Polarmoss Company, founded in 1985, is located on the beautiful island of Hailuoto in Finland, in Northern Europe next door to the Arctic Circle. The island’s exceptionally unique, rich, and unspoiled nature has a significant meaning for the company in the form of lichen called reindeer moss.

The company is one of the largest suppliers of dried and dyed reindeer moss products in the world. The company’s high-quality products have long been used in a wide range of decorating sectors. The main market areas of these products are Europe and the USA.

The company’s heritage of moss utilization extends back over 80 years, its owner being a third-generation entrepreneur in the moss sector. Knowing the possibilities of natural moss, the company made a decision in 2012 to contribute in bringing nature closer to people—indoors—in the form of interior design products. After starting deliveries of these products, also to new market areas, the company decided in 2014 to renew its name from Polar-Moos to the more international Polarmoss.

Polarmoss high-quality interior design products contain a long tradition of master craftsmanship. The entire production chain is done as handwork in the company: first picking the correct grades of moss by hand in the forest, then dyeing it, and lastly manufacturing it traditionally as skillful handicraft into contemporary products.

Company

Reindeer moss is beautiful greyish-colored lichen that forms large mats over the ground in boreal and arctic regions around the circumpolar north. It grows on the surface of bare soil or gravel in harsh environments of conifer-ous forests. This lichen cannot be cultivated in any form.

This symbiosis of fungus and algae absorbs moisture from the humid air. It stands with its roots on the ground and takes its nutrients straight from the air. Reindeer moss is an important indicator of air purity. Air pollutants are a threat to it.

Moss reacts inherently to changes in air humidity. In dry air moss becomes dry and brittle, needing cautious handling. In humid air it becomes soft and strong, withstanding almost any kind of handling.

The beauty of reindeer moss lies in its multidimensional structure and round-shaped upper surface. Each sprig of moss is unique; you will not find two that are similar.

We at Polarmoss care for the environment we operate in. Reindeer moss is only hand-picked; we always leave the forest cared for. We make sure the moss has enough time to rest and grow between picking periods. The same area can be picked after 5 to 10 years. We also make sure new pickers always receive training when they join our team.

Polarmoss Flex elements are a contemporary and classy way to bring a touch of nature inside by creating unique internal surfaces from them.

Flex elements are lightweight and easy to install seamlessly even on large wall surfaces. Whether used in private residences or public spaces, such as lobbies, offices, and restaurants, they add an impressive dimension to the room.

The available colors offer the possibility to design solutions with a variety of styles and tones. The element’s bendability makes it ideal to be used also on curved surfaces. Individual artistic solutions are limitless, created by using multiple colors of Flex elements.

Dynamic accent with Polarmoss Islands

Polarmoss Island is a dynamic object that accents interior design.

The origin of the design of this piece of art was a group of islands. Islands are available in three different sizes; the shape in each size is a bit different. Used together, they add a noticeable rhythm to interior design.

Islands can be attached on the wall with an installation plate developed especially for this purpose. This special installation on a cork base makes it possible to make different adjustments for it on the wall and also to move it easily from the wall onto a table and back.

Polarmoss Island is available in several beautiful colors. Used as a single item it serves as a highlight, and used as a large group of Islands it makes a spec-tacular interior design solution.

Polarmoss Sphere is a beautiful object that enhances interior design.

Sphere—a ball shape being one of the most familiar objects we know—is designed to bring delight to the upper part of a room. There are three sizes of Spheres available. Used in groups, hanging at the same or different levels, they form an interesting dialogue.

Spheres can be hung below each other, offering more imaginative ways to use them.

Polarmoss Sphere can also be placed on a table or bowl. Used singly or in groups, in one or several colors, they add a soft and appealing highlight to the interior.

The moss in the Polarmoss interior design products is an effective fire-resis-tant material and retards the ignition of the underlay material used. Polarmoss interior design products absorb sound, in particular the frequen-cies at which speech occurs.

Polarmoss products are meant only for indoor use and do not need any special maintenance.

When air humidity is under 40 % the moss becomes brittle. Then the reindeer moss should only be touched with utmost care. After the humidity has risen, the moss becomes soft again. Moss can dry out and soften several times without harm to the product.

To make a dry moss product soft, as a temporary solution, it is possible to use a small amount of soft water sprayed from a mechanical spray bottle. It is not recommendable to spray too often.

Polarmoss interior design products can be cleaned gently with a dust brush of a vacuum cleaner.
