SPRING 2016

The latest information on how Point Foundation empowers change through education, mentorship, community service, and leadership development for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students of merit.

More than 400 people joined us at the iconic New York Public Library for our annual Point Honors gala in New York, April 11. The evening included the presentation of the Point Legend Award to Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis, who had just learned that his iconic image will appear on a box in the Wheaties Legends Series. Fellow Olympian Gus Kenworthy introduced Louganis and presented the award to him.

Pete Nowalk, Creator and Producer of ABC’s “How To Get Away With Murder” received the Point Leadership Award, presented to him by Conrad Ricamora and Jack Falahee, who appear in the hit TV series.

APPLICATIONS OVERVIEW

As the late January deadline approached for submitting the Point Foundation Scholarship application, the numbers kept climbing; 2,000 applications, then 2,100 and finally 2,215 completed applications were submitted! From there, 556 applicants advanced to become semifinalists. Thousands of hours have gone into reading applications, phone interviews and preparing for the in-person interviews with finalists at the end of April. The announcement of the 2016 Point Scholar class will be in June.

POINT HONORSNEW YORK

Pete Nowalk (L) was awarded the Leadership Award and Greg Louganis

received the Legend Awardat Point Honors.

Dear Friends,

Speaking in public, in front of hundreds of people, can be very scary. It takes courage, something Point Scholars and Alumni have in abundance. Point Alum Derrick Miller-Handley, and KPMG Point Scholar Tiffany Barillas, spoke to over 400 people who joined us for our Point Honors gala in New York in April. If they were nervous, it did not show. Their forthright voices resonated with the audi-ence and made us proud. Here are excerpts from their remarks.

JorgeValencia

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

POINT ALUM DERRICK MILLER-HANDLEY:

What I would like to do is share with you a few of the things that I have learned being a part of the Point family: Take no one for granted. We need each other. At Point, this means that every member of this family has value and impact. Every scholar, alum, mentor, staff, board member and trustee is a resource, a leader, a shoulder you can lean on.

When I left the bay area to attend school in New York, Point Alumni immediately reached out to help make that transition a smooth one. When I needed support getting my community service project off the ground I knew who to go to. And during one thorny semester when I was having something of an exi- stential crisis, I called my mentor, Grant Shaffer.

Which leads me to something else I have learned: don’t wait to figure out who you are—just get started. Meaning you don’t have to have all the answers, especially to the big questions, in order to self-actualize.

Point, through the tremendous accomplishments of its scholars—each with their own story—has taught me to practice possibility with the intention of accomplishing great things in spite of whatever pain and self-doubt may surface.

TIFFANY BARILLAS

DERRICK MILLER-HANDLEY

KPMG POINT SCHOLAR TIFFANY BARILLAS:

Thanks to one of my mentors I decided to pursue a graduate de-gree. There are not many Latinos, first generation, gender-non conforming individuals in these graduate programs. So it be-came one of my personal goals to continue to break barriers.

I first learned about Point when I was trying to figure out how I was going to pay for grad school. Once I submitted my initial application, the entire Point staff and many others were very helpful in leading me through the rest of the application process and now as a scholar.

Two of my current mentors and role models are also part of the Point family: Jennifer Barbetta and Chris Crespo are individu-als I aspire to be in the business world…

Now I am also a mentor: my mentee Shantel is 16 aspires to also be the first in her family to graduate high school. She identifies as gender fluid, and I’ve been able to help guide her thru the challenges this poses with her family. I’ve also been able to help her plan for the college application process. Her identity and struggles reminds me of mine and I am extremely happy to help her in any way I can.

We are grateful to all our event sponsors, attendees, and volunteers who helped make Point Honors an inspiring evening in support of our scholars.

Point is excited to launch a new program for community college students. The Point Community College Program inspires LGBTQ community college students to fulfill their ambitions of attending a four-year college or university. Students accepted into Point’s Community College Program will receive up to a $3,700 tuition scholarship, professional coaching to apply to four-year institutions, opportunities to network with the Point community, and invitations to attend conferences. The first class of Point Community College Scholarship recipients from Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York, will be announced in June, making for a great LGBTQ Pride Month!

Two Point Scholars planning on pursuing careers in the financial services industry are bullish about their upcoming experiences at Goldman Sachs. Wells Fargo Point Scholar Angela Filley will be joining Goldman Sachs full-time in New York and Kevin Hummer Point Scholar Morgan Cheatham will also be interning this summer in New York.

Filley, who will graduate this semester from Columbia University with a BS in Computer Science, will be starting her full-time position as an analyst in the Technology Division supporting Goldman Sachs Investment Partners. Cheatham is studying Neuroeconomics at Brown University and will be interning in Goldman Sachs’ Investment Banking Division.

Point family currently at Goldman Sachs include Jennifer Barbetta, Vice Chair of Point’s Board of Directors, who is a Partner & Managing Director at Goldman Sachs within the Investment Management Division. Christopher Kawasaki, a Point Alum, is a Vice President on the Management and Strategy team in Goldman Sachs’ Securities Division. The company is a sponsor of Point’s summer 2016 National Leadership Conference and was also a sponsor of Point Honors in April.

“The focus of diversity recruiting at Goldman Sachs goes beyond race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status or military service records,” said Johann Shudlick, Global Head of Diversity Recruiting at Goldman Sachs. “We are searching for candidates whose life experiences, educational credentials, personal challenges, and differentiated skills position them to uniquely and exceptionally contribute to the service of our clients, which is why Point Foundation is such a natural partnership for us.”
