The student is Jacob Watkins, not Jacob Phelps. We apologize for the error. From Staff Reports [email protected] North Texas veterans have a new place to go to seek medical treatment. The Garland VA Medical Center opened in April, and expanded to provide more ser- vices Tuesday, June 23. New features include Patient Aligned Care Teams, Well Women’s Teams, laboratory functions, pharmacists, social workers and dietitian services. In total, about 8,000 patients will be served through these. In the next few months, the Center will begin offering der- matology, radiology and com- munity-care. When it’s fully functional, it will serve more than 184,000 veterans and cre- ate around 5,000 jobs. U.S. Rep. Colin Allred vis- ited Garland VA Medical Cen- ter last week. He’s worked with U.S. Rep. Ron Wright – who represents the Arlington, Waxa- hachie and Corsicana areas – on the project since last year. “When North Texans work together, we can do great things,” Allred said. “The open- ing of this facility is the result of bipartisan cooperation and partnership between every level of government. The Garland VA Medical Center will help our community fight the spread of coronavirus and provide des- perately needed care for our vet- erans. It was so inspiring to see the hardworking folks at the VA serving our veterans. I’m grate- ful to everyone in our North Texas community for pushing this project over the finish line and to all our VA health care professionals for their hard work helping veterans on the frontlines of this pandemic.” Garland VA Medical Center expands services From Staff Reports [email protected] A 44-year-old Murphy man, Fahad H. Shah, faces eight charges alleging he defrauded the government of $1.6 million in federal Paycheck Protection Program funds and a separate civil case to forfeit the house he purchased in 2018. The charges were unsealed and he was arrested by the FBI Tuesday, June 23. Shah is accused of applying for $3 million in funds under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, for which he received $1.6 million. The application was made on behalf of a wedding planning business owned by his wife that went out of busi- ness in 2018. He allegedly used the funds to pay off his home mortgage, buy a Tesla vehicle and de- posit $550,000 in his E-Trade investment account. The wedding planning busi- ness, WBF Weddings, was formed in 2011 and listed Shah’s wife as its director but forfeited its corporate status in 2018 for failing to file a state franchise tax return or pay state franchise taxes, the in- dictment showed. In a PPE application seek- ing $3 million, the Murphy man claimed the business had as many as 123 employees and an average monthly payroll of $701,550, according to the in- dictment. PPE funds are guaranteed by the Small Business Asso- ciation and provided under the CARES Act passed by the U.S. Congress in March to provide forgivable loans to businesses suffering hardships caused by COVID-19. A civil forfeiture lawsuit contends that the mortgage on Shah’s house at 308 Post Oak Trail, bought in 2018 for $335,266, was paid off days after the PPE funds were re- ceived. The indictment against Shah is the third fraud prosecution filed in the Eastern District of Texas court in Sherman in connection with COVID-19 emergency business rescue loans. If convicted, four of the eight counts against the Mur- phy man carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Anyone with information about allegations of attempted fraud involving COVID-19 can report it by calling the De- partment of Justice’s National Center for Disaster Fraud Hot- line at 866-720-5721 or via the NCDF Web Complaint Form at: https://www.justice.gov/ disaster-fraud/ncdf-disaster- complaint-form. North Texas veterans have a new place to go to seek medical treatment.

The Garland VA Medical Center opened in April, and expanded to provide more ser-vices Tuesday, June 23. New features include Patient Aligned Care Teams, Well Women’s Teams, laboratory functions,

pharmacists, social workers and dietitian services. In total, about 8,000 patients will be served through these.

In the next few months, the Center will begin offering der-matology, radiology and com-munity-care. When it’s fully functional, it will serve more than 184,000 veterans and cre-ate around 5,000 jobs.

U.S. Rep. Colin Allred vis-ited Garland VA Medical Cen-

ter last week. He’s worked with U.S. Rep. Ron Wright – who represents the Arlington, Waxa-hachie and Corsicana areas – on the project since last year.

“When North Texans work together, we can do great things,” Allred said. “The open-ing of this facility is the result of bipartisan cooperation and partnership between every level of government. The Garland VA Medical Center will help

our community fight the spread of coronavirus and provide des-perately needed care for our vet-erans. It was so inspiring to see the hardworking folks at the VA serving our veterans. I’m grate-ful to everyone in our North Texas community for pushing this project over the finish line and to all our VA health care professionals for their hard work helping veterans on the frontlines of this pandemic.”

A 44-year-old Murphy man, Fahad H.

The application was made on behalf of a wedding planning business owned by his wife that went out of busi-ness in 2018.

He allegedly used the funds to pay off his home mortgage, buy a Tesla vehicle and de-posit $550,000 in his E-Trade investment account.

The wedding planning busi-ness, WBF Weddings, was formed in 2011 and listed Shah’s wife as its director but forfeited its corporate status in 2018 for failing to file a state franchise tax return or pay state franchise taxes, the in-dictment showed.

In a PPE application seek-ing $3 million, the Murphy man claimed the business had

as many as 123 employees and an average monthly payroll of $701,550, according to the in-dictment.

PPE funds are guaranteed by the Small Business Asso-ciation and provided under the CARES Act passed by the U.S. Congress in March to provide forgivable loans to businesses suffering hardships caused by COVID-19.

A civil forfeiture lawsuit contends that the mortgage on Shah’s house at 308 Post Oak Trail, bought in 2018 for $335,266, was paid off days after the PPE funds were re-ceived.

The indictment against Shah is the third fraud prosecution filed in the Eastern District of Texas court in Sherman in connection with COVID-19 emergency business rescue loans.

If convicted, four of the eight counts against the Mur-phy man carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

Anyone with information about allegations of attempted fraud involving COVID-19 can report it by calling the De-partment of Justice’s National Center for Disaster Fraud Hot-line at 866-720-5721 or via the NCDF Web Complaint Form at: https://www.justice.gov/disaster-fraud/ncdf-disaster-complaint-form.
