourth member has remained been unknown so far.

Al-Sharara is the largest oil field in Libya, producing 270,000 barrels of oil per day, more than a quarter of Libya’s daily oil production.

The oil field was reopened in December 2016, after being closed by the oil installations guards for more than two years. (Xinhua)

Voting in Lebanon’s first parliamentary polls in

almost a decade kicked off in Australia yesterday with thousands of people casting their ballots in the historic election.

Some 12,000 members of Australia’s Lebanese community are registered to vote, Lebanon’s embassy in Canberra said, a week before the May 6 election that will carve out the country’s political and economic trajectory.

“It’s a special day today, it’s democracy day. As you can see everyone is happy here,” Nazih Keir, a 44-year-old member of the Lebanese Muslim community in Sydney, told AFP at a polling station next to the huge Lakemba Mosque.

“We’ve been now from 2009 with no election -- nine years and a bit more -- and it is the first time in Australia, that is why we are so happy to get involved in the election in Lebanon and we hope that

everyone gets what he wants.”The Middle Eastern country

has not held a parliamentary poll since 2009 and a new law now allows Lebanese living abroad to vote for the first time since independence in 1943.

With an estimated community of 230,000 -- which includes Lebanon-born migrants and their families -- Australia is among the largest diaspora groups outside of the

Americas.“It is a good feeling for us

to feel like we are involved in making a decision in Lebanon and we feel that we can make changes,” said Danny Gea Gea, 48, a Christian member of the Lebanese community.

But he also complained about the voting process.

“Lots of people coming here, they can’t find their name (on the register) and they are upset

and angry,” he said.People were casting their

vote for one list of candidates running in their Lebanese district of origin, under a proportional list-based system.

They were also choosing one candidate on a list of parliamentary hopefuls representing each religious community in that district under a strict quota system.

Half of the seats in Lebanon’s parliament are reserved for Christians and the other half for Muslims.

After successive waves of emigration from the 19th century to the 1975-1990 civil war, some estimates say Lebanon’s extended diaspora has bloated to a whopping 12 million, but most no longer have citizenship.

Some 116 polling stations in Lebanese embassies and consulates in 39 countries are set up to vote, but only an estimated 82,900 people have registered to take part. (AFP)

Davao City

President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday made clear his

stance that Kuwait deployment ban stays permanently in the wake of a diplomatic spat between the Philippines and the Gulf state.

“No. The ban stays permanently. There will be no more recruitment for -- especially domestic helpers,” the President said.

This was the President’s declaration in a press briefing at Davao International Airport upon his arrival here at past 1 a.m. Sunday from Singapore, where he attended the 32nd ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting.

He also asked those remaining in the Gulf state

to come home as they are no longer needed in Kuwait. An estimated 260,000 OFWs presently work in Kuwait, including 700 Filipinos now facing different charges and have sought refuge in the embassy shelter.

Of the total number of Filipinos there, about 150,000 are household service workers.

Duterte vowed to get back all those who want to come home using available funds or the funds given by China. If money is not enough, Duterte said he would use emergency funds. “To me this is a calamity,” he told reporters.

“Please come home. Even if we are poor, we will still survive,” he said.

He assured there are available jobs here with the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program.

The President said the country is already short of professional and skilled workers for the construction industry. Duterte also looks forward to China’s offer of opening jobs for Filipinos as English language teachers.

He further directed responsible government agencies to start the mobilization immediately.

For the Filipino professionals in Kuwait who wish to stay, Duterte said there would be no problem but reminded them to always cherish and nurture patriotism.

For household service workers whose employers want them to leave, Duterte said, “Please come home. Your government will do its best to help your return and resettle. But I appeal to your sense of patriotism and love of country and family.”

For household workers whose employers want them to stay, the President asked them to choose the better option. “All I ask is for employers to treat Filipinos the humanity they deserve,” he said.

Duterte stressed the good relations of the Philippines and Kuwait. However, he said current developments test both countries commitment to work together. (PNA)

Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia

Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed

bin Salman attended the ground-breaking ceremony on Saturday of a vast entertainment resort that is at the heart of an ambitious strategy to open the economy and ease social restrictions.

Qiddiya, about an hour’s drive from Riyadh, is being built on a 334 sq km (8,400-acre) site, making it 2-1/2 times the size of Disney World.

It will include a Six Flags theme park, water parks, motor sports, cultural events, and vacation homes. A spokesman

said Qiddiya expects to attract 1.5 million visitors annually when the first phase opens in 2022.

Local media have reported the cost of the infrastructure alone would reach up to 30 billion riyals ($8 bln) and the project would eventually be worth tens of billions of riyals.

Little more than a week after Saudi Arabia opened its first cinema after a nearly four-decade ban, the author of the reforms, Prince Mohammed, and his father attended the lavish launch ceremony, which featured a

live orchestra, fireworks and a vocal performance praising both leaders.

“Today, we invite investors, creators, and operators from around the world to explore what a one-of-a-kind project like Qiddiya has to offer,” CEO Michael Reininger told government officials, foreign dignitaries and businessmen gathered in a temporary open-air auditorium.

“We will seek the best to help us, as we invent a new entertainment experience for all residents and visitors to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Reininger told Reuters that

Qiddiya was seeking a broad range of financing from local and international sources, with bonds, direct investment and other tools to supplement the majority contribution from the main Saudi sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

PIF has two other major initiatives: NEOM - a $500 billion business and industrial zone extending into Egypt and Jordan - and a Red Sea project, which includes a nature reserve, diving in coral reefs and heritage sites on about 50 islands.

Reininger would not specify

the expected investment value for Qiddiya except to describe it as “incredibly sizeable”.

Some 50 people are directly employed by Qiddiya, with hundreds more contracted as local suppliers and global advisors. Those numbers are expected to reach 55,000 by 2022.

The project aims to be the centre of entertainment, cultural and sports activity in the country.

With two-thirds of the population under 35 and few local entertainment offerings, many Saudis flock to nearby Bahrain or Dubai seeking fun

at the weekends. The state wants to secure up to a quarter of the $20 billion spent on entertainment overseas each year.

“Capturing as much of (those expenditures) as I possibly can is the objective and at the same time creating a bigger pie so that I can get the disproportionate share of that bigger pie that we create at the same time,” Reininger said.

“We’re not just going to go around the world, find things and copy them. We’re going to innovate and we’re going to stay ahead of the curve.” (Reuters)

Scottish actress Karen Gillan’s acting career set her up to be a good director. The 30-year-old star knows she can offer a “safe” environment for

actors, which she says is what they are after. She said: “I’ve just worked with so many directors as an actress, so I know

exactly what I want from a director. So I was able to give that to the actors ... So, they want an environment that is safe so that they can offer up their ideas and take risks, like artistically. And not be scared that they’re going to get laughed at or shut down, which, it happens.” (femalefirst.co.uk)

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg credits late actor Robin Williams for helping him get through the ‘trauma’ of filming ‘Schindler’s List’.

According to a report, the ‘Lincoln’ filmmaker and Williams became close after they worked together on 1991’s ‘Hook’ and when Spielberg took on

the emotional task of directing ‘Schindler’s List’ which was about German businessman Oskar Schindler, who is credited with saving 1,200 Jews during

the Holocaust, Williams was there to comfort his friend by performing stand-up over the phone.

“Robin called me,” Spielberg said at a film festival, screening of the film on Thursday.

“Robin knew what I was going through. Once a week he called me on schedule. He knew exactly what time it was in Poland, what time it

was in San Francisco... and he would do 15 minutes of stand-up on the phone, and I would laugh hysterically because I had to release so much,” said Spielberg. (IANS)

A contract of some kind, perhaps involving the home, might need some careful consideration today. You could find it a little difficult to understand, as it could be full of fine print and legalese. Don’t be afraid to ask someone with a little more savvy to explain what you’re trying to read. It’s important that you know all the ins and outs before signing anything.

You might pick up some rather disturbing thoughts from a friend, neighbour, or relative. This person could be upset over something and not communicating his or her feelings. It isn’t appropriate to try to coax this person into sharing with you now. They aren’t upset with you, but they might be if you push! Back off and let this person come to terms with the problem.

Some gossip about a friend could reach your ears today, and it might seem a bit shocking at first. Money could be involved. However, don’t accept what you hear at face value. Whoever got the rumor going is apt to be less concerned with the truth than serving a personal agenda. Call your friend and try to learn the facts without prying.

Today you might find yourself the centre of attention. Friends could ask for some information they know you have. It might involve telling a story or giving practical advice. Whatever it is, you might find it difficult to explain without going into some pretty heavy detail. You can do it! Talk slowly and let what you have to say unfold on its own.

Today you might take up some sort of occult study, such as astrology, numerology, or alchemy that seems like Greek to you at first. As a result, you could be tempted to abandon it. Don’t! Once you get past the jargon, you’ll probably find it fascinating. Keep a dictionary handy, and don’t worry if you have to go over something several times.

A friend might be in such a dour mood that you wonder if this is the same person you know and love. During the day you might be tempted to try to analyse what’s going on, but this is apt to raise more questions than answers. Probably this is a case of too many problems hitting your friend at once. Don’t pry, but make sure your friend knows you’re there if needed.

A friend or romantic partner might need your advice, and want to discuss a few things that you don’t really understand. This could concern this person’s job, which involves a lot of technicalities with which you’re unfamiliar. Don’t be afraid to stop occasionally and ask for an explanation. If you’re going to be of any help, you have to have some idea.

Today you might read a book on exercise or nutrition that seems a bit unsettling. According to the book, you’re doing everything wrong! Remember that what the author is probably outlining is a certain practice that worked for him or her. Everyone is different. Don’t change your habits for practices that don’t feel right. Consult a professional if you’re still concerned.

Paperwork involving money could be a real drag for you today. You’ll have to get it done, but you’d rather be elsewhere. It might also seem a little confusing. If you get to it early and concentrate, you should finish it quickly and then get on to what you want to do. After a morning of intense, tedious work, you’ll probably be ready for some entertainment like a movie or sports event.

Memories and emotions welling up from the past might excite your creative impulses today. You may not quite be able to understand what all of this means, but the pictures should keep coming to you nonetheless. It might be a good idea to take some notes, even though you might not comprehend all you write.

A subject you’re researching, perhaps for a class or workshop, might prove more difficult than you expected. The resources you consult might be very scholarly and thus difficult to read. If you can’t find anything comprehensible, try to rent or buy a video on the subject. It’s more important to understand the material than force yourself to approach it in the accepted scholarly manner.A neighbour or relative might volunteer to help you with some chores around the house, but you could sense that his or her heart isn’t in it. This person is probably thinking about things and just needs some kind words and a little advice. Just accept that even though you have help, you’ll probably end up doing most of the work yourself.

Manila

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said

yesterday North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom he had previously called a “fool”, is now the “hero of everybody”, after Kim pledged to work with Seoul for “complete denuclearisation” of the peninsula.

Duterte said he would “congratulate” Kim, who just became his “idol”, if he gets a chance to meet him. He said he would tell the North Korean leader “I admire you. You know how to time (your moves)”.

“For all of the time, he was pictured to be the bad boy of the community. With one

masterstroke, he is now the hero of everybody,” Duterte said when asked to comment on the meeting between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in during a news conference after he returned from an ASEAN summit in Singapore.

“He appear to be amiable, jolly good fellow, and very accommodating,” Duterte said of Kim.

Duterte has more than once criticised Kim over his nuclear ambitions. In April last year he questioned his sanity and urged the United States to show restraint and not be baited by a man who “wants to end the world”. (Reuters)

The tree, an oak sapling from the site of a pivotal first world war battle involving the US marines, was a gift presented by the French president as part of his state visit to Washington.

In a tweet, Macron said: “100 years ago, American soldiers fought in France, in Belleau to defend our

freedom. This oak tree (my gift to [Trump]) will be a reminder at the White House of these ties that bind us.”

Macron and Trump planted it on Monday, using golden shovels and with wives Brigitte Macron and Melania Trump looking on.

The planting ceremony prompted speculation on social media, particularly about whether the French president had been “trolling” Trump over his environmental policies and withdrawal from the Paris climate accord. (The Guardian)

Seoul

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he

would move the country’s clocks 30 minutes forward to unify with the South’s time zone as a conciliatory gesture after Friday’s inter-Korean summit, Seoul said yesterday.

The two countries on the divided peninsula have had different time zones since 2015 when the North suddenly changed its standard time to 30 minutes behind the South.

Pyongyang cited a

nationalistic rationale, saying it would return the North to the time zone used before Japan’s 1910-45 colonial

rule of the peninsula to mark the 70th anniversary of its liberation from Tokyo. (AFP)

Kim to shut nuke site

Seoul

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told his

South Korean counterpart at their historic summit that he would be willing to give up his nuclear weapons if the U.S. commits to a formal end to the Korean War and a pledge not to attack the North, Seoul officials said yesterday.

Kim also vowed during his meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday to shut down the North’s nuclear test site in May and disclose the process to experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States, Seoul’s presidential office said.

While there are lingering questions about whether North Korea will ever decide to fully relinquish its nukes as it heads into negotiations with the U.S., Kim’s comments amount to the North’s most specific acknowledgement yet that “denuclearization” would

constitute surrendering its weapons.

U.S. national security adviser John Bolton reacted coolly to word that Kim would abandon his weapons if the United States pledged not to invade.

Asked on CBS’ “Face the Nation” whether the U.S. would make such a promise, Bolton said: “Well, we’ve heard this before. This is — the North Korean propaganda playbook is an infinitely rich resource.”

“What we want to see from them is evidence that it’s real and not just rhetoric,” he added.

Seoul officials, who have shuttled between Pyongyang and Washington to broker talks between Kim and President Donald Trump that are expected in May or June, said Kim has expressed genuine interest in dealing away his nuclear weapons.

But there has been skepticism because North

Korea for decades has been pushing a concept of “denuclearization” that bears no resemblance to the American definition. The North has long vowed to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its 28,500 troops from South Korea and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

During their summit at a truce village on the border, Moon and Kim promised to work toward the “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula but made no references to verification or timetables.

Kim also expressed optimism about his meeting with Trump, Moon’s spokesman Yoon Young-chan said.

“Once we start talking, the United States will know that I am not a person to launch nuclear weapons at South Korea, the Pacific or the United States,” Kim said, according to Yoon. (AP)

Celtic secure 7th Premiership titleCeltic Park

Celtic secured their seventh consecutive Premiership title with

a chastening defeat of Old Firm rivals Rangers.

The defending champions needed to win at Celtic Park to retain their crown, and they swept the visitors aside.

Odsonne Edouard, with two, and James Forrest established a comfortable half-time lead.

Tom Rogic and Callum McGregor rounded off the scoring after the break as Celtic confirmed their dominance.

Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick made three excellent second-half saves to prevent the scoreline becoming even more galling for the Ibrox side.

The victory leaves Celtic on the brink of the historic achievement of winning back-to-back trebles, with Motherwell their opponents in the Scottish Cup final, having already beaten the Fir Park side in the League Cup final last November.

Celtic have not strutted their way through the entire league season as they did last time, the title largely being

won in third gear. When they have been of a mind to reach for fourth and fifth gear, however, they have been formidable - and this was one of those days.

Even from the first moments, when they forced three corners in the opening three minutes, there was an irresistible sense of a shellacking in the offing.

This was a rout to end all routs. Only Alnwick kept it to five - the goalkeeper was the visitors’ best player. In truth, he was their only player. (BBC) Celtic team celebrate victory

Barcelona

World number one Rafael Nadal produced an

imperious display to win his 11th Barcelona Open title with a 6-2 6-1 win over Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nadal, 31, who won his 400th clay-court match to reach the final, claimed two rapid breaks to take the first set in 40 minutes against the 19-year-old.

World number 63 Tsitsipas, playing the Spaniard for the first time, succumbed in 77 minutes.

Nadal has won 19 successive matches, and 46 consecutive sets, on clay.

After winning his 11th Monte Carlo title last weekend, this was his 55th title on clay - and the 77th overall in his illustrious career.

The crowd were later shown a compilation of Nadal’s successes in the event.

He said: “It was emotional. I could never have dreamed of having a career like this.

“It is truly special to play here on this court. I really appreciate the support and hope it will happen for many more years.”

Light drizzle interrupted the match in the first and second games and Tsitsipas, who will become the first Greek player to break into the world top 50, held to love in his opening service game.

But that proved to be as good as it would get for the the youngest Barcelona finalist since Nadal in 2005.

Tsitsipas beat world number seven Dominic Thiem and world number 10 David Goffin and did not drop a set en route to Sunday’s showpiece, but committed 15 unforced errors in the first set alone. (BBC)

Hami wins dramatic F1 race in Baku

Baku

Lewis Hamilton celebrated one of the luckiest wins of his career

yesterday after a crash-strewn and chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix that catapulted him into the lead of the Formula One world championship.

The surprise victory, after team mate Valtteri Bottas suffered a puncture with three laps left while

leading, ended a six race drought for the four times champion

dating back to last October. It was the first victory of

the season for champions Mercedes.

In a race where the safety car again played a major

part, with a series of crashes and smashes, Kimi Raikkonen

finished second for Ferrari while Mexican Sergio

Perez was third for Force India.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who had led

the championship before Baku

and looked to be on course

for a 50th career win

and third out of four this s e a s o n , started on p o l e

position but f i n i s h e d fourth.

Hamilton now has 70 points to Vettel’s 66.

Red Bull’s Australian Daniel Ricciardo, last year’s winner in Baku and also in

China two weekends ago, smashed into the back of team mate Max Verstappen in a lap 40 collision that ended the race for both of them.

“It was quite an emotional race. Valtteri did an exceptional job and deserved to win, Sebastian also did a great job so it feels a bit odd to be up here,” commented Hamilton on the podium.

“Definitely an untidy race for me.”

The Briton had started on the front row for the first time since he took pole in the Australian season-opener but never looked like winning until Lady Luck removed both Vettel and Bottas from the equation.

“It was such a crazy race, such an exciting race...to come out with a win, I feel incredibly grateful,” said Hamilton, who went to commiserate with Bottas afterwards.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz was fifth for Renault with Monegasque rookie Charles Leclerc sixth for Sauber, his first points in Formula One.

“It felt like a win, I’m on a cloud now, it has been an amazing race,” said Leclerc.

New Zealander Brendon Hartley was also celebrating his first point after taking 10th for Toro Rosso.

McLaren, who had their worst qualifying of the season on Saturday, ended up with a double points finish — Fernando Alonso seventh and Stoffel Vandoorne ninth.

Canadian teenager Lance Stroll, third in Baku last year, finished eighth to give struggling former champions Williams their first points of the year. Only 13 cars finished the race. (Reuters)

Karolia Pliskova retains Stuttgart titleStuttgart

Karolina Pliskova won her first title of the year yesterday with

a 7-6(2) 6-4 victory over American CoCo Vandeweghe in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

The dominant Czech fifth seed fired 11 aces and wrapped up the match in an hour and 56 minutes to halt Vandeweghe’s fine run in the claycourt tournament at Stuttgart.

The 26-year-old Vandeweghe beat world number one Simona Halep and U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens earlier in the tournament but could not find a way past Pliskova.

“It’s the best atmosphere to play in Germany,” Pliskova said after the match. “I want to thank my

team. I think we had a great week and without them I would not have the trophy.”

Former world number one Pliskova trailed 2-0 in the tiebreak at the end of a tight first set but reeled off seven points in a row for an early advantage in the contest.

After Vandeweghe called for the trainer following a tumble early in the second set, Pliskova raised her level and broke her bruised opponent’s serve to go up 3-2.

Pliskova saved a breakpoint in the next game to increase her lead. She then broke Vandeweghe again to make it 5-2 before the American attempted a late fightback with a break of her own. (Eurosport)

Cecchinato claims maiden ATP titleHungary

Italy’s Marco Cecchinato claimed his maiden ATP Tour title with a 7-5 6-4 victory over John Millman

in the Hungarian Open final yesterday.Cecchinato converted four out of eight break

points to beat his Australian opponent in an hour 47 minutes. The world number 92 became the first lucky loser to win a title since Leonardo Mayer triumphed in Hamburg last July.

“I lost Sunday (in qualifying) and now I won the tournament. It’s amazing for me,” the 25-year-old Cecchinato said. “Maybe it’s a dream, I don’t know.”

Cecchinato broke Millman early in the first set to race into a 4-2 lead, but the 28-year-old Australian dragged himself back into the match by winning the next three games.

Cecchinato saved a set point on his serve while trailing 5-4 before regaining his composure to take the first set.

Millman took a 4-1 lead in the second but Cecchinato fought back in style to claim victory. (Reuters)Pliskova celebrating with the trophy

Roglic clinches Tour de Romandie

Pascal Ackermann takes final stage victoryGeneva

Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) has won the overall classification at

the Tour de Romandie, beating Team Sky’s Egan Bernal to take the title. Meanwhile, Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) took victory ahead of Michael Morkov (Quick-Step Floors) in a sprint finish in Geneva on the final day of racing.

Roglic had all but sealed his overall success on Saturday’s queen stage when he eked out a couple of extra seconds over Bernal by beating him in the sprint to the line.

The final stage did not have the terrain to really test the general classification riders, but the LottoNL-Jumbo rider still had to keep an eye on his rival, particularly in the final when it looked like Bernal might try something before moving off in the final kilometre.

As the sprinters battled it out for victory, Roglic eased over the line to take the title by eight seconds over Bernal.

“I think we are all really happy with this win. With the whole team I think that we showed we are really strong, we have really strong guys and it was a pleasure to work with them and to win in the end,” said Roglic.

Ackermann had been relatively anonymous throughout the Tour de Romandie as he battled to hang on in the mountains. With many sprinters heading home after missing the time cut in Friday’s time trial, the German

was one of the major favourites for success on the last day of racing. He was given an inch-perfect lead-out by Rudiger Selig and backed that up with a powerful sprint to take his first win of the season. (Cyclingnews)
