As I have been looking back at my two years as President of your ISM New Jersey affiliate, I’ve been review-

ing all of the great dinner programs and educational opportunities our volunteers have put together for you. Our dinner speakers have ranged from a Paranor-mal Investigations company to Rutgers Professors to how PSE&G utilized Social Media during Super Storm Sandy. Our Professional Development offerings have covered contract negotia-tions & software acquisition, metrics & analytics for the Supply Chain, Lean Six-Sigma & Customer Relationship Management. We’ve also continued to offer the more basic programs for new entrants into the Supply Chain field. Our Webinar series has continued its rapid growth as our New Jersey mem-bers have been joined by members from other affiliates around the country. The breadth of our programs and opportuni-ties has been amazing. The most amazing aspect is that it is brought to you through the efforts of our VOLUNTEERS! If we had a full time paid staff they could not do better. We are lucky to have these very busy people finding time to be creative on our behalf. And we are lucky to have our Executive Director, Kathy Perna handling all of our administrative ef-forts, shepherding us (is it really like herding cats?) and keeping us moving in the right direction. I have been blessed with a fantastic core group that has

served as our Executive Committee and look forward to seeing them take their next steps into new leadership roles for the affiliate. We have seen the ranks of our committee members swell with new faces and talents. We have a vibrant student membership and we need to continue to seek their input on what our programs should look like in the future. This will be their affiliate someday soon. I’ve also been the beneficiary of the advice and guidance of our esteemed group of Trustees. They are a very dedicated and hard working group of people with many years of combined experience. They have overseen our compliance with the rules and regula-tions of the national ISM while keeping our bylaws and policies current. Their efforts have helped us keep pace with a rapidly changing world. All of this work and effort would be nothing if not for our membership. While many other associations have contracted over the last few years, the ISM New Jersey continues to maintain its membership and consistently attracts new members. I encourage the student members to convert to a full member when they land that job; whether with us or with an affiliate in the City/State where you find yourself working. I wrote in my first Executive Message as President back in September of 2014 “One of the biggest benefits of membership in ISM-NJ is the ability to Network, the ability to share experi-ences, knowledge and best practices with other Supply Chain professionals”. This has never been so true as it is right now. You can have hundreds of follow-ers and friends but the ability to meet with people and look them in the eye while discussing your world is becom-ing a rare commodity. Continue to take advantage of it. Take a class… Come to a meeting… Volunteer! My deepest thanks to all of you for your hard work, friendship and support.

Through President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initia-tive, the Mandela Washing-ton Fellowship (MWF) has

awarded Dr. Kevin Lyons a research grant to host 25 fellows for a six-week academic and leadership institute. The institute will provide proven methods in civic engagement, business and entre-preneurship, and public administration that the fellows may apply to projects at home. Since 2014, 500 fellows from sub-Saharan Africa who want to serve the public through NGOs or com-mu-nity-based organizations have partici-pated in the fellowship at one of only 30 American universities selected by the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Lyons will be running a track titled “Decision Making for Sustainable Supply Chains, Energy Leaders and Entrepreneurs” targeted specifically for business com-munity fellows.

Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders

The goals of the Mandela Washing-ton Fellowship for Young African Lead-ers are to build and sustain a prestigious network of young Sub-Saharan leaders across critical sectors, cement stronger ties between Sub-Saharan Africa and the United States, and prepare Fellows for follow-on leadership opportunities in Africa. The Institute will examine many of the elements that are contributing to the adoption of sustainability strategies, such as legislation that penalize nega-tive environmental and social impacts, and society’s expectations of business in terms of health, human rights, and the environment. Fellows will be instructed in the basics and in the challenges of environmentally sustainable supply chains in developing countries, sub-Saharan Africa in particular. Fellows will also have the opportunity to spend time with an American host family and Peer Collaborators. Rutgers will divide

its six week courses into six sub-themes that include:

• Sustainability concepts and frame-works

• Sustainable design of products and closed-loop supply chains

• Sustainability opportunities for entrepreneurs

• Net present value and supply chain finance

• Evaluating technology and renew-able energy

• Strategic sustainability and decision analysis and implementation.

ISM NJ can contribute to the in-stitute by becoming mentors to fellows and/or participating in group discus-sions. For more information contact Dr. Lyons at [email protected].
