PREFACE

Pocket/abridged version of Agricultural Statistics at a Glance was introduced in 2013 as a quick reference guide for essential data frequently used by policy makers in the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and related agencies. This edition of the Pocket Book takes forward our healthy tradition of bringing quick and easy access to important facts.

The data for this pocket size book is derived mainly from this Directorate's annual publication of "Agricultural Statistics at a Glance", which is widely used as an authentic source of information. In addition, this year Pocket Book also includes projection on agricultural commodities by NCAER and other international organizations, and index of terms of trade between agriculture and non-agriculture sector based on revised methodology suggested by the Working Group established by the DAC&FW. Taking note of the new and emerging needs of policy makers we have also included state-wise information on the requirement and availability of certified seeds, insured area, agricultural credit and other agricultural inputs.

A.1 Explanatory Notes

Advance EstimatesThe estimates of area, production and yield rates for 2014-15 are “advance estimates” as on 17-08-2015 and are based on deliberations held in weekly inter-disciplinary meetings of Crop Weather Watch Group, availability of water in important reservoirs in the country, availability/supply of important inputs including credit to farmers community, feed back received from states etc. These estimates are “advance” in the sense that these have been prepared in advance of availability of results of CCE (Crop Cutting Experiments) and are subject to revision as more precise information flows from states to DES.

YieldYield rate is defined as production per unit of area. However, yield rates of various crops given in this publication may not exactly tally with the ratio of production to the corresponding area because figures of area and production of various crops have been generally rounded off in ten thousands.

Principal CropsPrincipal Crops as referred to in this publication include only those crops which are covered for preparation of index numbers.

Estimation Procedure for Non-Availability of Data for 2013-14The index numbers of area, production and yield rate for 2014-15 (from where growth rates have been derived) are based on advance estimates of principal crops as on 17-08-2015. However, there are a number of ‘non-forecast’ crops such as plantation crops and spices for which no advance estimates for 2014-15 (or for that matter any year) are prepared. In such cases, the estimates of area and production for the previous years are repeated for the purpose of index numbers.

1) Rainfall during 2014 (January- December, 2014)In 2014, the rainfall (January to December, 2014) over the country as a whole was 88% of Long Period Average (LPA). Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, 24 received excess/normal rainfall and 12 received deficient rainfall. Season wise rainfall distribution over the country as a whole was as follows:

Season–wise Performance Winter Season (January- February 2014)During the winter season rainfall activity over the country as a whole was 113% of the LPA rainfall. At met sub-division level, 16 subdivisions received excess rainfall, 05 sub-divisions received normal rainfall, 10 received deficient and 05 received scanty rainfall out of 36 met sub-divisions.

Pre-Monsoon Season (March- May 2014)Rainfall activity during the Pre-monsoon season over the country as a whole was recorded normal at 99% of LPA rainfall. Out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions, 15 received excess rainfall, 12 received normal rainfall, 07 received deficient rainfall and 02 met sub-divisions received scanty rainfall.

Monsoon Season 2014 (June-September 2014)During the monsoon season for the country as a whole, rainfall was 88% of its Long Period Average (LPA). Seasonal rainfall was 79% of LPA over Northwest India, 90% of its LPA over Central India, 93% of its LPA over south Peninsula and 88 % of its LPA over East and Northeast (NE) India. At met sub-division level, out of 36 met sub-divisions, one sub-division received excess rainfall, 23 sub-divisions received normal rainfall and 12 sub-divisions received deficient rainfall. Excess/normal rainfall sub-divisions covered 70% of the geographical area of the country. Out of 615 districts for which rainfall data were available, 56 districts (9%) received excess rainfall, 279 districts (46%) normal rainfall, 223 districts (36%) deficient rainfall and 56 districts (9%) received scanty rainfall.

Post-Monsoon Season (October- December 2014)Rainfall activity during the Post-monsoon season over the country as a whole was recorded deficit rainfall with 67% of LPA. Out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions, 2 received excess rainfall, 10 received normal rainfall, 13 received deficient rainfall and 11 met sub-divisions received scanty rainfall.

2) Rainfall during 2015 (January-December, 2015)During the winter season rainfall activity over the country as a whole was 91% of the LPA rainfall. At met sub-division level, 09 subdivisions received excess rainfall, 09 subdivisions received normal rainfall, 12 received deficient and 06 received scanty rainfall out of 36 met sub-divisions.

Monsoon Season 2015 (June-September 2015)During the monsoon season for the country as a whole, rainfall was 86% of its Long Period Average (LPA). Seasonal rainfall was 83% of LPA over Northwest India, 84% of its LPA over Central India, 85% of its LPA over South Peninsula and 92 % of its LPA over East and Northeast (NE) India. At met sub-division level, out of 36 met sub-divisions, one sub-division received excess rainfall, 18 sub-divisions received normal rainfall and 17 sub-divisions received deficient rainfall. Excess/normal rainfall sub-divisions covered 70% of the geographical area of the country. Out of 614 districts for which rainfall data were available, 62 districts (10%) received excess rainfall, 250 districts (41%) normal rainfall, 272 districts (44%) deficient rainfall and 30 districts (5%) received scanty rainfall.

Post-Monsoon Season (October-December 2015)During the post-monsoon season rainfall (1st October to 18th November, 2015) country received 72% of LPA. Out of 36 meteorological subdivisions, 03 received excess rainfall, 05 received normal rainfall, 10 received deficient rainfall and 18 received scanty rainfall.
