Keynote Speaker: Paolo del Vecchio, M.S.W., is the Director for the Center for Mental Health Services at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA is the lead Federal agency designed to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.

As the first Consumer Affairs Specialist hired by SAMHSA, he promoted consumer participation in all aspects of the Center’s policies and operations ranging from public education to developing evidence based practices to address the needs of persons with mental illnesses. Those efforts included initiating historic dialogue meetings between consumers/peers and practitioners, regional peer meetings, social inclusion efforts, training programs, and grant development.

The workshop will be on Medication Management Harm Reduction in the African American Community. The Members of the POCC’s African American Empowerment Committee and a local pharmacist Michael Ponder will provide an overview on side effects of medications used by those affected by mental health and substance use condition. Mr.

Ponder will educate participants about meds. Q & A will allow the audience to ask questions and talk about solutions to misdiagnosis.

“Being Good Enough: Recovery through the Peace Corp”

Sheldon will provide a narrative of how his two years tour of duty in the Peace Corp helped him feel good enough to find out that he had something to offer. The workshop is meant to be sharing of his experiences so that others can

benefit by thinking outside the box and finding opportunities within and without the mental health system.

grassroots militant action to providing funded mental health services, and explain the major progressive effect and changes that the consumer/survivor movement has made in the mental health system.

Panel: Through youth and young adult approaches, the POCC

TAY and Youth In Mind team will deliver a keynote plenary, speaking to the power of leadership through vulnerability

and storytelling. We are fierce, we are strong; we are resil-ient. We echo these messages as a diverse team of individ-uals with lived-systems experience of mental health, child

welfare, juvenile justice, and homelessness. Many of us are violence and trauma survivors, and we want to engage in an interactive panel to speak our truth and provide recommen-

dations from emerging leaders transforming systems.

Workshop: Through youth-driven, interactive approaches, join the

POCC TAY and Youth In Mind team to engage in a work-shop on resiliency. We go beyond the biomedical model, and build community mental health. Our team cultivates

cultures of wellness safety and healing. This workshop will be interactive and art-based, where we uplift our stories and build skills on how to mitigate community harm from many approaches. Participants will walk away with re-sources and a new sense of shared connection for the

work we all are doing to heal our communities.

gains made in the consumer/survivor movement. It will give examples of individual and collective advocacy. It

will also share tips for effective advocacy from almost 40 years of observation.

African American Men Telling Their Mental Health Stories. Black Men speak is a known organization statewide and around the country. Joe Anderson will be the master of ceremonies and will do a presentation about his life challenges;

Ernest Hardmon will present on the legacy of slavery with a twist, mentioning PTSS and the new Jim Crow ; Roscoe Moseby will be speaking about the road to recovery; John Black will talk about the History of Black Men Speak and how we came about and where we are at now; Tommy Bell will share his journey to recovery, Kenneth Davis will be telling

his story about family and his walk through recovery, ending with a song.

As family members/caregivers, it’s no secret that we often neglect our own self-care. In this workshop you will explore brewing some bliss for relaxation and how to hit the reset button to re-energize throughout the day.

In this interactive workshop participants will have an opportunity to engage their sensory system to promote overall wellness. They will discover how various teas can assist in relaxation and promote a healthy balance. We will discuss

the effects of stress on the body and how self-care is vital to encouraging holistic well-being.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) is an Evidenced Based Practice in which individuals develop action plans to deal with distressing and troubling feelings or behaviors, using personal insight and self-determination. During

this presentation, participants will gain valuable information about WRAP, the value of peer support, and use art as a medium for creating an action plan.

“DBT” An Overview; How to use these coping skills in everyday living

This workshop is a cognitive behavioral treatment that was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and it is now recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for this population but we now know that Dialectical Behavioral Therapy can be used by anyone. In this workshop you will learn about the 4 modules of DBT and practice how one would use the skills in everyday life.

BIOGRAPHIESAAEC: The Pool of Consumer Champions’ African American Empowerment Committee is composed of the following members: Kenneth Davis, Paulette Franklin, Joe Anderson, Melody Parker, Gordon Reed, Pamela Jordan, Horatio Finley, Bre Williams, and Matthew Council. We are committed to promoting, educating, and informing the African American community on wellness and recovery.

Kenneth “Kozi” Arrington: I began to experience mild to moderate signs/symptoms of mental illness in elementary school. I was confused about gender, ethnicity and spirtuality. I heard, knew and saw things that cast me into false worlds of fantasy, illusion and altered reality. Music became my everything, my redeeming grace and so it is today.

Black Men Speak: Ernest Harmon, Joe Anderson, John Black, Kenneth DavisOur mission is to inform and enlighten the mental health community and the general public about issues concerning African American males with mental health and substance abuse challenges through a speaker’s bureau.

Edward Branco: A peer provider for the Tenant Support Program, a program of the Alameda County Network of Mental Health Clients. He is a Pool of Consumer Champions member and active in housing rights and the mental health consumer movement

Jo Bruno: Born and raised in the Bay Area, Jo Bruno is the first generation to graduate in her family. Attending college, she studied journalism, graphic design, writing, and anthropology. She’s a self-published author of The Wench’s Cocktail, and she is passionate about social justice, women in the sex industry, and a strong advocate for prison reform. She is currently working as a Social Media Strategist for California Association of Peer Run Organizations (CAMHPRO), studying massage therapy and the Outreach Coordinator for the POCC TAY Committee.

Steven Bucholtz: A 15 year veteran in the field of wellness, recovery, resiliency and peer support, Steven has worked in a variety of positions including: BestNow! Program Coordinator, Vocational Services Specialist, BHCS Wellness Recovery Resiliency Hub Consultant, PATH Wellness Educator and, at present, Community Connections Program Coordinator at Eden Adult Community Support Center.

David Chiang: I have a long term battle with mental health challenge, and I survived because of strong faith on Lord Jesus and Humanity. I am graduated from CAL State East Bay on Biology major, and I am a P.O.C.C. member since 2007. Right now I am working for NAMI, and I am looking for social service job as my future career. Thanks God, He doesn’t abandon me!

BIOGRAPHIESShawn Davis: He became familiar with the importance of social services at an early age. His experience with overcoming severe personal traumas led him to become the dedicated advocate he is today. His passion for advocacy is the result of lived experiences: most significantly the loss of his parents and his placement in the Child Welfare and mental health care systems. Recognizing the imbalances in these systems, Shawn developed the resolve to become active in improving these structures and implementing programs to better serve the youth in need of them. In his role at Youth in Mind as the Programs and Outreach Coordinator, Shawn channels his passion for community development through his work in systems-transformation and recovery-oriented change. He passionately maintains the goals of eliminating stigmas surrounding mental health care and treatment through education and collaboration with peer initiatives. Through his work, Shawn hopes to expand his mission of assisting youth impacted by mental health care systems through education, empowerment, and developmental leadership.

Mary Dell: Mary, a founder of the Eden Community Connections Program and a graduate of BestNow! serves as a steering committee member of the Community Connections Core Leadership. She is a small group leader and facilitator of SHARE (Supporting Hope Advancing Recovery for Everyone). She is an indispensable member of our team.

Cheryl Diston: Registered and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, I am a recent graduate of Berkeley City College (May 26th 2016) and have seven years documented lived experience. I also am a proud member of two organizations. (1) POCC (2) Essie JUSTICE. Through me challenging the stigma and embracing my mental wellness through allowing to recognizing and being grateful for God’s grace.

Lala Doost: Started her journey in mental health in 2008 at an Oakland based nonprofit organization where she had an opportunity to learn about the realistic and infinite possibilities for wellness and recovery. After 2008, Lala joined the Pool of Consumer Champions. With the POCC Lala connected with various mental health related agencies within Alameda County, including HHREC where she is now the Program Manager for The 10x10 Wellness Campaign.

Tim Dreby: Currently collaborates with PEERS to help train, teach and revise the Special Message paradigm that he and supporters at Highland Hospital (where he currently works) co-created. Tim has a memoir published with Hidden Thoughts Press entitled, Fighting for Freedom in America which documents a two-year period (mid-career) when he was in Special Messages Crisis.

Lyndsey Elis: I am a program support coordinator at PEERS. A Bay Area resident for over 10 years, I engaged in several outreach opportunities for nonprofits. My background in creative writing has helped me overcome childhood trauma that stemmed from witnessing domestic violence and it has empowered me to facilitate writing workshops for under-represented youth and domestic violence survivors.

Darryl Fortenberry: I have been free of drugs and alcohol for 29 years. I have spoken in almost all of the states, discussing the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol, also offering a solution to this problem that affects almost every citizen of this country, one way or the other. I have had mental health in my family and have been involved in the criminal justice system, along with having to deal with my own mental illness.

Bettye Foster: I have over 20 years of lived experience as a family member to someone with a mental health challenge. I am dedicated to helping family members find tools that will help them cope while working with their loved one on their journey to wellness and recovery. I am the Lead Family Advocate at FERC. I am a NAMI trained facilitator for family/caregiver support groups and the Family-to-Family course. I also facilitate Provider Education workshops and the Public Education Campaign for Future Mental Health Providers.

Regina Gage: 40 year survivor of Incest B.A. Liberal Arts-AA Gen. Ed, Ethnic studies at merrit college and Grambling State University. Poet and writer resident of Oakland California

Kevin Gaines Jr.: 23-year-old consumer who has experienced criminal justice and behavioral healthcare systems. Kevin recently graduated BestNow! class of 2016, and is now a certified mental health specialist who is returning to his community through voice, idea and collaboration. Since January, 2016, Kevin has interned with Youth in Mind supporting the development of workshops, conferences and spaces where youth with lived experience can grow, and engage in the change process from our own experiences, and is the co-chair of the POCC TAY Committee.

BIOGRAPHIESChamp Green: My name is Autoria Johnson; I am a 37-year-old African American from east Oakland. I work for POCC TAY and Trauma Transformed. I am also an advocate of Youth in Mind. I have faced many hardships in life, and am thankful to my mom for introducing me to God at a young age which was pivotal in my growth process of getting the help I needed. Having that foundation in God made it easier for me to transition to coping with mental health issues. Through these trials and tribulations, it gave me an appreciation to saturate myself in the mental health field to empower and uplift others regardless of what background we come from.

Glen Hong: I grew up in the Bay Area in Alameda CA. I am currently an intern with Youth in Mind, the POCC TAY Committee Recorder, and a Peer Specialist with the BestNow Program. I became interested in this field by experiencing my own mental health challenges after being diagnosed, and have vastly improved over the last few years. I hold a Bachelors in Psychology from UC Berkeley. I am a recent graduate of BestNow! and have received my peer specialist certification. I am 31 years old and come from a Korean-American background. I plan on applying for MSW programs and continuing to work with Youth in Mind.

Michele Moncrief: I was introduced to the Jobs Now pilot program, which is now called Best Now. This training taught me that through my lived experience’s that I could help others. After completion I was hired as an Alameda County employer in 1998. I attended Merritt College & many trainings that the county had to offer. I worked at Oakland Community Support Center as Mental Health Specialist in the day program as well as a case manager & briefly assisting Dr. Johnson of CHOICES. Today I am with the Consumer Empowerment Department under the supervision of Khatera Aslami & manager Mary Hogden two awesome women who I continue to learn from. I staff the Consumer Employment Advisory Taskforce & Healing Trauma.

Gilbert Pizano: is a WRAP facilitator and has a background in youth advocacy, facilitating trainings and focus groups, as well as lived experience as a Transition Age Youth (TAY). Gilbert’s experiences have motivated him to further his career path within this field of work and to make changes every step of the way.

Michael Ponder, PharmD: has doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy at the UCSF, school of Pharmacy. Michael Ponder is the Assistant Manager at the Apothecary Pharmacy Eastmont Town Center, Oakland, CA. The Apothecary, a division of the Ramsell Corporation, have served the community over the past 60 years. Our mission statement is to serve the underserved. In this theme, we have dedicated our services to East Oakland community and the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services over the last decade.

Andrée Reyes, MSW: For 27 years, Andrée Reyes has lived with a mental health diagnosis. She has persisted. She was the Associate Director of PEERS in 2004 -2007, Assistant Director of BHCS’ Wellness, Recovery & Resiliency Hub 2007-2010, and has most recently joined the BHCS Consumer Empowerment Team.

Cornell Slaton: is a peer provider for the Tenant Support Program, a program of the Alameda County Network of Mental Health Clients. He is a Pool of Consumer Champions member and active in housing rights and the mental health consumer movement.

Michelle Vieira: Michelle, an award-winning founder of the POCC is a BHCS peer support specialist pioneer having been one of the 1st hired as a County Employee. She has worked at Eden Adult Community Support Center for 15 years and is highly respected. She is co-coordinator of the Community Connections Program at Eden.

Bre Williams: is an Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator, consumer, advocate for mental health stigma elimination, and student of life. She knows that life challenges happen to any and every one; and fully believes that with hope, determination, and support, everyone can recover and live the life they desire!

Marti Winterhalter: Over 30 years of professional experience as a certified Recreation Therapist, Supervisor and change agent in a variety of health care organizations. Currently the Director of Rehabilitation at a Villa Fairmont. I hold an MBA in Healthcare Management.

For over six years, I’ve enjoyed a rich collaborative relationship with Alameda County Behavioral Health Care services.This collaboration with ACBHC, and many other consumer run agencies has contributed greatly to my own wellness, and has allowed me create a healing environment at Villa and to create a bridge for folks while still in-hospital to be integrate back into the community.

Michele Wms-Smith: A Family Advocate with the Family Education and Resource Center (FERC) who provides advocacy and support services for families who have loved ones with mental health challenges. As a Family Advocate, she serves Alameda County; her satellite office is located at the Fremont Resource Center. She is the Lead for the FERC’s Transition Age Youth - Family Member (TAY-FM) group - which focuses on peer support for family member youth between the ages of 16-24 years.
