TRANSCRIPT
Endemic countries1. Reduction in polio-infected districts: on track for a >50%
reduction for type 1 poliovirus.2. Increase in polio vaccination coverage: on track in 7 of the 9
endemic transmission zones in the 4 countries.
Re-infected countries3. Interruption of outbreaks in countries with imported poliovirus in
2006: on track, with outbreaks already stopped in 10 of the 13 re-infected countries.
Financing4. Sufficient funding for all planned eradication activities in 2007:

Polio Eradication: Progress against MilestonesInterim report September 2007
Milestone 1: by end-2007, 50% reduction in infected districts in the endemic countries relative to 2006
Status: 75% decline in type 1 polio-infected districts*
** source: WHO/UNICEF 2006 Joint Reporting Form (2005 for India)†Jan-Aug 07 - data in WHO/HQ as of 18 Sep 2007
* Since 2006, the interruption of type 1 polio has been the first priority of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative due to its higher paralytic rate and propensity towards international spread compared to type 3 polio.

Milestone 2: by end-2007, OPV coverage in the endemic transmission zones > polio-free zones in each country.Status: 7 of 9 endemic transmission zones on track
•Afghanistan: the proportion of zero-dose (never-vaccinated) children in the southern zone has increased from 4% in 2006 to 12% to date in 2007, due to deteriorating security.
•Nigeria: the proportion of zero-dose children in very high-risk, high-risk and medium high-risk transmission zones has declined from an average of 27% in 2006 to an average of 16% in 2007.
