Poker, the great American card game,

is an international mix out of various card games from Asia and europe. The name probably comes from the French game known as Poque which was played at the end of the 17th Century.

The game

Hold’em is a variant of Poker played with community cards. Two main variants of this game are Texas Hold’em and Omaha.

A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 people can play. For each game one of the players is designated as the dealer and a dealer button is placed in front of that player. After each game this button moves clockwise from player to player around the table. This way each player eventually arrives at the strategic advantage of being the last one who needs to speak during a round.

Object of the game

The object of the game is to win the pot. The pot is the com-bined total of all the bets made during that game. There are two ways to get to that goal.either you win by having the highest hand at the showdown. Or you win the pot because all the other players fold before the showdown.

Play of the hand

DeTeRMINING WHO WIll GeT THe FIRsT DeAleR BuTTON

When the table is opened for play, the player who gets the first dealer button is chosen by each player getting one card dealt face up. If you get the highest card with the highest suit (Dia-monds, Hearts, spades, Clubs) you get the dealer button.

COMPulsORY BeTs

Before the deal for the first hand, the first player (in a clockwise direction) after the player with the dealer button sets up the small blind and the next player sets up the big blind.

No other players have to pay to enter the game. If there are only two players then the dealer opens the small blind and the other player opens the big blind.

INITIAl DeAl

Play begins with each player being dealt two cards (Texas) or four cards (Omaha) face down, beginning with the first player after the dealer button. The cards are known as hole cards.

FIRsT BeTTING ROuND

The player after big blind talks first and has the following options:

The player can

1. fold - stop playing2. call - bet money up to the value of the big blind3. raise - bet money to the level of the table limit (if a limit is in place)

All the following players, including the one with the dealer button, have the same options.

THe sMAll BlIND PlAYeRmust, as long as he/she wants to remain in the game, make up the difference between his/her blind and the highest bet made so far.

THe BIG BlIND PlAYeRhas, when it is his/her turn, one further option, the live blind. If all the players have only bet up to the level of the big blind, the big blind player can continue the betting round by raising the big blind as far as the limit (if there is one). This option is only valid for the first round and only once.

After all the players have declared and placed their bets, the first round is closed and the dealer lays three cards, known as the flop, open in the middle of the table.

Bets - an overview

The amount of a bet is subject to a low and/or high limit. The players at the table agree before the start what the limits will be for the game.

sPlIT lIMITTwo betting limits are agreed upon. The lower limit applies to the first two rounds of betting, the higher limit applies to the last two rounds. A maximum of three raises per round are pos-sible.

sPReAD lIMITA pre-agreed broad band the players can choose from.For instance, if a spread limit between 10-50 euro is agreed upon, then bets and raises between 10 and 50 euros can be made in each round.

POT lIMITBets can only be made to the value of the current pot.

NO lIMITThe complete table stake (all the player’s chips on the table) can be bet at any one time.

MINI GlOssARY

“BlINDs PleAse!”The dealer asks the players to place their bets for the next game.

sMAll BlINDCompulsory bet by the first player after the player button before the game can begin.

BIG BlINDCompulsory bet for the second player after the dealer button.

BluFFAn attempt to deceive the other players regarding the value of the cards in hand.

CHIPA value token issued by the Casino in lieu of currency. However, in Poker, cash can also be used.

DeAleRCasino personnel who deals the cards. They are exclusively paid out of the money put in the tronc (trunk).

DeAleR BuTTONshows which player is the designated dealer for that game.

CAllWhen you place a bet equal to the previous bet.

CHeCKWhen you want to stay in the game but not place a bet. You can only check if no other bets have been placed in the betting round.

FOlDWhen players throw in their cards.

RAIseWhen you increase the bet made by a preceding player.

POTThe pot is the pile of chips that accumulates during the round.

sHOWDOWNAfter the last betting round, the player with the highest value hand wins the pot.

TABleWhere the players sit and the game is played.

TAXThe percentage taken by the Casino for the game.

TIPGratuities given to the Casino personnel.

TRONC (TRuNK)The Casino personnel is paid from the money placed in the tronc.
