The Koloa District is the name ofamodern political-judicial districtencompassing the south shore ofKaua‘i.In ancient times,the Koloa District waspart ofa larger district called Kona.Then,Hawaiians used a system ofresourcemanagement that divided districts intopie-shaped wedges called ahupua‘a thatran from the mountain to the ocean.TheKoloa Heritage Trail travels through fourahupua‘a.From east to west,they are:Maha‘ulepu,Pa‘a,Weliweli and Koloa.

There is frequent discussion abouthow Koloa got its name.Meaningsinclude long-jointed sugar cane,a nativeduck and a steep rock in the area.Certainly,the sugar cane industry putKoloa on the map,creating the rise ofimmigrant labor resulting in the richmulticulture ofKoloa’s people today.Po‘ipuis part ofthe Koloa ahupua‘a.One meaning ofthe name Po‘ipuiscrashing,as in waves crashing.
