T is for TITLE•Analyze the title first. •What do you predict this poem or work will be about?•Write down your predictions.•We will reflect on the title again after we have read the poem.•The next step is often omitted, but it is the most important!

T is for TITLEPSALM 23 – “A Psalm of David”•What does psalm mean?

– In Greek it means “instrumental music” and in Hebrew it means “praises.”

– What do we know about David? How might that influence our understanding?

•What are your predictions?– David sings a song praising the Lord. – Why would he praise the Lord?

Tone is the attitude of the speaker toward the subject of the poem.

towards his or her subject. • Mood is how the poem makes a reader

feel.• Therefore, the tone in the Psalm would

be David’s attitude in the text. What is the tone of the Psalm?
