Automatic number plate recognition is a mass surveillance

method used to read the license plates on vehicles. Our systemcan scan number plates on cars traveling up to 140km/h. They areused by various police forces and as a method of electronic tollcollection on pay-per-use roads, and monitoring traffic activity

such as red light adherence in an intersection or locatingsuspicious car in a city perimeter.

ALPR can be used to store the images captured by the camerasas well as the text from the license plate, with some configurableto store a photograph of the driver. System commonly useINFRARED lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any

time day.The software aspect of the system runs on smart camera box andcan be linked to other applications or database. It first uses aseries of image manipulation techniques to detect, normalize and

enhance the image of the number plate, and finally extracts thealphanumeric , date-time, lane identification, and any otherinformation that is required is completed in somewhere around250 milliseconds.
