Solidarity movement, Gdansk was the scene of themomentous events that shaped the modern historyof Europe. The spirit of freedom is present everywhere,in the architecture of the Old Town houses, the beautifulsandy beaches and the towering shipyard cranes. In the shadow of the shipyard cranes stands the

European Solidarity Centre. It is an exhibition hallwhich opened in August 2014 to tell the story ofthe triumph of the Polish popular movement overcommunism and the power of the people united totopple the regime in a non–violent way.Gdansk attracts with its modern, cosmopolitan

lifestyles and the aura of centuries old tradition. It hosts many festivals and international sports

events and is the undisputed World Capital ofAmber. It was recommended by the UK’s travelguide Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel as oneof the world’s top ten city breaks. Also The NewYork Times praised Gdansk as one of the forty mosttourist–friendly cities in the world and the Lonely Planetwebsite named it the top visitor’s choice in Poland.

POLAND 2015Their increasing popularity owes to the distinctive

mix of traditional cooking with contemporary trends, which perfectly complement each other. The chefsof Gdansk rely on the highest quality ingredientsand the philosophy of Slow Food. They are perfectlyaware that food is a serious business and haste canonly spoil it. Produce is obtained mainly from smalland medium sized local farms where quality comesfirst. Meat and vegetables both come from organicfarms and fish are only line caught. To stay ahead of the competition local chefs create

new flavours or resurrect old recipes to serve new, exciting delicacies and menus. This approach placesGdansk at the top table of Poland’s culinary attractionsand is one of the main reasons to visit this wonderfulcity. The proof is in the pudding, as they say, so doclick on www.pomorskie–prestige.eu and find out foryourself.Sopot is without doubt the most celebrated coastal

resort in Poland, but its fame did not come by chance. The city has made its way to the top through persistenteffort to complement a hundred years of traditionwith investment in modern infrastructure. In the 19th century Sopot was a popular spa, famous

for its healing baths and mineral waters. As timewent by, Sopot’s offer was enhanced with massage,

dry baths and irradiation. In the 1920’s Sopot gainedthe status of an international spa resort. For visitorsfrom all over Europe who used to come to the Polishseaside, a stay in Sopot was considered not onlybeneficial to one’s health, but also as an importantsocial occasion.

Sopot calms, and stirs your sensesSopot, currently inhabited by almost 40,000 people,

is home to more than a dozen top class SPA centres. They offer an astounding variety of treatments andSPA products, from exotic massage to traditionaltreatment and practically everything in between. What all local Spa & Wellness clinics have in commonis that they all draw on the riches of the Baltic Sea.Salts, amber and algae are essential ingredients ofmany unique treatments.Sopot also has another, fun–loving side. Monte

Cassino Street, popularly called “Monciak”, is thelocal landmark and a symbol of the night lifeallures. Czekolada, Spatif, Soho, Atelier, Versalka –for club–goers in Sopot these are all familiar names. The city’s appeal is a combination of fin–de–sièclearchitecture and top rated entertainment, givingSopot a distinctive character of a fashionable, vibrant, all–season destination.Gdynia is the youngest city in the metropolitan

conglomerate called Tri–City. It may not have athousand years’ old history like its better–knownneighbour, Gdansk, but it is proud to be a modern,

20th century city whose life started in the Art Decoperiod of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Gdynia saw a rapidgrowth during the post–war era and acquired a post–modern character due to extensive redevelopmentin post–communist Poland. Gdynia is a dynamic, vibrant city, focused on attracting business, sportsevents and tourism. The city is well–known for itsdesign and creative industries and for hosting anumber of themed events, such as Gdynia DesignDays.Gdynia is often referred to as “a city made of the

sea and dreams”, which is a tribute to its extraordinaryorigins. It came to life on the wave of Poland’seuphoria about regaining independence in 1918following two centuries of foreign rule. At a paceunprecedented for the pre–war era, in the span ofjust ten years, a modern port city sprung intoexistence on the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. A successful start was just the beginning. During thecoming few years the city will undergo anotherfar–reaching re–development, which can only becompared in scale and extent to the city’s meteoricrise between the 1920’s and 1930’s. Another milestonewill be marked when the vast industrial spacesoccupied by harbour installations, shipyards, fishingindustries and processing plants are reclaimed for

urban re–development. These spaces are consideredprime locations, situated in the very heart of the city, surrounded on three sides by the sea. Where heavyindustry once existed, Gdynia will gain a new centre, with restaurants, hotels, services, offices, housingdevelopments and welcoming public spaces consistingof wide boulevards along the piers, marinas and theSailing Museum soon to be erected.

Major tourist attractions in Warmiaand Masuria

The Old Town in Elblag is a popular meeting placefor Elblag residents and is also the focus of manycultural events. There are many significant Elblagmonuments which you can visit, for example St. NicolasCathedral in the Old Town is the most significantsacred building in the city. Inside you can discoversacred historic relics. Beside the Cathedral lies thehistoric Church Path, which is an enchantingpassageway between tenement houses. At StaryRynek you will find the Market Gate, which is one ofthe most distinctive and also recognizable monumentsin the town. And next to the Gate stands the monumentof the legendary celebrated baker, who saved thecity from the invasion of the Teutonic Knights inthe 16th century.Bazantarnia Forest, full of wooded hills, beautiful

valleys, and mysterious ravines, is a favourite recreationalplace for residents of Elblag. You will not want to miss a pleasure cruise on the

incomparable Elblag Canal. Thanks to the uniqueslipways and other equipment used to transport the

boats on land, travellers can overcome the hundred–metre difference in water levels between Elblag andOstróda. This unique world–class attraction will re–openin 2015, following renovation.Construction work on the canal was begun in 1844

by Dutch engineer Georg Jacob Steenke. Measuring147 km in total length, the canal gained its Polishname from the longest stretch between Ostróda andElblag (82 km). The famous stretch between Maldytyand Elblag utilises unique hydro– technical solutions.Steenke copied engineering technologies fromother countries, notably the Morris Canal in the USA,which was the prototype of Elblag Canal. What issurprising is that in this day and age the machineryand the Masuria canal work tirelessly transporting

canoes, ships, and boats on grass, perversely workingagainst a natural barrier in the form of a 100–metredifference in water levels between Lakes Druznoand Pniewo. There are five inclined planes locatedin Buczyniec, Katy, Olesnica, Jelenie, and Calunyover which boats are pulled by ropes. This olddesign is based solely on the strength of the

water, which can be seen in one of the enginerooms. The inclined planes range between 350 to550 meters in length, and the cruise .... across thegrass takes about 20 minutes.

Nearby Elblag you can play golf atSand Valley Golf & Country Club.Sand Valley is a club built for its members to enjoy.

It was also built for their guests to remember andcherish. It’s hoped that the members will, on a dailybasis, embrace the challenge offered by this classicgolf course that is exposed to the elements of wind, rain, and drought. Also that the guests will headhome with memories of every single hole they haveplayed.Playing golf in Sand Valley is different to the experience

offered by most modern golf courses. They believethat golf is best played, by friends playing againsteach other vs. playing for score, and that walking isan essential part of a great round of golf.Sand Valley offers wide and rumpling fairways,

and heavily contoured greens. This is how the coursehas been designed and built, and this is how it ismaintained. Providing firm and fast conditionsthroughout the golf course makes for a rewardingexperience for all levels of golfer.Sand Valley looks different than most modern

courses, as designers Lassi Pekka Tilander and TonyRistola have created a course that in many waysresembles the grand golf courses built during theearly 20th century. The construction and on–site design work was led

by Tony Ristola, whose incredible crafts–manshipcan be seen throughout the course. Lassi PekkaTilander is responsible for the natural routing of the

course and, with that, the majority of the strategiesfor the golf holes. But most importantly, both golf coursearchitects involved in the project have been workingunder the premise that Sand Valley should embracethe design ideals of the early 20th century, when the greatmajority of the most legendary golf courses were created. The result is that playing golf in Sand Valley is

very different to most modern golf courses. Thefairways are very wide, there is very little water inplay, there is no penalizing bunkers on the course, which is always maintained to be firm and fast. Infact, despite not being a seaside course, there are fewcourses that play more links–like than Sand Valley. Also, the course is not difficult per se, but was designedto test the players’ judgment, decision– making, andshot–making skills.

Certainly, players who are unwilling to adjust theirgame to the prevailing conditions will make the courseplay difficult. Conversely, those who successfully take on

the challenge of planning their way around thecourse will be rewarded by good scores and a wonderfulfeeling of having overcome a true test of golf.If you enjoy luxury then Sand Valley Villas are

just the place for relaxation after a satisfyinground. The stunning Villas and Clubhouse, onlymetres away from the 1st tee box, are styled in theScandinavian traditions of simplicity and function. The Villas house 4 to 12 people and are equippedwith saunas, while the larger houses come completewith a private swimming pool or jaccuzzi. For further information visit www.sandvalley.pl
