Besides, works of Nara Yoshimoto and KAWS adds another layer of flavours for collectors in building up a more
interesting, trendy collection portfolio.
Lot 125 RICHARD LIN
January 1967 Painted in 1967
Oil and aluminium on canvas 127.7 × 127.7 cm
Estimate: HK$ 5,500,000 - 6,500,000
One is Everything: 50 Years of Work by Richard Lin was published by Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in 2010, and is
currently the most comprehensive academic volume recording all works of Richard Lin. According to its content, January
1967 is currently the largest of Lin's works from the 1960s from a private collection, and makes its first appearance at
auction after 50 years when it has been first shown, hence it is with great rarity and value. In January 1967, Lin has
compressed his intense, complex thoughts into the simplest forms of minimalist blocks. With careful, precise calculation,
the square canvas was divided into two unequal parts of rectangles, while the centre is occupied by an arrangement of
parallel areas, varying from broad to fine. The different shades of white were the result of different layers of oil pigment,
they have diverse density, and subsequently, causing subtle shifts in their shading. January 1967 best demonstrates the
repeated layering of the idea "white on white", and derives an ordered, planar relationship between different segments
of the surface. He constructs a limitless extension of space, in an attempt to express the implications, in Eastern Zen
thought, of the spaces of the universe.

Lot 167 YUN GEE Hugo Rogers and Wife
Painted in 1955 Oil on canvas
74 x 91 cm Estimate: HK$ 3,000,000 - 4,000,000
Hugo Rogers and Wife is a continuation of the "Diamondism" style which Yun Gee started in the 1930s. By using multi-
angle segmentation, the effect of light dispersion when the stream goes through a triangular prism, the artist is
presenting the main subjects in an objective manner. The use of colour here is similar to that of his "Synchromism"
period. Here, red and blue are juxtaposed to stress out the sharp contrast between the coloured blocks, illustrating the
importance of such formal presentation of the scene with tension and passion. Hugo Rogers and Wife is recognized as
one of Yun Gee's final art work creation. Its challenging yet creative creation technique, together with the unusual
subject matter, gives best summary of the artist's life in his final years. It therefore provides precious and unique
historical data for researchers of Yun Gee.
Lot 160 CHU TEH-CHUN
Composition No. 169 Painted in 1965 Oil on canvas
73 × 99.7 cm
Estimate: HK$ 3,200,000 - 4,200,000
Composition No. 169 was created in 1965. After a bout of experimentation with abstract elements in his art in the mid
to late 1950s, Chu Teh-Chun started fusing the essence of Chinese traditional ink painting with Western oil painting. In
Composition No. 169, rhythm is hidden beneath the complex landscape. Under the large dark blocks of the sky, subtle
hints of mineral colours like stone green are accentuated. In building the tranquil atmosphere of the painting, the
4
fantastical musical illusive space appears reminiscent of the abstract landscape scene, giving a heart-touching emotion.
Lot 161 CHU TEH-CHUN
L'automne, le 1 mai 1978 Painted in 1978
Oil on canvas 195.5 × 97 cm
Estimate: HK$ 4,000,000 - 7,000,000
Painted after Chu Teh-Chun ventured into absolute abstract expression, L'automne, le 1 mai 1978 illustrates how the
artist combines light, shadow and colour of the West with the fundamental connotations of Chinese aesthetics. He
mastered the speed of using brush and tried to play with light by creating rhythm on the canvas. The source of light
activates the surrounding colours that pervade difficult trials, the gorgeous oil paints, running freely, is harbouring an
emotional space. The dark background suggests the ambiance of "desolate mid-autumn". Yet it is through interweaving
colours and strokes that Chu Teh-Chun creates gushing dim lights, forming an intense contrast to the vivid and bright
yellow area at the corner of the foreground, while complementing the latter in terms of its luminosity. At the bottom
right, tangerine, bright yellow and off-white colours gather to form a burning source of light, along with the setting sun
and the rising moon, light is moving and shifting around. The reflections among the conglomerations and separations
also define the ever-mutating space. Meanwhile, reflections at dim spots bring about the desolation of autumn.

Lot 217 ZHOU CHUNYA Peach Blossom & Green Dog
Painted in 2008 Oil on canvas
200.4 x 250.6 cm Estimate: HK$ 6,000,000 - 8,000,000
The peach blossoms in Zhou Chunya's paintingsare beautiful, charming and very expressive, they can easily attract
viewers’ attention by its strong and devastating emotional undertone. The prosperous spring scenery in Peach Blossom
and Green Dog is achieved through freehand brushstrokes with power and speed. From the green dog's hair to the grass,
the woods, and the sky, one can easily feel the artist’s jumping sensation and powerful indulgence. The green dog (an
avatar of the artist), is strolling among the flowers and gazing at the viewers, the blood-coloured red peach blossom is a
reflection of the artist's deeper spirit. Peach Blossom & Green Dog is comprised of the all most recognized symbols of
Zhou Chunya’s art creations, the green dog, peach blossoms and the red human figures. Been the only one in the
market showcasing these three elements at the same time, the painting is of great rarity and high market value. The
painting offers an important turning point for Zhou to shift from erotic-dominated subjects to alternate themes.
Lot 225
LUO ZHONGLI Crossing the River
Painted in 2007 Oil on canvas 160 x 199.5 cm
Estimate: HK$ 5,000,000 - 7,000,000
The change in Luo Zhongli’s style is evident in Crossing the River as he has absorbed the traditional Chinese painting
philosophy of "introducing calligraphy into painting". The free style and fluidity in the brushwork of calligraphy give the
oil painting more emphasis on the painting's calligraphic character. And he further distorted and exaggerated the
peasant images. The artist has absorbed the simple yet beautiful colour palettes of ancient Chinese folk art. He used
6
these strong, pure, and bright colours to show the rustic vitality of the peasants. The bright colours are highly visually
stimulating, which heightensthe painting's emotional tension. In this way, Luo Zhongli transcended figurative artistic
language and established a personalized visual system.
Lot 223 HE DUOLING The Russian Forest Series (Golden Age) Chekhov
Nightingale Painted in 2017
Oil on canvas 200 x 150 cm
Estimate: HK$ 5,800,000 - 7,800,000
In The Russian Forest Series (Golden Age) Chekhov Nightingale, Chekhov is placed in the vast forest. He seems to be
taking a break from writing and leaves the hut for a walk in the forest. The highlight of this work is the application of
colour. Instead of recreating ordinary forest scenery, He Duoling depicts the characters and backgrounds with dense
grey, which is highly subjective. Grey is not a monotonous colour. The grey colour is modest and does not cause direct
sensory stimulation. The application of faded grey makes the picture blurry, but overlaid layers make the texture of the
picture more subtle and restrained. Profound meaning and hints of a simple and boundless texture are created. This is
in harmony with the profound sharpness of Chekhov's literary works and the style of critical realism. It makes the
picture diffuse into the illusion of literature and triggers people's thoughts and imagination, as if to summon the
eternal sense of time.

Lot 227
LIU YE Angels in Flight
Painted in 1998 Oil on canvas
40 x 40 cm Estimate: HK$ 4,000,000 - 6,000,000
In Angels in Flight, the artist has divided the canvas into four even parts: the lower half shows two children standing
next to the water, with the mountains acting as a spatial guide. The upper half is a vast expanse of lovely clouds and
skies, abandoning the previous narrative full of elemental surrealism. Whilst Angels in Flight illustrates Liu Ye's shift
towards a more simplistic style, (though short), the piece marks an important turning point for his latter, more abstract
style. This work was a compilation of Liu Ye's aesthetic experiences from 1990s Germany. When he returned to China,
he started to experiment with this new approach through adopting Chinese landscape in his paintings, understanding
the limitless possibility of space, bridging his earlier and latter styles.
Lot 234 Cai Guo-qiang Skybound UFO and Shrine
Executed in 2002 Gunpowder and ink on paper
259 x 339.5 cm Estimate: HK$ 3,500,000 - 5,500,000
Skybound UFO and Shrine used gunpowder as a medium with two supernatural forces of the old and new eras--
extraterrestrials and religious beliefs--as motifs to explore the mysterious power that exists within the universe. With a
basis in the cultural essence of the East and the deductive spirit of Western science, and in a global context that crosses
boundaries of region and race, this work puts forward a profound reflection on the relationship between human
beings, the natural world, and supernatural forces. The large eye-shaped blast marks represent a flying saucer in the
air, which produces random focalization on the paper due to the difference in the degree of combustion. Some parts of
the paper are even perforated by the intense flame, and the falling-line section surrounding the ellipse is designed to
simulate the motion of the vehicle in the air with the wind. Corresponding to this is the image of the lower right corner
of the square shrine. Traces of embers spread across the textures on the paper's surface, creating a space where virtual
and real textures interact.

Fine Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
Chinese Paintings
12
Lot 506 Xu Beihong
Standing Horse Painted in 1939
Mounted, ink on paper 102.5 × 82 cm
Estimate: HK$ 3,500,000 - 4,500,000
Master Xu Beihong is renowned for drawing horses, and his paintings feature horses enjoy a high reputation in Chinese
history. Especially those paintings created during World-war ll, given the special historical environment, these works
displayed unique historical significance. He usually depicts the general postures of the horses by abstract brushes, and
then the muscle and bone structures, and of course the effect of light and shadows as well. Last but not least, he will
concisely depict the facial features with precise brushwork. In addition, horses‟ hair flows with the refreshing breeze,
bringing the vivid scenario into audiences‟ visionary.
There were many similar paintings presented by Xu Beihong at that period of time, and one of the most famous ones
was “Standing against the Adversity” painted in 1945. While In this painting above, the horse was standing uprightly
with a pretty firm look on its face as well. The variation in thickness of ink was smooth and fluent, a strong sense of
stereoscopic strikes into readers‟ eyesight. Although the running of the brushes seems rough, yet the positioning and
structure were still discreetly presented. The combination of Chinese and western techniques conjointly reveal the
robust and prettiness of the creature. Each horse painting was given a spirit of resistance during world-war ll, which
symbolizes the toughness and unswerving determination of Chinese people.
This painting was finished in 1939 in Singapore, preserved by important collector till now. Recognized as a rarely seen
significant artwork of Xu Beihong, this painting will be revealed to the public for the very first time in Poly Auction
Hong Kong‟s 2018 Fall Auction.
Lot 516 Wu Guanzhong
Plum Woods Painted in 1995
Mounted, ink and color on paper
69 x 138 cm Estimate: HK$ 4,000,000-6,000,000
13
Wu Guanzhong argues that the subject matter is not the most significant element. The art pieces resonate with the
audience via their art forms, and they fail to touch the mass if the language of art form was not polished enough, which
render the art pieces useless. Also, "the color and richness of the oil painting, the smoothness and charm in the
Chinese painting, they can be complementary to each other. Both oil painting or Chinese paintings are tools and art
forms." Thus he merged the ancient and modern, integrated the Chinese and the Western, understood the law how
art styles changed over time in the world, and created his unique art style on the basis of the essence of both Chinese
and Western art.
The most distinguished feature of painting is its "two-dimensionality". As a result, the history of modernism painting can
be regarded as a process of moving towards planarity. Pollock's drip painting is the most direct representation of
Greenberg's theory. Alchemy forms a visually pulsating symphony, which the pigments spontaneously turn into an
image full of wandering, twisting, integrating colors and lines. While Wu Guanzhong's Life shares apparent similarities
with Alchemy: the crossing dots and lines, the unbounded picture effect, and the image lack of visual focus. After
scrutiny, however, the differences of the two lie in their material medium and theoretical foundation.
Lot 510
Qi Baishi Litchi
Hanging scroll, ink and color on paper 134x33cm.
Estimate: HK$ 2,800,000-4,800,000
Once upon a time, Qi Baishi was on his way from Guilin to Qinzhou, it was coincidently the harvest season
of lychee. Lychee was hanging on the trees and in its perfect ripeness, the color and lust of the fruit blows Qi
Baishi‟s mind. From then on, this fruit was brought into his paintings as a major subject. He relocated to
Beijing in 1917 and found himself was still fond of drawing lychee, therefore the painting skill regarding this
fruit was blended in his painting skills‟ transform in his late stage. In this painting, the lychee fruit was in lush
status, hanged idly on the branch. The trunk of the tree was painted in light ink, simple and brief. He used
smaller brush to draw the tiny dash of lychee to show the roughness of its skin. The dark leaves served as a
14
foil to the brightness of the fruit, which stimulated the senses of the audiences.
Lychee is a very common subject in many Chinese poems and Chinese paintings. The first Chinese character
of "lychee” is "ly", "ly" and "profit", and "auspiciousness" are homonymic words in Chinese, so lychee
symbolizes clever, auspicious and big profits to some extent. A branch of lychee implies "a small investment",
and thickly dotted lychees symbolize big profits, so this combination has very auspicious meaning of "big
fortune and great profit". Master Qi Baishi is very good at utilizing this plain language in his paintings as an
expression. The spirit of Modern Chinese artworks was conveyed through these ink paintings, which suits
both refined and popular tastes.
Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
Lot 641 Chen Hongshou
Meditating Beneath the Pine Tree Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk
127 × 49.5 cm
Estimate: HK$ 1,000,000-1,800,000
Chen Hongshou (1598 – 1652), formerly romanized as Chen Hung-shou, was a Chinese painter of the late Ming
dynasty. He boasts unique style and technique in landscape, flowers and figure‟s painting. The figures bone structures
depicted by him are normally lofty and sturdy. The lines are averagely smooth and energetic. When it came to the
techniques of expression, we can see the flexibility and its varieties as well. He utilizes drier ink bold lines to depict
man and embellish ladies with a more plump color, by which enriched the expression techniques in classical Chinese
figures‟ paintings.
“Meditating beneath the pine tree” was delicate in lines and elegant in its color. It shows a great combination of both
the traditional techniques in classical Chinese paintings and the steadiness of the figures as well. The pine tree in this
painting was standing uprightly. The rock lies underneath it and the scholar was lying down and resting beside the rock.
the expression on his face was tranquil. He was meditating while listening to the sound made by the breeze swaying
through the pine tree. What a pleasant feeling. When looking at the right side of the painting, there was a bunch of
plum blossoms and bamboo branches inside the bronze vase. The painting was also accompanied by a poem with five
15
characters to each line, which was rarely seen in Chen‟s painting. The figure and articles in this painting matched
perfectly with each other and depicted a vivid living situation in later Ming Dynasty, which embodied the spiritual
pursuit of Chen Hongshou.

branches in the picture. Two figures sitting in the pavilion are listening to the wind and watching the snow, tasting the
tea and recalling the past. The finger ink technique imbues the work with a sense of ingenuity and naturalness. The
white space creates a landscape of snowy scenery, which forms a strong contrast with the dense branches in the woods,
highlighting the ingenuity of traditional Chinese painting techniques.

"All nature diamonds crystallize deep in the earth, however not all diamonds are created equal. Indeed, when analyzed
with advanced gemological instruments, most diamonds mined and faceted as gemstones contain certain impurities.
Virtually all of these diamonds incorporated trace amounts of the element nitrogen within their crystal structure. These
minute quantities of nitrogen are almost always responsible for the slight tints of yellow displayed to various degrees in
diamonds along the colorless range. Such nitrogen-bearing diamonds fall into the type I group. At the highest end of the
color scale, only D color diamonds seem to show no tint or color at all.
With each rule comes the exception, and there are indeed diamonds which do not contain any detectable nitrogen
impurities: those belonging to the type II diamond family. Some of these occasionally contain the element boron, which
endows them with the rare blue color and designates them as type IIb. All others are known as type IIa.
While some Type IIa diamonds can be tinted pink or brown, others are blessed with the most exceptional and pure
color and are often associated with a high degree of transparency, a quality sometimes referred to as “water”. Such
diamonds can look so colorless that they seem to appear like “crystal clear water” and often contain only a few
minute, or even no inclusions. Only some of these diamonds can present such a purity of color that they display less
chroma than regular D color diamonds.
The diamond of 12.33 carat combines such exceptional characteristics as to display this particular quality of the “finest
water” Type IIa diamonds of the kind and sizes, exhibiting these superior qualities, are very rare. Such diamonds have
been unearthed in limited numbers from various sources around the world (eg. South Africa, Brazil and India)."
Olde Water
"This diamond has been cut and polished following traditionally faceting techniques which were used over a century ago
in order to produce an antique-looking stone. Such unusual cuts are unevenly shaped to various degrees with atypical
proportions and normally show a lower symmetry and several extra facets conferring them a peculiar charm unrivaled
by modern diamond cuts.
18
Typical examples of such old cuts are the old mind cut, the rose cut and the moghul cut.
Diamonds of this kind and size, exhibiting a superior quality as well as an old cutting style, and belonging to the finest of
natural color type IIa diamonds are very rare. Such diamonds have been unearthed in limited numbers from various
sources around the world (eg. South Africa, Brazil and India)”

Ever since its emergence on the earth‟s surface centuries ago, diamond has been regarded as one of nature‟s
most wondrous gifts. In addition to beauty, diamond possesses gemmological characteristics that distinguish it in a
world rich in striking and unusual gemstones. For example, its structure of strongly bonded carbon atoms makes it the
hardest substance known to mankind. Because of this quality, the gems are often cherished as emblems of eternity, and
regularly adorn engagement rings as marks of love and devotion.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has had released a research years ago, stating the rareness of the
very little 0.5% of pink diamond could be rated as Fancy Intense Pink in pink diamond. To create a stone of Fancy
Intense Pink, it requires a highly contradictive criterion of combination.
By reflecting and refracting the surrounding panorama of light to the viewer‟s eye, the 8 carats Fancy Intense Pink
diamond shows amazing brilliance and fire in a mosaic and artistic composition, full of vibrancy and vitality.

few craftsmen in Hermès qualified to make Constance bag. It takes an expert craftsman up to 14 hours to produce a
normal leather Constance bag, by sewing up over 50 components using complex techniques. Craftsmen have to spend
more time on selecting appropriate leather and to use even more complex skills to make a crocodile Constance bag.
This is the reason why Hermès usually does not provide bicolour custom-made service, but rather, a special limited
edition.
