My first visit to the Polish National Show and the auction, at that time named Polish Prestige, was in 1989 and it was then a very intimate gathering of Arabian horse enthusiasts.

For me, it was the first trip I made by myself as an adult and there was never a question about what the destination would be. The feeling I get when I drive down the road towards the gates of Janów Podlaski is still the same as it was 23 years ago; to see the famous Zegarowa, the Clock Stable, at the end of the road is truly something special and it gives me goosebumps. In 1989 the show and auction was held in September but it has been held in August since 1992 and today’s event is a big event in Poland with coverage on national television, and the Polish President has also been there on several occasions. and placed second. Esparto did a great job as a sire at Białka Stud and the pretty Egiria (ex Egira by Emigrant) is a proof of that; with 90 points, she placed third. The final yearling filly class was won by Euzona (Om El Bellissimo x Euzetia), who scored highest of the yearlings with 92.17 points. The private-bred Noumea (Ekstern x Noc) was second with 90.17; she is bred and owned by Marek Kondrasiuk.

The two-year old fillies were shown in two classes with Michalów´s Emandilla (Om El Shahmaan x Espadrilla) as the winner in the first section with 91.17 points. Second place went to Falborek Arabians’ Esima (Altis x Emanta) with 90.67, followed by another filly from Michalów, the bay Diara (Eryks x Diaspora). The second class was won by another Falborek filly, the already white Al Lahab daughter Perlahaba (ex Pernacja by Ekstern) with 90.33 points. Falborek also captured the second place with Wabia, another daughter of Al Lahab and this time out of Wasa (by WH Justice). Eight three-year old fillies were shown and the winner of the class was actually in race training at the beginning of the season and was moved to the show barn to be shown at the Polish Nationals. This would turn out to be a wise decision as Primera (Eden C x Preria) won the class with 92.17 points and later would be the Polish National Gold Junior Female Champion. Second place went to Białka Stud and the great mover Camilia (Piaff x Calineczka) who scored 90.83 points. Camilia

was sold to Australia at last year’s auction, but the buyer never paid for the horses so she stayed at Białka Stud; I am positive that we will see some really exciting foals out of her in the future. It would turn out to be very tough competition among the fillies in the championships with two fillies tied for Gold. The score in the class had to be the tie-breaker and with a higher score, Primera was awarded Gold with Perfinka the Silver Champion. Bronze went to Emandilla with Top Five placings to Potentilla and Perlahaba. Poland is famous for their mares and if you have never seen the senior mare classes at the Polish National Show, then you are definitely in for a treat. It is near to impossible to predict who will win as you will find some of the world’s most decorated mares competing. The mares aged four-to-six years were split into two and the winner of the first class was a daughter of the great Pilar (Fawor x Pipi),

who was sold to Al Shaqab Stud in 2010. Pilarosa is a tall four-year-old grey mare by the straight Egyptian stallion Al Adeed Al Shaqab. She got 92.17 points with high scores on type, head/neck and movement. El Piatzolla (WH Justice x Enya), bred and owned by ZPH Strusinianka Ltd, has been very successful in the show-ring and she impressed once more to receive 91.5 points which placed her second in the class. Third place went to Michalów´s Parmana (Al Maraam x Palmira) with 90.5; she has just returned from a lease to Athbah Stud. Another Michalów mare that just returned from Middle East and Athbah Stud is El Saghira (Galba x

Emira), who won the second section with 92.67 points, including 20-19-20 on movement. Her dam Emira (Laheeb x Embra) is currently on lease to Ajman Stud. Second place in the class went to Janów Podlaski´s Alabama (Gazal Al Shaqab x Altona) with 90.83 points. The mares aged seven-to-ten years old was a tough class with a great group of horses forward. The class had 13 entries, six daughters of Ekstern, six of Gazal Al Shaqab and one by Magnum Psyche. Sefora (Ekstern x Sawantka) was Polish National Junior Champion as a

yearling and with 92 points, she was the winner of the class. The three following horses were three Michalów-bred daughters of Gazal Al Shaqab: Wilda (ex Wilga by Ekstern), Norma (ex Nina by Monogramm), and Pistoria (ex Palmira by Monogramm), and they received between 91.93-91.33 points. Fourth placed Laranda (Ekstern x Larissa), also from Michalów, received 91 points. The older mare class had five stunning entries, two from Janów Podlaski

and three from Michalów. There have been only two mares who have managed to win both the Junior and Senior Championships as well as the Best in Show on both occasions and they are Pianissima (Gazal Al Shaqab x Pianosa by Eukaliptus) and Pinga (Gazal Al Shaqab x Pilar by Fawor). This year we would add another mare to that group when the 2003 Polish National Junior Champion Mare and Best in Show, Palmeta, won the older mare class with the highest score of the show, 92.67 points, tying with El Saghira, and was later named Gold Champion and Best in Show. Palmeta is a daughter of 1995 Polish National Champion Stallion Ecaho (Pepton x Etruria by Palas) and out of Pilica (Fawor x Pipi by Banat). Pilica is a full sister to Pinga’s dam Pilar, which makes all three mares a part of the great Pilarka’s family. Second place in the class was Espadrilla (Monogramm x Emanacja) with 92 points, a previous Polish National Reserve Champion Mare. In the championship, the Silver Champion Mare title went to El Saghira with Sefora as the Bronze Champion. Pilarosa and El Piatzolla were awarded Top Five. Palmeta has been a great broodmare at Janów Podlaski as she is the dam of 2008 Białka Spring Show Champion and Best in Show and Polish National Junior Champion Mare and Best in Show, Palabra (by Enzo), as well as the 2010 Bialka Spring Show Champion and 2012 Prague Intercup Gold Junior Champion, Palatina (by QR Marc). Her son Palatino (by Pesal) was to add more success to Palmeta’s credit when he won his class at this year’s Nationals with 92.17 points and was later named Polish National Gold Champion Stallion. Second place went to the privately-bred Elmaran (Al Maraam x Ekstera) with 90.5 points; he is bred and owned by Wojciech Parczewski. The older stallion class was won by Pegasus (Gazal Al Shaqab x Pepesza by Eukaliptus) with 92 points; like Palatino, he is also bred and owned by Janów Podlaski. Second place went to the 12-year old Salar (Ecaho x Saba by Etat) with 91.17 points. Equifor (Gazal Al Shaqab x Eqviria) was third place with 91 points. With Palatino as the Gold Champion, the Silver Champion was Pegasus with Elmaran as the Bronze Champion. Top Four went to Salar. It was a very successful show for Janów Podlaski with three Gold

Champions, one Silver Champion, two Bronze Champions and the Best in Show. They also claimed the prize for Best Trainer with Pawel Kozikowski, who received the Best Handler trophy. All the championships are held on Sunday morning and the highlight was without doubt when the WAHO Trophy was awarded to the amazing Pianissima. I do not think many eyes were dry when Director Marek Trela, with a proud smile, walked her around the arena so that

the audience could see her up close. The moment also marked Pianissima’s retirement from the show-ring; she has nothing left to prove. After all the awards, it was time to see all the auction horses outside. You could feel the tension and after lunch, people were walking the barns to have a closer look at the horses they were interested in buying. This year, two of the very best Gazal Al Shaqab daughters were the big poster names and as expected they would also end up as the two high-sellers. Ejrene (ex Emocja by Monogramm) was the 2007 Białka Spring Show Junior Champion and Best in Show, 2007 Polish National Junior Champion, 2011 Wels International A

Show Champion Mare and 2011 Polish National Silver Champion Mare. Etnologia (ex Esparceta by Europejczyk) was the 2005 Białka Spring Show Junior Champion and Best in Show and 2011 European Senior Bronze Champion Mare, making both mares well-decorated in the show-ring. Ejrene was entered as lot three and her bid went over €400,000 but a misunderstanding made her walk out of the arena unsold. After the last horse entered, Ejrene was called back and it was announced that the highest bid on her was €440,000 and her new owner was the Ajman Stud, thus reuniting her with her old stablemates Kwestura and Emira, as well as several other great mares. Etnologia reached €370,000 and her new owner is Shirley and Charlie Watts of Halsdon Aabians in the UK. Of the 28 horses in this year’s Pride of Poland Sale, 19 were sold for a total of €1,325,000. The mare Emmonida (Gazal Al Shaqab x Emmona by Monogramm) did not meet her reserve during the auction but was sold afterwards to Belgium for an undisclosed figure. An additional 13 horses were sold at the Selection Sale, making the total of the whole auction €1,424,600, Emmonida not included. Of the 33 horses sold during the whole auction, 16 found their new homes in the Middle East, 15 will stay in Europe and two horses were sold to Australia and USA respectively. After the auction some people headed back to Warsaw but many people stayed for the three State Stud breeding parades. This is a great opportunity to see this year’s foals and also the stallions at stud as well as a large number of the mares. The barns are open for everyone to walk around and to see the horses they want to. A visit to the Pride of Poland is not like a trip to a regular show; you will have a unique opportunity to see the horses up close and to get a feeling of the breeding philosophy that has produced some of the best horses in the world. With the images of the foal crops in my mind as I write this, I can reassure you that we will see some pretty amazing youngsters next year as well!
