volunteers that have contributed to classroom activities, Clubs and special events, on
behalf of all staff we pass on a huge thank you!
CLUBS A hugely successful afternoon for all children on Tuesday when our first ‘Clubs’ Program occurred
for the year. Great attitudes by shown by students and a huge range of activities ensured a fan-
tastic afternoon was had by all. Thank you to all parents and carers that contributed to the
activities, with a special thank you to Mrs. Hinton for her wonderful organisation.
RIDE2SCHOOL - FRIDAY MARCH 23rd A great response to ‘Ride2School’ Day held last Friday and remember important road rules when
travelling to and from school. It is also essential to have a helmet on when riding and scooting.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS A review of the Attendance Guidelines for schools was undertaken in Term 4, 2017 by the
Department of Education. The review and resulting changes to the Guidelines will help
ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours and ensure that schools are
supported in their duty of care obligations.
The new requirement for schools under the Guidelines is for the school to contact
parents/guardians as soon as practicable on the day of a student’s absence. This was
formerly three days.
Please support these changes by having prompt communication on the morning of the
absence, if we have not received a call or you have not completed an online absent form the
class teacher, Kerryn (Wellbeing Officer), Nicole or myself need to communicate with you.
To eliminate the need to contact you on the day of the absence you can take one of
the following actions:
Let us know in advance if you know your child is going to be away. You can call the office
or let your child’s classroom teacher know. A verbal message from your child is not
appropriate.
Use the Skoolbag App ‘Absent Note’ link and forward to the school ASAP OR you can go
to the school webpage and use the ‘Report an Absent’ link found on the front page.
Call the school first thing in the morning to let us know your child is away and the reason.
IT’S FINE TO BE ON TIME On behalf of all staff have a safe and relaxing Easter break!

Bio lab excursion Last Friday grade 4/5W and 6M when to the Bio Lab in Geelong. First we got there and 4/5 went to the lab. We tested urine and checked if the potato head peo-ple cheated used drugs. Like steroids. There was different stations called Masking Station, Blood Sta-tion and Protein Station. My group worked at the protein station first we had to check if they had the normal amount of protein or an abnormal amount. At the Masking Station we did a ph dip and we checked if salt was in the urine. Mine and Ma-son’s potato head failed the masking station so he cheated. In the race that means he either put salt or vinegar but the only way for the doctor not to see you do it is if you pay money to him. At the blood station we checked the athletes blood viscosity if it stayed together that means they cheated and if it spreads apart they didn’t cheat. We had to add something with the blood. After we did every testing station we switched over to the auditorium. First in the auditorium we saw parts of our brain and long and short term memory. Josephine got asked about what she had for dinner last night and she answered then Shannon asked her what she had for dinner 25 days ago, she answered the exact same as she had last night. Then Renee asked us question about cards but before that she gave us I- clickers it is like a remote but it answers question on the big screen by clicking A, B or C. The questions were about what shape was number 4 or colour, something like that. In the Hot Zone we did balance tests with a partner and we stood a balance board with two feet and we tried to stay on it for 30 seconds, and then one foot on the board and tried to do 30 seconds and for the last balance we had to do two feet on the board with eyes closed. After the balances on the board Shannon and Renee split everyone up into 4 groups there was the green group, red group, blue group and the white group. We got in a line sitting down and we put our foot down on the foot pad, and we turned off the green light that was on and when the green light and the buzzer went on we had to take our foot off as fast as possible. By Aaron My favourite thing about this excursion was meeting new people, getting fit and testing peo-
ple if they cheated or not.
Bio lab On Friday we went to Bio lab in Geelong. We left at 7 o’clock, it took 2 and a half hours and I nearly got sick, but I was fine. When we got there we had a snack break. Then we got stuck into it. First we put on our lab coats and went into the lab. We watched a video about potatoes in a race and then we tested them for steroids. I tested BL3. There were three stations the protein station, blood station and masking station. At about 1.30 we had lunch, after that we went into the theatre and learnt about the brain. I learnt that the brain has 1000, 000, 000, 00 cells, I think that’s amazing. Then we went to the hot zone. First we did a balance test. I won the challenge with the maxi-mum time of 1min and 2 secs and I won a drink-bottle. Then we did a reaction test to see if we could be as fast as Sally Pearson. The funny thing is nobody got as fast. Then it was time to go home. I loved my day and I really want to go back. BY GUS

A trip to Biolab On Friday 4/5W and 6M went to Biolab in Geelong. First we went into the Auditorium and a guy called Cam talked about what the brain controls and what the left and right does, then we went into the hot zone we sat down on the floor and paired up with someone else. The tests were about reflexes and the second part was about how exercise can help your brain. We played a dot game on an iPad, then we did some exercise and we were much better. After we had our lunch break 6M went to the lab and we talked about Mr Potato heads racing and who ever can come 1st, 2nd 3rd had to have a steroid test we talked about masking, protein and blood and we did all these tests. My favourite part was the lab and I really liked the testing, I had a great day. By Ruby

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 4 GOOD HABITS START EARLY Major health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers , are often related to poor eating habits. It’s much easier to teach children god habits from the beginning - and it’s easier to break bad habits earlier in life. Good habits include: eating nutritious snacks rather than junk snacks; sitting at the table for meals; being active for at least part of the day; tidying up after yourself; ad flossing and brushing your teeth morning and night. These are great habits for good health whatever your age.
What you can do NOW Decide on what will be god habits for your family. Practise the good habits yourself. Let your child know this is what it takes to be healthy.
Good Idea!
Reinforce your child’s changes of habits, however small, with comments such as: ‘You’re a smart eat-er choosing al those veggies to eat up’ and ‘I’ve noticed that you’re much more active these days. That’s great’.
Top Tip
Breaking habits takes time. Be patient and consistent in your expectations of your kids and yourself.

California Gully Ride2School Day – March 23
rd, 2018
It is great to see so many children walking and riding to school today. More than half
of our students were active travellers today. It would be great if we could encourage
more of our students to walk or ride to school each day. Remember that you can walk
part way to school as well if you live too far from school to walk the whole way.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
