A Note from Pastor Chris

Upon retirement, I faced the task of sorting all of my

books – what do I keep and what do I give away? I

came across the book, “The Presbyterian Conflict”

written by Ed Rian. His history in the UPCUSA is well

documented. The first time I met Ed, he was a

professor and secretary at Princeton Seminary and a

member of a church where I served as Pastor. I had a

standing invitation to join Ed for lunch at Denny’s –

same table, same waitress and always pancakes with

strawberries. I enjoyed those lunches and will never

forget Ed’s advice; “Never stop reading and always

know that you can be wrong.” Great advice.

I have tried to keep Ed’s advice to keep reading books. One of my

recent favorites is a book about John Polkinghorne, entitled Quantum Leap:

How John Polkinghorne Found God in Science and Religion, written by Dean

Nelson, who is the chair of the Journalism department at PLNU. John started

his career as a physicist and was part of the team that “discovered” quarks

and other unseen bits and pieces of what makes up our universe and how

our universe came into being. At the age of 42, John changed careers and

became an Episcopal Priest. Returning to Cambridge after many years in the

parish ministry he began teaching about the subject of the intersection of

science and religion. I recommend this book to you. It can give us words to

speak and ideas to hold that will help us, as people of faith, to speak with

those whose lives are given over totally to science and technology.

I write this as Holy Week draws near and we are invited to live out

the glorious message of Jesus’ resurrection and his defeat of death on our

behalf – an invitation to live our future in light of God’s grace and Continued on page 6

Endowment

Endowment: Webster's New World dictionary, Noun: That with which something is endowed; specif., any bequest or gift that provides an income for a institution or person. Institution: Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church. Person (or persons): Our congregation now and in the future.

Contribution(s), to the Endowment Fund, whether immediate or in the future, are held in perpetuity, and only the earnings are used for designated purposes. This ensures your gift will be a living memorial. When gifts and bequests are made they should specifically name the: "Endowment Fund of the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church." One of the easiest ways to give is by a personal check. Any amount helps whether it's two digits, three digits or four more in memory of family or friends. Some recent examples the Endowment Fund has helped include: Building and Grounds—Family Life Center roof, facia and window repairs, and Preschool security project. Mission—SERVE project funds for Habitat for Humanity in Southeast San Diego.

MARCH 1—APRIL 12 Drop off items in the Plaza on Sundays or in the Church office.

A Note from Pastor Chris (continued from pg. 1)

eternal love. I ran across something written by Aaron Smith, a

former seminary intern at a church I served in the early 2000s

and is now a seminary professor teaching systematic theology.

Aaron has a brilliant mind and a powerful faith.

Here is what he wrote:

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is not some theological construct to

convince our rational faculties of the meaning of our lives. Jesus’

sacrifice on the cross is the evidence of love that is so deep and so

overwhelming that we cannot deny its claim on our lives. Jesus’

death was torturous, bloody and intentional. Jesus chose to give

his life in this way in order for us to know love and the cost of our

salvation. The Son of God, “though he was in the form of God, did

not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but

emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human

likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and

became obedient to the point of death – even death on the

cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8)

This type of claim cannot be explained solely by science.

Science may be able to describe the physiological reactions to

these events, but cannot explain the why. Our faith in God

speaks to a relationship that is real: a relationship that shapes

who we are, why we are and gives guidance to who we will be.

Easter was and is the defining moment in history, when the

power of love and grace transformed death, from being the end

of all things, into a transition into the Kingdom of God.

Never stop reading and always know that you could be

wrong. Learn more and have an open mind. God will meet you

and change your life.

Shalom,

Chris
