From 1994-1999

Denver Public Schools Distance Learning Network: Tele Deutsch: German via videoconferencing

How to motivate students? “Low to no” budget videos What was needed: camera & tri-pod

Page 3: Podcasting CDETG

Tele Deutsch: TV German

Not high on production values but:

Students respond to the CONTENT more than the production values

Students respond to humor Edited in camera by planning before

starting to record

Page 4: Podcasting CDETG

Disadvantages

Students see video only 1 time

No rewinding, pausing, reviewing

Student has no control of when, where, and how much to view the videos

Didn’t have sub-titles before…

2005: Video Hosting Arrives

YouTube, Blip.TV, Google Video, Revver, Veoh, etc. make it easy to upload and share videos

Free and simple Flash encoding and embedding

Higher quality, larger-sized Quicktime videos

Broadband allows for larger sizes

Content is King

Instructors can make short simple videos – screencasts or with digital cameras

Students are creating media for projects

Subtitles are easier to add

2006: Podcasting in the Classroom

Students download videos to iPods and other mobile devices

They review and pause when needed – they’re in control of their video learning objects

Highly engaging content to today’s visually oriented students

Video Podcasting

Videos are the one of the most popular aspects of my online course

Students consistently praise using humorous videos

Students are downloading to portable devices and taking learning with them

Still done on low to no budget!

Video Podcasting

How did it change my teaching life?

It enhanced my students’ learning experience with higher quality videos

It enabled me to more quickly and easily share videos

Easier accessibility due to auto-Flash encoding

Saves time

Next steps…

Have students create media projects and podcasts

Students compiling their own learning resources from YouTube, etc.

Mashups and remixes by students
