NEXT MEETING TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM AT AZALEA REC CENTER February 2020 POINT IN TIME HOMELESS SURVEY At 5:00am on January 23, Grace Church opened up their community room to use as a meeting spot to count homeless in City Heights creeks and canyon neighborhoods as part of the annual nationwide Point In Time homeless survey. San Diego Canyonlands took the lead on organizing our local event. Council President Georgette Gomez and her entire staff showed up for the third year in a row. Long time neighborhood canyon and creek stewards, North Park Main Street staff, Ocean Discovery Institute staff and other volunteers from the Regional Task Force on Homeless also helped with the counting. Sixty-six homeless individuals were documented in the census tracts that contain Manzanita, Hollywood, Pepper, Swan, and Olivia Canyons and the City Heights portion of Chollas Creek. Very few were seen in the actual canyons and creek, due to the ongoing presence and work of San Diego Canyonlands and volunteers plus the San Diego Police Department Homeless Outreach Team and the Open Space Rangers. The majority of the sixty-six homeless that were counted were documented in and around the parks. Many thanks to all who participated in this important event. POINT IN TIMEHOMELESS SURVEY

At 5:00am on January 23, Grace Church opened up their community

room to use as a meeting spot to count homeless in City Heights creeks

and canyon neighborhoods as part of the annual nationwide Point In

Time homeless survey. San Diego Canyonlands took the lead on

organizing our local event. Council President Georgette Gomez and her

entire staff showed up for the third year in a row. Long time

neighborhood canyon and creek stewards, North Park Main Street staff,

Ocean Discovery Institute staff and other volunteers from the Regional

Task Force on Homeless also helped with the counting.

Sixty-six homeless individuals were documented in the census tracts

that contain Manzanita, Hollywood, Pepper, Swan, and Olivia Canyons

and the City Heights portion of Chollas Creek. Very few were seen in the

actual canyons and creek, due to the ongoing presence and work of San

Diego Canyonlands and volunteers plus the San Diego Police

Department Homeless Outreach Team and the Open Space Rangers.

The majority of the sixty-six homeless that were counted were

documented in and around the parks. Many thanks to all who

participated in this important event.

The City Heights Area Planning Committee (CHAPC) is a locally-elected body meeting monthly that makes recommendations on land use, development, and transportation issues to the City Council and Planning Commission. Please vote - and remember to bring a photo ID or a utility bill or rental agreement to prove your current City Heights residency.

From Linda Pennington: For those who are new in the neighborhood,

Dennis and Jody and I wanted to give you the opportunity to meet Todd

Gloria who served as our District 3 City Councilmember from 2008 to

2012. Our area got cut out of District 3 in 2012 and we were put into the

newly formed Council District 9. Todd continued to serve CD3 from

2012 to 2019. He served as Council President for both of his CD3

terms. Then from August 2013 to March 2014, he was selected to serve

as Interim Mayor after Mayor Filner resigned. In 2016, he was elected

to the California State Assembly to represent the 78th Assembly District

where he currently serves as Majority Whip. He personally represents

diversity as an enrolled member of the Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of

Alaska. He is the son of a hotel maid and a gardener. His Filipino

grandmother worked in a San Diego cannery. He also serves as vice

chair of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus. He is well spoken and

humorous, too. We hope you will come to Burly and the Bean on

February 15 and meet Todd.

Cindy Lapio has been cleaning up our area for quite some time. She has

started driving our alleys, not only finding valuable discarded metal and

other recyclable items that can be sold, but she also talks to any

homeless she sees and encourages them to accept help to get off the

street. To help Cindy pay for gas, I asked her for a list of items that she

can recycle. Call her at 619-822-0247 if you have things to contribute to

this great effort which improves our environment locally and globally.

Thanks to Mark Pennington for taking it upon himself to rescue the

downed carved wood Violet sign in front of 2548 Violet St. The carved

wood signs were created by former neighbor Tom Benson in 1993 with

Community Development Block Grant funds. Repeated string trimming

around the bottom of the post with this sign had removed the paint, the

post had rusted and finally just fell over. Mark cut the bad part off the

post, drove up to Claremont and purchased a slightly smaller post at

Industrial Metals, cut a piece of it off to put in inside the old post with

some shims to make the fit tight, welded it, and dug out the original hole

and reset the repaired post in concrete. Neighbor Scott Hargrove has

committed to repaint the Violet as on close examination, it is starting to

peel. Artist Laurie Carlock was paid by Project CLEAN to refresh the

signs in 2011 and a team of four volunteers – Diana Diehl/Robert

Walters/Shannon Whitmore and Greg Diethrich – repainted all of the

posts that same year. Thanks to all of our wonderful neighbors for their

commitment to making our neighborhood a great place to live.

On December 9, 2019, San Diego opened a first of its kind Navigation Center to assist those who are experiencing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness, by identifying immediate and long-term housing solutions, providing crisis management, accessing benefits that are important to housing stability, case management and housing navigation, and providing on-site access and referrals to medical, mental health and substance use disorder services. Over two dozen partners, including Alpha Project, DMV, and Veterans Affairs, are housed in the same place which means a person who needs help no longer has to get to multiple places to find help. San Diego is leading the way in finding innovative solutions to homelessness.
