    CITIES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

Fascinating is the history ofWarsaw, Polands capital.Especially interesting are the changes and transfor-mations it went through during the last years.

Carefully reconstructed after the war time totaldestruction, the Royal Castle is the most importantsymbol of national heritage. Next to the castlespreads the Old Town with its medieval urban layout. Its narrow streets and the Old Town Square are lined

with beautiful period houses. This atmospheric areais full of little cafs, restaurants, shops with sou-

venirs, museums, art galleries and street stalls sellingpaintings and drawings. Thousands of Varsovians andtourists fill the Castle Square and the Old TownSquare, especially on those days when they host artisticshows, music concerts or performances of folk groups.Cracowwas the countrys capital during the medievaland Renaissance times, the periods of Polands great-est political, cultural and economic development. TheRoyal Castle and the Cathedral on the Wawel Hill arethe treasury of national mementoes. Tourists visitingCracow would never miss the Royal Chambers withthe worlds largest collection of tapestries, the CrownTreasury, the interiors of the Cathedral which wit-nessed most of the royal coronations or its crypts

which are the last resting place for most of the Polishmonarchs. Youth from all over the world is especially

visible among thousands of foreign visitors coming toCracow every year. Cracow attracts them thanks tothe special ambience of the Old Town where eachhouse is a historical monument; its colourful Market

Square offers a wealth of historical mementoes andmuseum collections. While in Cracow, one must notmiss Wieliczka with its famous salt mine started in themedieval times and still in operation; old and the mostattractive sections of the mine are open to visitors.

    ENDOWED BY NATURE

Poland was lavishly endowed by Nature and many of its

treasures managed to survived untouched by the dam-ages and transformations of human civilisation. Thereare still many areas in Poland where Nature has its way. Most of them lie within the boundaries of national parksand strict nature reserves. Some parts of the country aresparsely populated and covered by old forests and largecomplexes of woods.Poland is becoming more and more popular with naturelovers who can find here rare natural attractions and

watch nature in its unspoilt state. Our countrys offer ofspending leisure time in this way is getting richer from

    year to year.
