Dear Parents and Carers, Another great week at California Gully Primary School! Each week I am getting to know more and more students and meet families. I am constantly impressed

by the passion for learning, caring and strong sense of community that I see from all areas of our

school. There is certainly a great deal to be proud of here.

Tomorrow, we have our second rehearsal for the Community Carols concert. We are so fortunate to

have Simone Richards helping us out with that as she has a great musical background and is a

registered teacher too. Students have been having a wonderful time at rehearsals and are really en-

joying themselves. All students are welcome to come along. Rehearsals take place every Thursday at

2:00pm (new time this week – there will be an announcement over the P.A) in the conference room.

Students will need to bring back a note giving them permission to be involved and agreeing that they

will be available to attend the concert on the night (December 10th). It will be wonderful to see our

students up there, representing our school with pride.

MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and

well informed and productive community members who are well prepared to become

active, engaged and responsible citizens of the local and global community.

Friday night this week is the Prep – 2 Sleepover and there are a lot of very excited students about that! Students in Grade Prep and 1 also have an excursion to the Fairy Park coming up on Friday the 17th November. I will be out of the school today at a Principal’s Meeting at Regional Office but I’ll look forward to

seeing everyone on Friday morning at Assembly.

With warm regards,

Michelle Griffiths

2018 PREP ENROLMENTS We are encouraging families who are yet to begin the enrolment process to do so in the

near future. Please contact the office to arrange for the collection of enrolment forms or

for further information.

Tinkering Table The grade preps would like an old Tape/CD player for the ‘Tinkering Table’. The children will disman-tle and explore the inner workings during Investigation Time. There is no need for it to be in working order. If you have one or any other items suitable for such investigations, please see Annette or Kathryn.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 40 KIDS NEED RULES WHEN THEY’RE HOME ALONE Most kids will spend some time alone at home, either because parents are at work outside the home or because they have other things to attend to. It’s important to make clear to your kids what you expect of them when they are home without you. Having some basic rules gives them boundaries, and even if they don’t do what you expect of them, they know they’re stepping outside of those boundaries.

What you can do NOW If you want your kids to eat healthy food even when you

aren’t around, stock up on it and don’t buy foods with low nutritional value.

Tell the kids that while you aren’t there to watch every move, you know they will be honest e.g. about limited TV watching.

Good Idea!

Expect your kids to carry out simple tasks at home when you aren’t there. For example, they could bring in the washing and fld it, or start washing vegetables for dinner. Kids can be responsible when they feel they are part of a team.

Top Tip

It’s always better to set limits even if kids occasionally overstep them than to have no limits at all—and it’s a good idea to let them know you ex-pect the very best from them.

WAYS TO INCLUDE CALCIUM IN YOUR CHILD’S DIET

Calcium is

essential for

your child’s

health as it a

major building block strong

bones and teeth. The best

sources of calcium include

milk, yoghurt and cheese

(choose low fat varieties). At

least 2-3 serves each day are

recommended. Keeping

active is also import for bone

strength. Non-dairy sources of calcium

include:

Calcium-fortified soy

products.

Salmon with bones.

Almonds

Nori sheets

1. Cereal (containing little added sugar - less than

5g of sugar per serve), is a great breakfast

food or for quick snacks. Serve with hot or cold

milk for variety!

2. Encourage a glass of milk with dinner.

3. Freeze low fat milk based drinks for school

lunches. A great way to keep the lunchbox cool

on warmer days!

4. Make smoothies with low fat yoghurt, milk, fruit and ice.

5. Freeze low fat yoghurts for lunchboxes or dessert.

6. Cut low fat cheese slices into different shapes

for a varied lunchbox snack.

7. Plain low fat ice-cream and custard are a

yummy and popular dessert choice and can be

enjoyed regularly.

8. Dollop low fat yoghurt and/or cheese on

baked potatoes or for soups. Soups can also

be made using low fat milk.

9. Be a good role model! Kids make many

food choices by watching their parents.

California Gully Hands Up Data – November 7, 2017

It was good to see children walking and riding to school today. Over one quarter of our

children walked or rode to school today, continuing our good work from ‘Walk to

School’ month. With the improved weather it would be wonderful to see if we can con-

tinue our active travel habits.
