Rhyme Scheme

• Rhyme depends on sound not sight. It is not the words’ spelling that indicates rhyme; it is the words’ sound that counts.

• Examples

Through and although end in the same spelling pattern but do not rhyme

Teen and scene do not have the same spelling pattern but they both end in the same sound so they rhyme.

Rhyming words

• Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the ends, such as cat/hat or jumping/bumping

• When a poem has rhyming words at the end of lines, these are called “end rhymes” here is an example of an end rhyme:

My cat likes mice

Rhyme scheme

• A rhyme scheme is a way of describing the pattern of end rhyme in a poem. each new sound at the end of a line is given a letter, starting with “A,” then “B,” and so on. If an end sound at the end sound repeats the end sound of an earlier line, it gets the same letter as the earlier line.
