Mission Statement

THE PIT represents the ultimate in martial arts and fitness. We started in martial arts and fitness over 30 years ago, and evolved into the most effective, functional, practical, and proven "state of the art" system of martial arts and fitness in the world today.

THE PIT includes a blend of "old school" training, attitude, power, and discipline; combined with a "cutting edge" scientific, modern, result-oriented, and tested and proven curriculum. THE PIT's mission is to provide a vehicle for everyone of all ages to realize their full potential, grow strong, gain confidence, get into great shape, make friends, and learn self-defense...while having fun.

About THE PIT

THE PIT is a practical, functional, tested & proven, effective, all-inclusive, always evolving, self-contained, multidisciplinary approach to martial arts and fitness.

THE PIT is “Old School” yet cutting edge. THE PIT is simple yet difficult. THE PIT is physical yet cerebral. THE PIT is always the same yet varied. THE PIT is always routine yet never boring. Never be a bully, yet tolerate being bullied. Always be confident, yet never cocky. THE PIT is very serious yet always upbeat & fun. THE PIT is traditional yet innovative.

THE PIT’s philosophy is simple: Use what works, discard what doesn’t. The only way to get into top shape (cardio & strength) is by training very intensely and to leaving your comfort zone often. The only way to improve is through an open mind and countless repetitions.

THE PIT has evolved into one of the world’s most famous and respected martial arts and fitness gyms in the world.

Question & Answers

Q. What is Hawaiian Kempo? A. Hawaiian Kempo is a blend of KaJuKenBo, Boxing, Kickboxing, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Extreme Fitness alla CrossFit/CrossPit (Anaerobic, Aerobic, Plyometric, Strength training, Calisthenics). Q. What is a "normal" training session like at the Pit? A. A warm up, some basic technique drills, bag work (standing, and on the ground), some extreme fitness drills (CrossPit), then some didactic skills training striking, and on the ground. Q. What is THE PIT? A. THE PIT is where Hawaiian Kempo is taught Q. Does Hawaiian Kempo have a belt system? A. Yes we do. We have three separate belt systems. One for 3-8 year olds, one for 9-13 year olds, and one for adults. Q. Does Hawaiian Kempo have Katas? A. No, Hawaiian Kempo students are tested on all practical and useful techniques; striking (punches, kicks, knees, elbows, palm strikes, hammer blows), grappling (takedown, takedown defense, clinching, bottom escapes, positioning, submissions, striking on the ground), and physical conditioning. We have nothing against Katas (in fact I think they are beautiful), however I feel the time it would take practicing Katas would take away from our more important task at hand...teaching our students how to defend themselves, and get into excellent physical condition. Q. When was Hawaiian Kempo founded? A. 1985 Q. What is your age limit? A. We start at 3 years old, and we have students in their 20's, 30's 40's 50's 60's, and 70's. Q. Do I have to fight if I join your system? A. No, I have a separate "fight team", and out of my 200 students, only about 12 fight in organized matches.

Q. If THE PIT has no religious affiliation, then why is there a prayer? A. Reciting the "KaJuKenBo prayer" has been a part of our system since 1947, and it is recited as a way to feel closeness with our KaJuKenBo forefathers, and peers, and a way to

Page 6: Policies and Procedures - The Pitthepit.tv/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/manualfinal.pdf · 2008. 7. 15. · Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling These are sports that teach great grappling skills,

6

meditate after a hard training session. Q. What is the difference between Hawaiian Kempo and: Tae Kwon Do...Tae Kwon Do is primarily a sport (it is an Olympic sport). It focuses on strikes, and kicks to score points. A lot of time is spent on Katas and other forms. Tae Kwon Do is entirely a stand up sport, and they do not practice and type of ground defense/offence. Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling These are sports that teach great grappling skills, with Judo and Jiu-Jitsu specializing with throws, and joint locks, and chokes. These three sports do not include striking in their curriculums. Kickboxing Kickboxing has awesome strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows), but has no ground defense, or offense. Hawaiian Kempo Teaches, and drills extensive strikes (kicks, knees, punches, elbows), takedowns, takedown defense, ground techniques from the top, and bottom. We learn, drill, and spar in as close to a real street situation as safely possible. Everything we learn and drill is dedicated to staying safe if ever attacked. And at The Pit we are very aware of the fact that even with great techniques and skill, physical conditioning, and strength are very important factors in ensuring a positive outcome in a life threatening street situation, so we do extensive conditioning drill to ensure our students stay in prime shape.
