Dear Parents, As winter turns to spring, and spring to summer, so too does the 25-acre Poly Prep campus transform at the conclusion of the academic year. Each June, our campus becomes a playground for the body and a learning ground for the mind. Consistent with our school’s mission, Poly Prep Summer is filled with choices rich in pursuits to grow the mind, body, and character of our summer community — your children. This year, we have designed a summer for your child to remember. Our customizable program begins in June and runs for 11 weeks. Whether your child is perfecting his forehand on our new world-class squash courts, thinking strategically about her next move in chess camp, or handbuilding a vase in our day camp ceramics elective, our experienced, caring, and energetic team of faculty, coaches, and counselors will be there to help your child flourish. We go above and beyond to provide child-centered opportunities in a nurturing environment that allow campers to feel challenged while safe and having fun. Our leadership team and staff of over 200 responsible and skilled individuals have been selected for their outstanding talents — their experience in the field of education, their ability to establish warm relationships with children, and their skills at promoting the physical, social, and emotional growth and wellness of your child. They use our state-of-the-art facilities as a backdrop for fostering laughter, learning, friendship, and smiles. We hope you will consider joining us this summer. We cannot wait to make a positive difference for you and your child. Carrie Quigley

How do we ensure a positive Summer Experience for all campers?

CAMP GROUPSOur camp community has many layers, all of which support campers in feeling connected to their Summer Experience. Campers are divided into age-leveled divisions, allowing them to participate in developmentally appropriate games and activities. Each camper is also a member of a smaller camp group that is staffed by a team of energetic and compassionate counselors who act as role models, encouraging campers to act in a kind and responsible manner, and challenging them to develop their individual strengths each day.

TEAM TIMECampers assemble each morning and afternoon with their group and counseling team to participate in games, activities, and discussions that help them interact, build community, and feel comfortable engaging throughout the day. These organized gatherings combine fun with active learning about problem solving, communication style, decision-making, and group dynamics. Through deliberate team-building efforts, we encourage campers to experience the joy of working together!

GROUP GAMESAll campers engage in healthy, inclusive, outdoor play on a daily basis. Smiles and laughter abound as groups partake in a wide-range of accessible games that foster agility, cooperation, teamwork, and strategic thinking. Campers stretch and grow physically, socially, and emotionally as experienced program directors create choice and variety while maintaining a positive play culture.

STAFFOne word – amazing! Led by Michael Junsch ‘71, P’94, ‘95, a Poly faculty member and 30-year veteran of camp leadership, our experienced directors, skilled counselors, and talented program specialists are the backbone of Summer Experience. They are selected for their maturity and proven experience with children. Teachers, coaches, and experts in their fields are supported by hand-picked college and high school students who work as a team to help campers blossom into confident youngsters.

SPECIAL EVENTS Each summer offers of mix of expected and unexpected special days that infuse our camp with spirit. Theme days, special guests, and extraordinary events, such as drumming workshop, magic shows, and Wacky Water Day, unify campers and provide opportunities for our fun and zany counselors to add elements of surprise to each week.

SWIMMINGSwimming is an integral part of Summer Experience for all campers. Through a daily combination of instructional and recreational swim periods, all campers learn swimming and water safety skills, gain confidence, and build the foundation for a healthy lifestyle while learning a lifelong sport. With the addition of two new teaching pools, campers will spend more time in the pool than ever before!

SAFETYSummer Experience campers are safe, engaged, and connected from the moment they arrive until their afternoon departure. Our 25-acre campus and wide ranging outdoor and air-conditioned indoor facilities allow us to offer campers a comprehensive day camp experience without leaving the grounds.

LUNCHCampers cool down in our air-conditioned dining hall to enjoy delicious daily lunches with their group. There is plenty of food available to replenish hungry appetites and we offer grab and go fresh fruit for all ages. Each Wednesday, campers picnic on the front lawn and enjoy an outdoor barbecue party. Visit our website to view the mouthwatering items on our 2016 menu.

SPECIALTIESAll campers work with specialists in their fields to nurture passions and discver new ones. Through a rotating schedule of high-quality programs such as tennis, dance, art, circus, yoga, magic, music, science, swimming, and playing–campers take safe risks as they broaden their horizon of interests.

Summer Experience FAQ Can you place my child in a group with his friends? Our oldest campers frequently tell us that their reason for returning to Summer Experience year after year is to spend time with the new friends that they made at camp. While we honor one friend request per camper when assigning our groups, we place great value on helping campers develop new friendships each summer while nurturing the old. How will camp keep in touch with me?We use email to communicate frequently with all camp families both before and during the camp season. If an issue or concern arises that is specific to your child, you will receive a phone call from a member of our camp leadership team. If you ever need to speak with your child’s head counselor, we would be happy to connect you through our main camp hotline. What is your policy on electronics? We believe that camp is a place for your child to connect with other campers in the real world and not the virtual world. We strive to provide a program free from electronics except in places where we have thoughtfully incorporated them. Please do not permit your child to bring cell phones, video games, or other electronics for use during the camp day. My child has allergies. Can she eat the camp lunch? Our campers self-select their daily lunch from a menu of healthy, delicious options. All menu items are nut/peanut free, and each day our menu offers a dairy-free choice. Our lunch program is unable to accommodate ANY other allergies or restrictions. Please contact [email protected] with questions. For other Poly Prep Summer FAQ, visit www.polyprep.org/summer2016.

When possible, campers are grouped together according to years of training.

Our 8th and 9th grade campers perform in a scripted musical from the Broadway canon and follow a different five-week progression, focusing intensively to build and perfect performance techniques rather than create new material. They also will participate in the instrumental program and play in the gala concert at the end of the five weeks, whether or not they have had previous musical experience.

Program includes: Outdoor recreation including tennis, swimming, and free play.

Registration:This unique and popular five-week camp fills quickly! Students are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES

Poly offers swim lessons to children from ages two through 16. Led by Kevin Dolan, veteran summer Aquatics Director, and a team of highly qualified instructors, our swim program teaches swimming skills and fosters comfort and confidence in the water.

Ages 2–5: Our Tuesday/Thursday program provides introductory swim instruction in newly constructed shallow teaching pools. Our instructors encourage children to develop the basic steps required to learn to swim. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is willing to participate in the lesson. Only one child per adult will be allowed in the pool.

Ages 6–16: Our Monday/Wednesday program provides personalized swimming instruction that helps each swimmer meet his or her potential. On the first day, each swimmer’s ability is reviewed. “As a first time camp parent, I cannot say enough good things about Summer Experience. Everything ran smoothly and your enthusiastic staff had a lasting effect on my twins. Whether dealing with your

professional nurse, your upbeat counselors, your resourceful receptionist, or your knowledgeable swim teachers, I found your team members to be present, committed, knowledgeable, and kind. Thank you!”

Why make it a Poly Prep Summer?

“My children were at Poly Prep for eight weeks this summer and they loved the variety. Tweens are so hard to please, but my son, a “city kid”, thought it was awesome to learn ultimate Frisbee

and lacrosse on your expansive fields. My daughter was so proud of the discoveries she made in i2 Camp and was happily surprised to enjoy both water polo and ceramics. Both kids can’t wait to return each year

to reconnect with their summer friends.”

“My daughter bloomed in so many ways through Performing Arts Camp. While performing on stage was an exciting accomplishment, she most loved creating her own costume and playing her

violin with other musicians. You’ve created a safe environment for discovery and risk-taking. Her newfound confidence is developing just in time for middle school.”

“It was a summer of firsts for Daniel! He rode a yellow school bus, performed magic in the talent show, learned how to swim, ate broccoli, and went to camp without his big sister. He loved every minute

of every day, and we loved watching him get over his fears. We will be back in 2016!”

“I did not expect Kirin to enjoy the academic program as much as he did. Once his caring teachers immersed him in the process of creating an expert book about snakes, he never complained about missing

a minute of camp. I loved knowing that his reading and writing got a summer boost amidst six weeks of outdoor fun.”
