the way, the guide is now up to version 3.00! Wehave made

several changes to the guide that should bring thisguide

up to speed for the English release in March.

* Thanks to serebii.net, various names of the Englishversion have been revealed, including your other

genderrival's names, team rocket executives, various itemnames, and a few locations that were not in the

originalGSC. They have been changed in this version of the

guideto reflect the English version of the game.

The Poketholon has been changed to Pokeathlon, andthe

Technique stat is now the Skill stat. The Pokedexsection

has been edited to reflect these changes.

* Added the Kanto guide up to the Viridian Gym

* Pokeathlon stats and Move Tutor info up to theSinnoh Dex

have been added

* Japanese/English changes added to the Changes FAQsection.

If anything has been changed from what serebii says,or any

new info is revealed, I will add it to the guide. Ifyou

see anything that references the Japanese version,then let

me know.

As far as the next update goes, I will try to get theUpdated Pokemon League, Cerulean Cave, and Mt.

Silver andthe final battle in before or around the release of

HGSSin North America.

March 09, 2010: Only several more days until HG/SS is released in theUnited States! Here is a update to help finish up a

bunchof things.

* Added the Endgame Guide section. This covers therematch

against the Elite Four, Mt. Silver, and the finalbattle

against the former Champion.

* Added the Battle Frontier guide from my Platinumguide,

and corrected it for HGSS.

* Added a variety of Legendary areas, including twoof the

Legendary Birds, and Suicune.

Originally, this update was going to contain info onCerulean Cave/Mewtwo and Seafoam/Articuno, but I

wanted toget the info on the updated Elite Four and Mt. Silverbefore the game comes out in the US. Hopefully, they

shouldbe in Version 3.11, which I will try to get out

before theUS version comes out.

As for updates, I am going to try to do at least one

moreupdate before it is released. If there is any major

thingsrevealed before the release, such as any English

names andthe like, I will try to add it to the guide. It

might takeme a few days to get through HGSS, so bear with me

when itcomes to updates.

probably picked up HGSS from your local store. Thisupdate

is mostly a few corrections from the Japaneseversion.

* Changed the info on the old man in the beginning ofCherrygrove

* Renamed all instances of Tin Tower to Bell Tower.

* Changed the rival's first encounter from ??? toPasserby

Boy.

* Re-did the Game Corner section of Goldenrod.

* Added the questions the lady at the GoldenrodRadio Tower

asks you.

I will be adding more as I play the English version.

Nintendo has also announced that the Yellow Forrestevent

for the Pokewalker will become available on Aprilthe 1st

When you first step out, Marill will come up to you and then leave andyouwill see the first glimpse of the opposite gender rival. If you areplayingas a male, your opposite gender rival will be Lyra, a new addition totheGSC story and a replacement for Crystal's Kris female character. Femalecharacters will meet Ethan, the original protagonist from GSC.

You can explore a little bit and see a red haired boy in the window,but fornow continue to Prof. Elm's lab (The big building in the upper left). Goinside and he will ask you to run a errand for him and let you choosebetween3 Pokemon.

* Totodile, a water Pokemon* Chikorita, a grass Pokemon

* Cyndaquil, a fire Pokemon

In this game, Cyndaquil is actually easy mode, Totodile is medium, andChikorita is hard to use against the gyms, so choose wisely. The Pokemonyou choose will also appear behind you now. Before you leave, Prof.Elm'said will give you 5 Potions.

After you exit the lab, Ethan or Lyra will appear and talk to you andleaveagain. Once that is finished, go talk to your mother and she will giveyouthe Pokegear. It is similar to how it worked in the original GSCversions,but it now has touchscreen support. Leave your house and try to go westand Prof. Elm will appear and give you his phone number. Once you areready,head to Route 29.

Once you enter Cherrygrove, a old man at the entrance will show youaround and

then give you the Running Shoes, a staple of the series since RSE thatallowsyou to run when you hold the B Button. If you tap the shoes on the touchscreen, they will allow you to run without pressing the B Button.However,keep in mind that wild pokemon will appear more if you are using theRunningShoes, so you may want to walk while you are in grass.

You might want to heal up at this point at the Pokemon Center. Youcannotcapture Pokemon at the moment, so you will have to wait. You can buyPotionshowever. Once you are ready, head over to Route 30. When you try toleave,the old man will stop you and give you a Pokegear add-on called the MapCard. It will allow you to see the map via the Pokegear and keep trackofany roaming Pokemon you have active.

Route 30 has changed a little bit since the old days. You still do nothaveany Pokeballs, but you can get a Apricorn Box from the man in the firsthouseyou see. It will allow you to get Apricorns from the different lookingtreesaround Johto.

You can't go up the west side of the route yet, so continue to the eastsideup to Mr. Pokemon's house. Inside, you will find Prof. Oak and Mr.Pokemontalking and Mr. Pokemon will give you the Odd Egg key item and heal yourPokemon. After that, Prof Oak will give you the Johto Pokedex and hisphone number. Head outside and Prof. Elm will call you and say that oneof his

Pokemon has been stolen.

Head back to Cherrygrove and then to Route 29 (Make sure your Pokemonarehealed). A red haired boy will appear and you will find out he was theone

Once you are ready, head back to Route 229 and Ethan or Lyra will bethere andexplain how you capture Pokemon. After he/she shows you, they will giveyou 5Pokeballs. You can also now buy Pokeballs from the Pokemarts.

Now that you have some Pokeballs, you can finally access the early partofRoute 46. Head to Route 29 go on the upper part of the route until youfind a

Not much you can do on the southern part of Route 46. There are a fewrarePokemon you can capture, such as Geodude and Spearow. When you try to goNorth, you will find that the path is blocked due to a ledge. You won'tbeable to reach the other side until much later in the game.

A little different from the first game, the ruins are now locked andthe onlyway to activate them is to go to the one open ruin on the right side.Inside,you will find a Kabuto puzzle. Unlike the first game, you now use thetouchscreen to figure it out, and you have to rotate the pieces with yourstylus.Once you solve it, you will drop down into the ruins.

Inside, a researcher will talk to you and then give you the UnownReport, aspecial Pokedex that records what Unown (A special psychic Pokemonexclusiveto the Ruins of Alph). It will only record them when you capture them,andwill list what the Unown mean in English. You can access the UnownReport viathe Key Items slot. Once you are ready, head down to find a ladder to

get out.

At this point, the other ruins are sealed, so you cannot get all theUnown atthis point. Continue back to Violet city.

A few things you can do before continuing. Talk to the man behind thePokemartand select the last option and he will twirl around and take you to thetrainer's school. If you have a Bellsprout, you can trade for a Onix in the lower righthousethat is near the Pokemon center. It will be helpful for the upcomingbattleagainst the Gym Leader. You can capture a Bellsprout by going to Route30,although they are uncommon. Once you are ready, go north to SproutTower.

Once inside, go up the left ladder. On the second floor, you will startfighting Pokemon like Rattata

Once you beat Falkner, you will get TM51 (Roost) and the Zephyr Badge.AllPokemon you get in trades up to level 20 will now obay you, and you cannowuse Rock Smash out of battle as well.

After you leave the Gym, Prof. Elm will call you and tell you to meetup withhis aide at the Pokemart. Go to the Pokemart and talk to the aide toget aegg with Togepi in it. When you leave the Pokemart, one of the Kimonogirlsfrom the original G/S/C will come up to you and talk about your egg andrunoff.

Once you are ready, go south of the Pokemart until you reach Route 32.

Right as soon as you go down you will see a gatehouse to the west. Itonly

leads to the Ruins of Alph, so leave that alone for now. Go down alittle moreand a man on the route will give you a Miracle Seed.

Not much else to do on the route. You can capture some higher levelBellsproutand Mareep, a electric Pokemon that has a pretty decent evolution. Atthe endis a Pokemon center and the entrance to Union Cave.

If you go south of the Pokemon center, you will find a rock you canbreak withRock Smash. Break it, and it will lead to a path that has a Shell Bellin aitem ball. The Shell Bell, when attached to a Pokemon, recovers HPevery timethe Pokemon attacks.

As soon as you get near the well, you see a Team Rocket member talk toa guyand blocking the well. You cannot enter it yet, so go west. Head to thePokemon Center first to heal up and then look around the town.

As you can see, Team Rocket has invaded the town and won't let youenter thegym. You can go west and find a gatehouse that will lead to the Ilex

Forest,but you cannot get far since you do not have cut. Once you are ready tocontinue, go to the upper left house and talk to the man inside (Kurt, aguy that makes Pokeballs out of the Apricorns you have beencollecting). Onceyou talk to him, he will run off to the well.

Head back to where the well is, and you will see that the rocket memberisgone. Go down the pathway and go up the ladder to enter the well.

Charcoal house from Azalea. He mentions that several of his Farfetch'dhaverun off, and wants you to go get them.

The trick to capturing them is sneaking up behind them, and thatbecomes hardif you step on the twigs. The first time you go to the right, you willalwaysstep on the twigs and have the Farfetch'd notice you. After you dothat, goto the right and avoid the other set of twigs and go around the rightpathuntil you are behind the Farfetch'd. Press A and you will capture it.

For the second one, chase it to the right side by going up the left andpressing A. After that, go back down and on the right path. Step on thefirst set of twigs to make the Farfetch'd look to the right, and thengo upand ignore the second patch and go down and press A.

After that, the owner will show up and give you HM01 Cut. Teach it toone ofyour Pokemon and then cut down the tree that is in front of you. Also,if yougo back to Azalea Town and go to the building that is on the far rightbottom,talk to the assistant inside and he will give you the Charcoal item. Itwillincrease fire type moves when it is attached to a Pokemon.

Once you cut down the tree, go up and then up to the left. Then go rightand up. After that, you will meet one of the Kimono girls again. Pressthe topoption and your Pokemon will jump around and she will leave.

There is also a path on the right side that will lead you to a big guythat isheadbutting a tree. If you talk to him, he will teach any of yourPokemonHeadbutt, and he will do this any number of times that you ask.

Go left to find the exit. In the gatehouse, talk to the woman with theButterfree to get TM12 (Taunt).

Route 34 is full of various trainers to fight and new Pokemon to catch.Oneof those Pokemon is Abra, a very hard to catch Pokemon unless you havesleepmoves. Its also a good route to gain experience on, since you will wantyourPokemon to be about level 16 or above.

Another landmark on this route is the daycare/breeding center. When yougetclose, Ethan/Lyra will appear and talk to the Daycare couple. As itturns out,they are Ethan/Lyra's grandparents. He/she will then take you inside andintroduce you to his/her grandma and give you their phone number phonenumber.

Once you exit, the old man will give you his phone number as well. Youcan nowuse the center for leveling your Pokemon (1 step = one EXP point), orput twoPokemon in and create a egg if they are compatible and a male and female(Look at the breeding guide for more info).

Near the end of the route, if you go to the right, you can find TM63(Embargo)in the grass in a item ball out in the open.

Once you are ready, head north to Goldenrod City.

The Goldenrod Underground is located south of the game corner and alsonearthe Name Raters house at the north part of Goldenrod. When you firstenter,Ethan or Lyra will appear and give you the Accessory Case. While thereisno contests in Johto, they can be used for dressing up your Pokemon forpictures.

Once you are in the underground, you will find several trainers. Thereis alsoa variety of different things that appear down there on certain days.TheBargain Shops appears on Monday mornings, and has sell-able items thatyou canbuy for slightly lower.

The two hairdressers that raise your Pokemon's happiness appear onTuesday,Thursday, and Saturday for the older brother (Costs 500p, but you get

morehappiness on your Pokemon), and the younger brother shows up on Sunday,Wednesday, and Friday (300p, but less happiness gain).

Finally, the herb shop sells various bitter herbs that are cheaper thenbuyingthem from a Pokemon shop, but decrease your Pokemon's happiness.

You can also take pictures by talking to the guy on the upper rightside. Youcan take a special picture dressed in a Team Rocket uniform.

The game corner side quest is slightly different depending on whatversionyou are playing. You can find the game corner above the Pokemon Center.

JAPANESE VERSION:==============================================================================

In the game corner, you can find TM78 (Captivate). To play any of theslots,

you will need to go to the underground portion of Goldenrod that issouth ofthe game corner.

The slots are similar to how they were in the past: You can pay either1, 2 or3 coins and depending on how many you put in you can line them upseveralways. You can also get a bonus round if you line up 3 Pokeballs. Themachines

The game corner has been completely been redesigned. The TM forCaptivate isno longer located there, and the building is now only a card table withaNPC called Mr. Game with two old gentlemen that act as thereceptionist. Youcan't buy coins anymore, either. On the other hand, the mini-game nolonger

requires you to spend coins. If you talk to Mr. Game, he will give youtheCoin Case.

The new game is a minesweeper-like game called Voltorb Flip. The gameis abit complicated when you first do it, but it is basic once you figureit out:

There are 5 rows with 5 blocks in each, with a total of 25 blocks totalforthe entire game. On the right side and on the bottom is the number ofVoltorbsthat is on that row, and what the number adds up to. So, if a row has a05at the top and 0 Voltorb, that means that there is all 1s there.

You gain coins depending on how many multiples you can get. Say, forexamplethat you get 1 to begin with, you will get 1 coin. If you keep finding1s,then it will not go up, but if you find a 2x or 3x, you will doubleyour coinsand get 2 or 3 coins.

If you find another 2x or 3x, the amount you have in the CoinsCollected in

Current Game will be multiplied. However, if you run into a Voltorb, itwillbe game over and you will lose any coins for the current game.

You can, however, collect any coins you have with the current game bypressingthe B button. Any coins you collected during your game will be added toyourcoin case. You level up by finding all the 2 and 3 numbers on the board.

The best advise I have is to knock out the rows with 0 Voltorb first,and thentackle the other rows. If you don't feel too brave, you can quit aftertakingout the 0 voltorb rows and still have a decent amount of coins leftover mostof the time.

have a 2or 3; skipping those squares improves your chances a lot.

If the number plus the voltorb count for a row or column totals to 5,don'tbother flipping any squares there, it's only 1's and Voltorbs. For

example,if the row says 4 / 1, then there is one Voltorb and 4 1's in that row.

If the number plus the voltorb count is bigger than 5, that tells youhowmany "extras" or scorable points there are in that row or column. Forexample, if the column says 4 / 2, the total is 6, one more than 5;

thistells you that there is one scoring square in that column (the column

will betwo Voltorbs, two 1's and one 2).

However, it's not always that simple. When the number of "extras"getshigher, you can't be sure how many scoring squares there are. For

example, arow that is 6 / 1 could be : (one voltorb, three 1's and one 3) or

(onevoltorb, two 1's and two 2's).

The strategy I use is :- First flip all the squares in rows and columns with 0 Voltorbs

- Identify the rows and columns that don't have any "extras" and use

the memofunction to mark them all (I mark them as a "1" since that's the

best that

is there, but you could mark them as being either "voltorb" or "1").I

usually never flip these marked squares.- Pick the row with the highest number of extras that are still

unknown (ifyou're greedy) or pick the row with extras that has the lowest

number ofVoltorbs (if you're cautious).

column. This isn't guaranteed to be safe, sometimes you will losewhen you

There is a tent on the upper right side of Goldenrod with a old maninside.He will allow you to change your Pokemon's nickname if you talk to him.

If you go on the right path in the middle and go down, you can find theCycling Shop. Talk to the man inside and he will give you a free bike.It is a little different then its D/P/Pl incarnation, since it does nothavetwo speeds and is hard to turn even though it is at normal speed.

Once you capture or defeat the Sudowoodo, you can buy Mulch at theflowershop (Growth Mulch, Stable Mulch, Damp Mulch, and Gooey Mulch for 200peach).

There is a lady in a house to the right of the Department Store thatwill letyou know how your Pokemon like you. This is handy if you have a Pokemonyouwant to evolve from a happiness evolution.

If you go to the gym, you will find a woman blocking the way. She tells

youthat Whitney, the Gym leader, is at the Radio Tower on the west side ofGoldenrod. Head to the radio tower and talk to the attendant next toWhitney(The red haired girl) and answer the following:

After you beat her, Whitney will start crying and won't give you thebadge.When you try to leave, one of the trainers will stop you and tell herto talkto Whitney again. She will then give you the Plain Badge and TM45Attract.
