With Open day adding another 10 names to our waiting list, and consumer demand to move into the Village healthy and strong, I was delighted to open my email this morning and see that Frankston Council has issued final approval for building the 4 remaining units in the 900’s. Site works may have already commenced by the time this newsletter is received. The redevelopment works near the Manning Centre continue with a planning permit expected to be lodged shortly for the next stage of units on the area where we recently demolished vacated units. The planning permit for the first stage of the Grant Centre redevelopment is expected to be submitted in early November. We anticipate that this will take some months to work through the Council approval process before moving into the detailed drawing and service planning process that comes after Council approval and in itself takes months of preparation. I hope that by this time next year we can begin to set timeframes for the demolition of the remaining North area apartments and when site works will commence. There are also some minor works to be done in the Lodge music room / kitchen area to improve the quality of the space there. Although these works are very minor, the Lodge is an Aged Care Home so they will require a building permit and the drawings required as part of this process have been requested. Refurbishment works both at Village Baxter and Rosebud Village continue with neither Village having any unsold completely refurbished units, which is very pleasing. There was a large backlog of unit refurbishments that had to be completed for the 15 vacant units at Rosebud Village when it was purchased in April and this process is near completion with additional Units being vacated since then. Units at Rosebud are selling as they are nearing completion and it is pleasing to see community interest in the Village building, in both Villages, units do take approximately 6 months from final key hand back to new resident occupation, so please be assured that even when it looks like not much is happening, the sales / refurbishment process is not currently impacted by any of the negative property market media attention. Enjoy spring in the Village with the warmer days, sunshine and gardens with their beautiful blooms. til next month Kim Jackson, Executive Manager

It was great to welcome so many who came to Parkside on Open Day. The Floral Art Display was
very well supported and we thank all those who participated and the two ladies from Stem by Stem, Towerhill, who judged the entries. The Cake Stall was a favourite too as in other years.
Our final event for the year will be Our Kind of Music on Sunday November 11 at Parkside at 2.30pm. Come and enjoy the program and afternoon tea to follow.

A big thank you to all who contributed towards Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child. The boxes have been filled with gifts of love destined for children who live in needy countries. Many of these children have never received a gift in their lives. The boxes will be shipped to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu and New Guinea.
Many people have been busy knitting and sewing, they have made beanies, shoulder bags and skirts. Others have donated goods, many have sent gifts in envelopes and many have donated online to help with the costs involved in the project. This is truly compassion in action and will help the people of the world to know that they are loved and have not been forgotten. Coordinator Mr Ted McGain – Unit 233 (5971 6949)
Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child
It has been an extremely busy time heading up to the Village Open Day, which turned out to be a beautiful day and a rewarding one to all I’m sure. Now hopefully we can catch up on some sleep and the chores. Now it will be leading up to Christmas activities which seem to be filling up the dates on the calendar already. We have our last market day on the 24th November. Hopefully we will be able to pick up those last minute Christmas gifts. Also don’t forget your tyres pumped on your wheelies and scooters. They are much easier to use and are safer. This month the tyre pumping service will be at the Vegie Shed on Wednesday 7th November 9.30am to 10.00am. Mobility scooter riders did you know that using your scooter with ‘soft’ tyres causes drag on the battery and the motor and your speed? Call in to see Dan from “Mobility Help” and keep those tyres rolling.

Have you ever aspired to play ukulele?? It is a small fun instrument with lots of possibilities. It is easy to learn and great to play with a group of like-minded people. I have been learning for a few months and I would like to teach you to play so that we can have fun together. Please contact me on 59 71 1767 Audrey Mutton.
If you have lived in the village for a while you may remember the last time we collected for Pinchapoo and were able to pass on seven large boxes of toiletries to this wonderful organisation. From their website: "Pinchapoo is proudly responsible for creating a world first cheeky hotel toiletry "pinching" movement more than 10 years ago. Using this concept, we have redistributed more than 1.6 million otherwise wasted personal hygiene products to hundreds of disadvantaged men, women and children around Australia."
Boxes will be placed in Clarke, Grant, Parkside and Robinsons for the month of November and will be available to receive donations whilst the hostesses are on duty. Health regulations demand that all donations are new. We are looking for the following - soap, deodorants, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, brushes and combs. Please note that shower caps, sewing kits and bath salts are not required. If you don't have hotel give-aways to donate, normal sized products are also very well received! Heather Charman, Unit 380 A sincere thank you to everyone who helped with our Fete/Open Day * Planning Committee * Making our craft, art, pottery, woodwork, plants * Setting up everything and clearing it all away again. * Cooking the BBQs and serving on stalls * Serving Devonshire Teas * Baking so many delicious cakes * Working in the sheds * Everything else. The sun shone upon us for a wonderfully successful Open Day and Fete. There were many sales enquiries and interest in our units. It was fantastic to see the stalls and activities so well attended and families out and about in the Village enjoying the good weather. Final figures will be displayed on notice boards and published in the Village Voice. If you would like to see some photos of the day please contact Cheryl Walshe so she can send you the link. It is lot of work to make the day happen so again- THANK YOU ALL Kim Jackson Executive Manager
The Village Baxter Bowls Club was proud to host
the final three rounds of the Victorian Mixed Pairs
Divisional Play-offs. The knock-out round of the
competition was held on Sunday 14 October when
bowlers from City of Frankston, Somerville,
Dromana, Rosebud Beach, Hastings and Karingal
competed for a place in the semi-finals the
following Sunday.
In the morning of Sunday 21 October the semi-finals were decided and combatants for the final
were Paul Twyerould (Rosebud Beach) and Sandra McColgan (Dromana) versus Anne Skipworth
and Colin Hartigan (City of Frankston). Anne and Colin were the victors and will now compete in
the Region finals later in the year.
Mornington Peninsula Bowls Inc. is the controlling body
of bowls on the Mornington Peninsula and surrounding
area and was there controlling the competition.
Resident of the Village Baxter, member, treasurer and
umpire of Village Baxter Bowls Club, Michael McCrae
was there in this capacity and also as treasurer of MPB
Inc. The board of MPB have congratulated us on the
excellence of the bowling facility, describing it as ‘the
best for access, viewing and playing the sport of lawn
bowls’.
The conditions which greeted players and spectators from all parts of the peninsula was the direct
result of the committee and members of the bowls club preparing the green and surrounds. The
hospitality demonstrated in the Green Room was very much appreciated by the players on the two
days of competition.

Sandy Fletcher did a presentation on the interesting free resource Trove, which is available online. The National Library of Australia has digitised newspapers from the 1800's through to the mid 1950's, covering all states and territories in Australia. Many fascinating details of our ancestors are recorded in newspapers, in addition to birth, death and marriage notices.
We also had a look at the New Zealand digitised newspapers "Papers Past", a similar resource to Trove. At next month's meeting on the 16 November 2018, Parkside at 2.00pm we will be looking at "Scotlands People", which is the official Scottish genealogy resource. Sandy Fletcher 10. Village Baxter is fortunate to have a number of magnificent established trees and large shrubs. If there is a particular specimen in the Village that you think other residents would enjoy looking at and reading about, please contact Shirley or Margaret with the details as we will be featuring a tree or shrub in the Village Voice every month.

Trees of the Month
Take a walk down the path leading to units 150 – 146, near entrance 4. You will pass several handsome trees and at unit 146 a very colourful garden bed. Opposite this bed are the two trees featured.
Paulownia sp.
A fast growing deciduous tree known by several names, including the princess tree. Grows to 15 – 20 metres high. Present in most of China and neighbouring countries. The leaves are large and heart shaped. In early spring the bare trees burst into spectacular flower. The ‘lavender tinted’ flowers cluster in large panicles, each flower resembling a floxglove flower. The timber has many uses, including boat building, surf boards, musical instruments and various crafts
Weeping Red Bottlebrush
Melaleuca viminalis Also known as Callistemon viminalis. Endemic to Queensland, NSW and WA. Flowers in spring and summer, producing a mass of bright red pendulous bottlebrushes. A large shrub or tree growing to 10 metres or more. A very popular
garden plant
We have always had a great group of men and women, who help with the Clarke Centre lock-up …..It is a job that requires them to spend a short time early evening perhaps twice a year. We desperately need some new helpers to join this dedicated group. The ‘job’ entails attending the centre on your duty week anytime between 5.30pm and 6.00pm, locking the doors and turning off the lights, ensuring heaters etc. are turned off, all of which probably takes about 10 minutes (and of course, there will be someone to run ‘newbies’ through the routine). PLEASE either ring me, leave your details with the Clarke Centre hostess or in my letter box within the next week or so, I need to draw up the roster for next year. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Margaret Duckett, Unit 368 tel. 5971 6905

We are so lucky to have such a wonderful
bus driver in Hovvey, he always has a
smile on his face and nothing is too much
trouble.
Recently we had a mix-up with a
shopping trolley being left behind. To
prevent future occurrences, when
residents have any items such as trolleys
and wheelie walkers that have to be
stored in the buses under body storage
compartment, can they please remain
with them until it has been stored on the
bus.
Thank you.
Being lonely One of my daughter’s favourite story books as a young child was The Lonely Only Mouse1. The main character is a mouse called Thelonius who enjoys life as the only young mouse in his family. However he does get lonely and he tries unsuccessfully to find a brother or sister in his neighbourhood. Then cousin Charlie, who comes from a very large family, visits for the night and Thelonius decides sharing is not easy. Is it better to be pampered and lonely or to have a companion? Recently in The Good Weekend there was an article called “Lone Rangers”. I was struck by this paragraph - “Rarely is loneliness discussed without the word ‘epidemic’. The panic reached a crescendo in January when British PM Theresa May created the world’s first minister for loneliness. The Conservative MP, Tracey Crouch is tasked with solving a problem which plagues more than 14% of Britons. Studies show loneliness is “more dangerous than smoking” and that we have fewer friends than ever before.” Mother Teresa has said: “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” As people we need others; it seems we are wired that way. Hence solitary confinement is considered the worst possible form of punishment because a person is totally isolated in their cell. In the Genesis narrative, God declares it is not good for a man to be alone and therefore he made Eve as a companion for Adam. (Genesis 2:18) Meeting new people and making friends is a challenge particularly for someone moving into the Village for the first time. How can we help? As I interact with different people, I am very encouraged to hear of residents reaching out to their neighbours, inviting them in for a cuppa or going on a mystery bus trip together, or introducing them to an interest group like the craft group. A smile, a friendly hello and introducing ourselves is also very meaningful and can be greatly appreciated by someone who is new. Listening attentively to their story is also a real gift. Let us do all we can to befriend others, to make them feel at home in our Village and to prevent people from feeling lonely and uncared for. Liz Taylor Chaplain

The Peninsula Toy Run is a motorcycle run that I attend each year and “Southern Peninsula Food For All” is where all the proceeds are donated too. This year ride is on Saturday 1st December at the Frankston Pier. The bikes assemble at 7.30am and depart at 9.30am for Rosebud. If you would like to donate any new toys or canned and packaged food they can be left with the hostess and at administration reception. Baron, Cheryl and Anita attend the toy run so they will take them on the day. All residents are invited and welcome to attend the toy run Thank you Baron.
